Actor Iko Uwais has been reaching some increasingly newer peaks of late. The photo above, a still from his upcoming directorial debut, Timur, is just the latest first in a pending rollout of firsts hailing the martial arts star’s new production label, Uwais Pictures. Also in toe is martial arts thriller, Ikatan Darah (or Blood Bond), directed by Sidharta Tata who previously helmed TV dramas “Pertaruhan,” and action horror “Zona Merah”. Uwais and his team made the announcement at the Uwais Pictures Press Conference Launch & Slate Announcement event at XXI Plaza Senayan on Tuesday. Both films are part of a newly announced production slate under the Uwais Pictures banner, which itself specializes in fight choreography, action design and stunts. The label is set to launch the projects for the next edition of the European Film Market in Berlin which launches February 13. Timur is an action-thriller that follows the […]

The Eternals and Train To Busan actor Don Lee confirmed the development of Non Stop, a new action film whose existence went viral with the release of a concept poster late last year. The following quote comes via Variety’s Patrick Frater who interviewed Lee as his latest film, The Roundup: Punishment, is set to screen at the Berlinale. “I still have a project left for Marvel. Also ‘The Gangster, the Cop, the Devil,’ which I’m remaking with Sylvester Stallone. And then I’m getting ready for something called ‘Non Stop,’ which is an actual franchise where Asian martial art actors [‘The Raid’ star] Iko Uwais, [‘Ong Bak’ star Tony Jaa] and Jet Li – get together in one movie,” says Lee. The poster began making the rounds on Instagram and in news sites overseas in the Southeast. Actor Lee shared it on his Instagram page in December while Jaa later shared […]
In Los Angeles, California on 16th January 2024 XYZ Films has acquired all US rights to distribute the martial arts sci-fi action film SKYLINE: WARPATH, written and directed by action mastermind Liam O’Donnell (Beyond Skyline) and starring Iko Uwais (The Raid Franchise) and Scott Adkins (Undisputed), with Louis Mandylor, Randall J. Bacon and Yayan Ruhain rounding out the cast. The film is produced by Matthew Chausse and Evangelo Kioussis. XYZ Films will release the film domestically in early 2025. The rights deal was negotiated by Matthew Chausse on behalf of the filmmakers with Maxime Cottray from XYZ Films. Set within the “Skyline” universe and five years after the events of BEYOND SKYLINE, Sua (Iko Uwais) leads The Resistance against the aliens. When Sua discovers the powerful alien Radial Gauntlet, he must deal with both the corrupt Eric (Scott Adkins) and the army of alien invaders. In a partnership with XYZ Films, the original […]
Actor and action star Iko Uwais is tapped for the lead role in the tentatively titled Warpath, from director Liam O’Donnell (Beyond Skyline, Portals). The film will rejoin both star and director following their previous collaboration on 2017’s sci-fi sequel, Beyond Skyline, with Frank Grillo and Yayan Ruhian. Exact plot details are unknown, but I am told that Uwais will play “a small-time criminal who, after discovering a powerful artifact in the midst of a world-altering event, embarks on a perilous mission across Indonesia to save his people from warring factions of dangerous adversaries”. Uwais is also bringing his team on board for the film’s action design. Uwais has accrued a decade of screen credits that have earned him acclaim in the martial arts movie arena, with credits partly including Merantau and both installments of Gareth Huw Evans’ The Raid, Jesse Johnson’s action ensemble Triple Threat, Joe Taslim headliner The […]
Lionsgate is currently campaigning for the upcoming release of Expend4bles next week, and that includes its volley of preview clips that’ll be circulating online until then. The latest clip is available below as well, featuring Jason Statham and Iko Uwais which you can view below: Here’s the thing: We’ve been here before. Say what you will about Mile 22, I certainly have. Indeed, that film was in different hands, although it doesn’t change the fact that Uwais hasn’t had a proper presentation of his skillset as an action star apart from his feature film showcase in “Wu Assssins” spin-off, Fistful Of Vengeance on Netflix. Expend4bles is directed by Scott Waugh who we last heard from following the aforementioned streamer’s release of his Jackie Chan/John Cena headliner, Hidden Strike. The film is an ample serving of action for fans of the genre and Chan alike, but it’s important to note that […]
