Warner Bros. Jacks Into THE MATRIX Franchise For A Fifth Film

A new entry into The Matrix franchise is in development. As the trades reported on Wednesday, a fifth installment is in the works from writer/director Drew Goddard (Bad Times At The El Royale). He is also producing the film next to Sarah Esberg under their Goddard Textiles banner, with Lana Wachowski exec producing. The pentalogical installment is being billed as “simply set in the “Matrix” universe, not a direct sequel” per reporting by The Wrap’s Drew Taylor. Casting details and further story info remain under wraps. News comes just as the inaugural groundbreaking martial arts-imbued sci-fi actioner directed by Lana and Lilly Wachowski celebrated its 25th anniversary. X-FORCE Lands Drew Goddard In The Director’s Chair

The path to an X-Force movie has been a long one, but now it looks as if its development has finally hit a new milestone with the attachment of Drew Goddard (Daredevil, The Defenders) to write and direct for the 20th Century Fox Marvel adaptation. Other names like Jeff Wadlow and Joe Carnahan have circled the project in the months following the blockbuster release of Tim Miller’s Ryan Reynolds headliner, Deadpool, with the latter ultimately dropping the project among others. Goddard, currently helming Bad Times At The El Royale for Fox, will be joined by Reynolds and actor Josh Brolin in manifesting the popular comic book property which began under Marvel in 1991 from creator Rob Liefeld about a team of mutant warriors more down and dirty than the X-Men. Craig Zahler is also a credited author of books; More relevantly, his 2013 publication, Wraiths Of The Broken Land and its 2010 predecessor, “A Congregation Of Jackals”, serve as noteworthy examples of his own inspiration preceding his 2015 horror Western, Bone Tomahawk. Such a vision has since landed Zahler in good favor with The Martian duo, writer Drew Goddard and director Ridley Scott who are reportedly reuniting once more for an adaptation of the aforementioned 2013 novel according to Deadline. 20th Century Fox has acquired the screen rights to the film which, inspired by the book, is set near the Mexican border where a group of men assemble for a perilous and tumultuous journey across the badlands to rescue their captive sisters from prostitution.
