With stunt multi-hyphenate Heo Myung-haeng set to smack down the Berlinale this year with The Roundup: Punishment, Netflix subscribers got a first glilpse of his directorial caliber reteaming him once more with actor Don Lee for dystopian thriller, Badland Hunters. I had my doubts about watching this before seeing Um Tae-hwa’s earthquake thriller Concrete Utopia given Heo’s movie was touted as a sequel, though the messaging on that end tapered off quite a bit as the months passed and really, Badland Hunters lands well enough as a standalone spectacle anyway. Indeed, the film does throw in a devastating seismic event at the top of the film but for the remaining hour and a half-plus, it’s pretty much forgotten about as we focus on Kim Bo-tong and Kwak Jae-min’s script and […]
Readying its world premiere for the 74th Berlinale is another round of meaty ham knuckle hero sandwiches on Don Lee-sized Wonder bread for The Roundup: Punishment. The film also reteams The Gangster, The Cop, The Devil star with fellow headliner Kim Moo-yul, and with none other than Badland Hunters director and stunt multihyphenate Heo Myung-haeng at the helm. “Monster Cop” Ma Seok-do is investigating an illegal online gambling organisation. As he begins to hunt down the criminals, he proposes an unexpected alliance. The Roundup: Punishment is fourth in line for a franchise that began with 2017 crime flick, The Outlaws, and continued subsequently with 2022’s The Roundup and last year’s The Roundup: No Way Out. The latest chapter also stars Park Ji-hwan and Lee Dong-hwi. Check out the teaser! Image credits: ABO Entertainment/Bigpunch Pictures/Hong Film/B.A. Entertainment

Formerly titled “The Wilderness,” the actor is joined by director and stunt specialist Heo Myung-haeng who takes to the helm for his second time after the two wrapped up production on directing the upcoming fourth installment of “The Outlaw” franchise, The Roundup: Punishment. Whereas the first film centered on the embattled survivors of a massive earthquake in a single-standing apartment building, the events of that film have since amped up the dystopia to a more global scale, coupled with an edgier, rousing tone fitting for Lee’s fanbase. Hence the following tagline: “The world has come to an end. The world calls upon the hunter.” That’s all we get […]
