It’s been close to fifteen years since efforts began to try and revamp John Carpenter’s 1981 classic, Escape From New York. Rights have been changing hands with different directors and stars circling the film and now the latest movement sees Matt Bettinelli-Olpin, Tyler Gillett and Chad Villella – a.k.a. Radio Silence (Ready Or Not, Scream 2022) on board to direct the film for 20th Century Studios. The trio will produce the pic alongside The Picture Company’s own Andrew Rona and Alex Heineman. Carpenter, who directed the original featuring Kurt Russell as outlaw war hero Snake Plissken, forced to infiltrate the dystopian walled prison city of New York and rescue the U.S. President or face death from an explosive device in his neck, is exec producing the title whose rights in other territories outside of the U.S. will be handled by France’s Studiocanal. That announcement followed news that broke in 2013 of its development at Fox and now, while still without a director, it hasn’t stopped the studio from bringing people aboard to help bring the new revisal to life. Enter Upgrade helmer Leigh Whannell whose work as a respective producer and director on select installments of the Insidious and Saw horror franchises have made a name for him in the last decade or so. There is a lot that has stirred in terms of casting options but the word now is that Robert Rodriguez is poised as the frontrunner to helm the picture. As The Tracking Board notes, Neil Cross is providing a script that that follows dystopian outlaw Colonel Robert “The Snake” Plissken on an 11-hour mission to find the villainous heir to an agrochemical and biotech corporation as a major hurricane approaches. Deadline is reporting that producer Joel Silver is joining forces between his production company, Silver Pictures, and Studio Canal to revive the classic 1981 post apocalyptic sci-fi action thriller, Escape From New York. The reboot will reportedly be the set-up for a new trilogy, with Silver producing along with Andrew Rona, and executive vice president of Silver Pictures, Alex Heineman serving as executive producer. Currently, the developmental process is undergoing a search for a writer to pen the screenplay, while the word is that actors Gerard Butler (300, Tomb Raider: The Cradle Of Life), Jeremy Renner (The Bourne Legacy, S.W.A.T.), Tom Hardy (Warrior, This Means War) and Liam Neeson (Darkman, Taken, Unknown) are at the top of the list for Silver’s latest re-imagining of the character, Snake Plissken, previously played by actor Kurt Russell.
