POKEMON: DETECTIVE PIKACHU Sequel Bolts Ahead with Jonathan Krisel Directing

The shockingly successful Detective Pikachu, a live action / CG crossover featuring the fantastic Justice Smith and the legendary Ryan Reynolds (who at this point seems to be doing the side quests), is steadily chugging forward with sequel talks, much to this writer’s pleasure. The latest from Deadline says talks have begun with Jonathan Krisel, co-creator of Portlandia to direct the sequel, which seems like a good fit based on the tone of the first film. The original film released in 2019 did more than $430 million at the box office, and was directed by Rob Letterman. It features lead Smith (no relation to any Holywood royalty, though Justice himself is certifiably Fresh in my opinion) as protagonist Tim Goodman, a young man who once dreamed of becoming a Pokemon Trainer. Photos: Maarten de Boer Do enough searching online and you’re likely to spot some set pictorals from the London shoot of Rob Letterman’s Detective Pikachu from Legendary Pictures and Universal Pictures. Further stills await more casting news coming and production officially underway as of last week based on the latest game which hits North American shores this Spring on Nintendo 3DS. Those updates continue as of Thursday with actors Golden Globe® winning actor Bill Nighy and British actor Chris Geere set to star as a father and son duo in the new film next to Ryan Reynolds, Ken Watanabe, Justice Smith and Kathryn Newton. YouTube Heaven knows what a third season of Netflix series The Get Down might have welcomed. It’s great to have at least had two though, and introducing actor Justice Smith to today’s viewing demographic, which makes it all the more opportune with his attachment last year to Pokémon’s Detective Pikachu from Legendary Pictures and Universal Pictures. A line-up attaching him with actors Ryan Reynolds (Deadpool), Watanabe Ken (Godzilla) and actress Kathryn Newton (Three Billboards) also serves well and with principal photography now underway to showcase a debut live-action approach to a longstanding and popular Japanese property. It was a little over a week ago that Legendary Pictures stirred talk over a possible live-action feature film based on the fan favorite Pokèmon game and media franchise which launched in 1995. The hit mobile app, Pokèmon GO launched within a span of 2 weeks this month worldwide and propelled Nintendo’s 25% stock value by about $9 billion dollars, and not without its fair share of varying matters of controversy from its intrusiveness by players on various private and public properties as they journeyed to collect the iconic virtual monsters, to several reports of accidents, and even the angering, teething glitches it would befall from time to time.
