Taking cues from author Hamish Clayton’s 2011 novel “Wulf” is Lee Tamahori’s latest return to the director’s chair with period Māori epic drama, The Convert. A March 14 release is in order for the pic following its World Premiere in Toronto last Fall. New Zealand in the 1830s is a Māori world, dominated by tribal wars. Seeking redemption from a dark past, lay preacher Thomas Munro (GUY PEARCE) is on board a trading vessel heading to the newly established town of Epworth, a British settlement in that far corner of the world. When the ship anchors for repairs, Munro finds himself caught up in a battle between Māori tribes and witnesses the slaughter of innocents at the hands of chief Akatārewa (LAWRENCE MAKOARE). There’ll be several options going into next year for moviegoing if you enjoy the actor on screen, as Momentum Pictures recently snagged the rights to his new action crime thriller, Disturbing The Peace. The official trailer has arrived to start things off along with a theatrical, digital and VOD release set for January 17. A small-town marshal who hasn’t carried a gun since he left the Texas Rangers after a tragic shooting must pick up his gun again. This time to do battle with a gang of outlaw bikers that has invaded the town to pull off a brazen and violent heist. Shackleton directs from a script by Chuck Hustmyer, and with Devon Sawa, Kelly Greyson, Michael Sirow, Barbie Blank, Jacob Grodnik, Michael Bellisario, Dwayne Cameron, Elle E. Justin P. Lange, director behind the 2018 Tribeca fave, The Dark, is set to direct his own script for exorcism thriller, The Seventh Day. Billed as Training Day meets The Exorcist, Guy Pearce (Memento, Domino) will lead the cast for the tale of a rookie priest whose first day of training with a renowned exorcist plunges them deeper into hell on earth, blurring the lines between good and evil as their own demons emerge. Santiago Manes Moreno has reportedly set a feature directing debut with DDI repping international sales this month at Cannes. Long Gone Heroes in the name and has Guy Pearce and Ben Kingsley set to star about a discouraged ex-military operative hunted by former comrades while on a mission to track down a reporter in a combat zone who’s found herself embroiled in a political conspiracy. Moreno penned the project and will produce through 7One7 Films with Ines Mongil-Echandi and Noli Mollakuqe. Also producing are Jason Moring, Stanley Preschutti and Mark Padilla of Double Dutch International (DDI) with Jay Fragus serving as exec producer. (THR)
