I first caught HBO Max series DMZ back in April and meant to write about it then, but finally managed to revisit it over the weekend. I have to admit though, that the show is only as long as one hour for all four episodes is one of its more inviting aspects. I never read the DC Vertigo comic, and so I don’t know if that is due to duration or simply Robert Patino’s own liberties in creating the series. Nevertheless, the show is certainly solid in its format. Rosario Dawson leads the cast opposite Benjamin Bratt, and along with Hoon Lee, Freddie Miares and Jordan Preston with episodes directed by Ava DuVernay and Ernest Dickerson – neither of whom are strangers to television – and penned by Patino along with Westworld and Mad Men vet Carly Wray, and by the comic’s original authors Brian Wood and Riccardo Burchielli for […]
Dominic Patten and Mike Fleming Jr. are reporting from Deadline as of Thursday that Ava DuVernay is onto directing yet another big scale event film following her milestone effort with A Wrinkle In Time. Thus, following Selma helmer’s own interest in superheroes via Twitter last year, comic book adaptation, The New Gods, will be the project forthcoming from the pages of DC under Warner Bros. Pictures, as inspired by Jack Kirby’s 1971 creation of the same name. The New Gods was the Genesis of the uber-villain Darkseid. Also called “Fourth World,” the Kirby creation debuted in a trilogy of related comics written and drawn by Kirby that were published in the very early 1970s: New Gods, Forever People and Mister Miracle. The New Gods came into existence after the world of the gods of classic mythology were destroyed during Ragnarok. The deities inhabit two planets: one is New Genesis, a […]
Ava DuVernay’s forthcoming novel adaptation, A Wrinkle In Time, is opening next year in March from Walt Disney Pictures. I didn’t pay any mind to this at first but this looks actually like a pleasant thrillride for the family adventure crowd and I’m pretty happy to see this director sticking around. The film is based on Madeleine L’Engle’s classic book which sees a young girl who sets out to rescue her father. The story reportedly stretches across dimensions of time and space and dimensions of darkness and light and ultimately…well, other things beyond my instinctive understanding since I haven’t read the book myself but all I know is that this one deserves some support when it hits theaters. DuVernay directs from a screenplay by Jennifer Lee and stars Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon, Mindy Kaling, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Michael Peňa, Levi Miller, Deric McCabe, André Holland, Rowan Blanchard with Zach Galifianakis and […]