It’s been a while since I’ve written a proper article about The Raid films. I’ve posted, yeah, but it’s interesting that the film is gaining traction again, and not for nothing either. The Gareth Huw Evans-directed martial arts-driven crime saga was released ten years ago this week with a sequel that opened a little over two years later, furthering the advancement of Southeast Asian film fandom in the wake of his inaugural thriller, Merantau, and placing actor Iko Uwais squarely on the map for today’s generation of moviegoers and genre junkies alike. The film also paved the way for a style of cinematic action that was never really fully-fleshed out for Western audiences before – its essence inspired of course for prior films, and it wasn’t long until the subject matter of all filmmaker chatter on “The Raid style” of action was soon co-opted by talk of the “John Wick […]
Director Roel Reine’s latest return to martial arts and fantasy with Netflix’s Fistful Of Vengeance does a fine job of maintaining the same energy and flair of its preceding Wu Assassins series, and overall delivers largely on what fans can expect from a film headlined by Iko Uwais, an action star who broke ground more than ten years ago with some of the most elevated action cinema ever shot on camera. Reine continues a lot of that fanfare here, though lacking the same effect as its predecessors, but still bearing some fruit along the way. It’s a film that furthers along Uwais’ career into English-speaking territories for audiences as we approach his next appearance among the cadre of Hollywood action stars to be seen in the next Expendables film, and not for nothing either, but also a huge improvement in feature output for co-star Lewis Tan who reprises his role […]
Having planted a flag for HBO Max’s place in home streaming with the milestone release of Simon McQuoid’s Mortal Kombat, actor Lewis Tan is back in fighting form joining Wu Assassins leading man Iko Uwais and cohorts Lawrence Kao and JuJu Chan Szeto for the feature sequel, Fistful Of Vengeance. The film is directed by Roel Reiné (Halo, The Admiral) and now stands tall with a first-look trailer above to kick things off ahead of its February 17 launch on Netflix. Super-powered assassin Kai and friends Lu Xin and Tommy track a killer from San Francisco’s Chinatown to Thailand to avenge the death of a loved one. But their hunt soon entangles them with old enemies, a mysterious billionaire and an ancient mystical force bent on taking over the world. Iko Uwais (The Raid) stars with Lewis Tan (Mortal Kombat), Lawrence Kao (Max Steel) and Pearl Thusi (Queen Sono) in […]
Years ago, I became obsessed with listing my “top-tens” or “fives” in final fight scenes. There was a UK website that produced such lists and for their final fight scene list, it bothered me for the longest time that it never had the one featured in Drive between Mark Dacascos and Masaya Kato, so you can imagine how fulfilled I felt when the page loaded and I finally saw it listed. That website has long since disappeared, but the practice of listing fight faves stands strong among the action genre fandom to this day. Thus, I felt compelled to just list my own top ten in final fight scenes just to feel it out some and see what folks think. For this, I applied several factors into this analysis; While choreography and cinematography are both important elements, I made other deductions as well which include the scene’s connection to the […]
Iko Uwais is joining the fourth installment of The Expendables franchise which is currently filming from director Scott Waugh (Need For Speed). The former stuntman is directing from a script by Spenser Cohen therein revised by Max Adams and John Joseph Connolly. Mike Fleming Jr. and Justin Kroll broke the news at Deadline on Tuesday detailing Uwais’s roll as “a former military officer-turned-arms dealer with his own private army”. The film further reunites Uwais with fellow Triple Threat cohort Tony Jaa, next to a cast that groups a mix of franchise regulars and new faces, one with a story that will ultimately see the titular mercenary team leader, Barney Ross (played by Sylvester Stallone), exiting the franchise by the actor’s own accord and handing the reigns to fellpw franchise lead, Jason Statham. Dolph Lundgren and Randy Couture also star next to Megan Fox, Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson, Jacob Scipio, Sheila […]
Robert Schwentke’s Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins may be giving the iconic Hasbro property a bit of a face-lift for this particular feature film installment, but there’s no question the certain level of excitement there is for the current campaign. Fans will be sure to get a glimpse of what’s to come when the Paramount Pictures release shows out for its Comic Con@Home presentation on July 21. In the meantime, check out the newest official trailer and behind-the-scenes featurette, both which dive much more deeper into the lore that now places title star Henry Golding front and center, along with Andrew Koji, Samara Weaving, Peter Mensah, Iko Uwais, Ursula Corbero, Takehiro Hira and Haruka Abe. Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins stars Henry Golding as Snake Eyes, a tenacious loner who is welcomed into an ancient Japanese clan called the Arashikage after saving the life of their heir apparent.
