Li Weiran’s THE YIN YANG MASTER Acquired By Netflix

Not to be confused with Guo Jingming’s latest currently on Netflix, next on deck with director Li Weiran will be The Yin Yang Master, having also landed home at Netflix with global exclusive rights (sans China) per the streamer’s announcement on Tuesday. The Yin Yang Master takes its cues from the popular mobile game, Onmyōji, reuniting Painted Skin: The Resurrection actors Chen Kun and Zhou Xun, as well as the two with producers of said film, Chen Kuo-fu and Chang Chia-lu. Additionally, the film will see the respective roles of Kun and Xun as the titular master himself, Qingming, and Bai Ni, as love interests, along with actor William Chan as Ci Mu, a sophisticated character that transforms from good to evil. Trailer: Li Weiran’s THE YIN YANG MASTER Mitigates Conflict Between Two Worlds

Between two films that bare the same title, director Li Weiran’s incarnation of The Yin Yang Master takes its cues from the popular mobile game. The new dark fantasy epic stars Chen Kun, Zhou Xun, William Chan and Wang Likun, and tells of an “Onmyoji” – a magic specialist – whose human hybrid identity may be the key when confronted by a Demon Emperor following a contract officiated with a group of monsters. Mandarin Drama Epic, THE RISE OF PHOENIXES, Premieres On September 14

Netflix Asia unveiled a gorgeous new trailer on Thursday for Mandarin drama series, The Rise Of Phoenixes. Upcoming The Weary Poet actor Chen Kun and actress Ni Ni headline the new show, clocked in at 70 episodes all loosely based on Huang Quan, a novel by Tianxia Guiyuan. This is a story of power, desire, lust and love amongst people from different kingdoms in ancient China, all with the desire of rising to become The Great Phoenix. Ning Yi (played by Chen Kun), is the sixth prince of kingdom who hides a dark past. Wuershan’s MOJIN: THE LOST LEGEND Comes Home On May 3

Director Wuershan dazzled at the box office back in 2015 with the 80’s set action adventure comedy, Mojin: The Lost Legend. Based on a 2006 novel by Zhang Muye, the subject of searching for lost national treasures may have played a role in garnering the attention it did in China as well as the success drawn from its IMAX releases. At any rate, it became a box office success ultimately debuting second to J.J. Abrams’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens. I choose to believe that better days are ahead for CG in Asian cinema. For now, what we get is a mixed-bag in at least one particular entry into fantasy wuxia with Zhao Tianyu’s latest, Zhong Kui: Snow Girl & The Dark Crystal, yet another foray into Chinese folklore that boldly goes all-in on visual spectacle to encompass its epic scope. It’s a noteworthy effort but it’s not without its stumbles. China is definitely working it’s way up in the delivering VFX-heavy storytelling department with several projects as of late, with one of them being director Zhao Tianyu‘s Mandarin-language fantasy epic, Zhong Kui: Snow Girl And The Dark Crystal. Actor Chen Kun leads the cast with leading lady Li Bingbing in a story filled with its fair share of demons, monsters, magic and mystics, coupled with romance, danger and spectactacular action. The film is getting its theatrical release in China on February 19, although I can certainly see the need for big screen treatment overseas. Some needed improvements in its CGI enhancements aside though, the film looks very stunning so far and I hope to see this myself when it gets across the pond in due time. Village, WB Board As Investors For 3D Action Fantasy, ZHONG KUI!

Back in February at the height of the popularity of 3D technology earned from this year’s release of Cheng Pou-Soi’s Winter blockbuster, The Monkey King, that filmimg was reported to begin for the latest action adventure from director Zhao Tianyu titled, Zhong Kui: Snow Girl and the Dark Crystal. On Sunday in Shanghai, it was officially reported that Village Roadshow Pictures Asia and Warner Bros. Pictures have signed on as co-financiers for the film.
