There is a lot for me to explore in cinema as there are tons of films I still need to see, including those of director Choi Dong-hoon. That said, his latest 1930’s-set war drama, Assassination is very much an introduction to his craft for my own experience as a moviegoer, and there are a ton of moving pieces to this story as it’s full of twists and turns that are sure to keep your attention. The film begins with as Yim (Lee Jung-Jae), a Korean rebel whose failed assassination attempt of a Japanese general leads to his capture and torture prior to having reportedly escaped within an inch of his life. Years later, he is now an interim agent for the incognito Korean government, and is assigned by the vice-president and his cohorts to assemble a team of assassins to mobilize in Shanghai. Director Choi Dong-hoon‘s newest period espionage thriller, Assassination, is poised for a limited U.S. release on August 7, 2015 as of a week ago. In the meantime, moviegoers at home in South Korea can look forward to catching this one close to one months from now on July 22, so it’s high time we saw a full trailer which is finally online with Choi‘s enlistment of principles, including actress Gianna Jun and actors Lee Jung-Jae, Oh Dal-su, Ha Jung-Woo, Cho Jin-woong and Lee Kyoung-young. Woochi and The Thieves helmer, director Choi Dong-hoon‘s new period thriller, Assassination is finally getting a release this July with a date pending, and a cast that assures our dear director in good company of great talent. This, on top of a vision with a production that takes place in China as well as South Korea, and we can pretty much get an idea of the immense scope and qualtiy Choi has crafted together for audiences. So far, 2014 has tuned out to be another landmark year for Korean action cinema, and Woochi (2009) and The Thieves (2012) writer and director Choi Dong-Hoon is looking to help continue that trend next summer. Set between China and Korea during the 1930’s, Assassination reunites Choi with actress Gianna Jun whose prior role in the less-than-impressive 2006 live-action adaptation, Blood: The Last Vampire, followed with two big theatrical hits, including The Thieves, and the 2013 flick, The Berlin File. This time, Assassination will have her leading a group of assassins charged by the Korean resistance to target key supporters of the Japanaese occupation. Joining Jun are her fellow The Thieves co-stars Lee Jung-Jae and Oh Dal-su, along with Kundo (2014) stars Ha Jung-Woo, Cho Jin-woong and Lee Kyoung-young.
