Guy Ritchie will direct the follow-up to Doug Liman’s reboot of the 1989 action classic.
Guy Ritchie will direct the follow-up to Doug Liman’s reboot of the 1989 action classic.
This little news byte made it past me as I’d been recuperating from a shitty fever this week. Indeed though, a Road House sequel is happening, and I’m hear for it. Jake Gyllenhaal starred in the remake along with a bevy of talents that reimagined the 1989 action thriller that starred the late Patrick Swayze. Doug Liman directed the film which centers on a downtrodden ex-fighter whose latest hire at a Road House in the Florida Keys forces him to confront his darker side when the town’s worst auspices begin surfacing. There’s a whole history of behind-the-scenes brouhaha and legal stuff that occurred before (and after) the film’s launch back in March, which imaginably nearly upended the PR campaign. Luckily, the film’s two leads, including Conor McGregor got in front of the controversy to puts some glitz and glam before the media. The result? Welp… Per Amazon MGM Studios, its […]
It’s been a little weird. Crazy, even. Reading about all that’s happened since Doug Liman’s Road House went into post-production was pretty troublesome. Reporters over at Variety did some good work in covering the fallout as well, and I kind of wonder if some long-term good could come from the film’s streaming release, even if at one point the director himself opined to the contrary in hopes of a theatrical opening. I wouldn’t have minded a big screen presentation myself. Point in fact, I got a little overconfident when I RSVP’d to an event screening being hosted by Jazz At Lincoln Center with a two-person pass a few days ago; I had to reneg though, seeing as life is still lifeing at the moment. Ultimately, my only option would be to take in the film per access to Prime thanks to a friend. To that end, I guess the only […]
I’m still of the opinion that Doug Liman’s Amazon MGM production of Road House still deserves its run in theaters. At any rate, I’m looking forward to it in March as it arrives on Prime Video for the next action-packed iteration of the classic thriller here starring Jake Gyllenhaal. On par for the campaign as of Tuesday is a slate of character posters which you can view below featuring the cast. Liman directs the film as it centers on a down-and-out MMA fighter whose run of bad luck escalates when a new job at a beleagured road house bar forces our protagonist to Tango with a gang of henchmen working for an unscrupulous businessman looking to turn the place into a resort. Check out the posters below and click here to catch trailer if you missed it.
Director Doug Liman wrote a compelling and nuanced op-ed presented at Deadline on Wednesday, elucidating the case for his boycott of the upcoming SXSW premiere of his new movie, Road House. In the article, Liman details how Amazon slated the movie for a streaming release, thus reversing the film’s initial theatrical prospects following the company’s acquisition of MGM into its library back in Spring of 2022. He also highlights the importance of sustaining theatrical releases to maintain the film industry at large, citing a number of things including film performance positives on streaming platforms resulting from theatrical windows, to computers lacking the “experience of laughing and cheering and crying with a packed audience in a dark theater”. It’s a fascinating read and worth bearing in mind as the film approaches its opening night premiere on March 8, followed by its March 21 launch on the streamer. As such, the upcoming […]
Director Guy Ritchie is off to galavant some more as he revs up The Ministry With Gentlemanly Warfare with Deadline‘s latest casting announcements made late early Thursday. For this, we turn to MGM and the official trailer revealed for Jake Gyllenhaal starrer, The Covenant, which opens this April. The trailer also comes with this week’s poster debut teasing Gyllenhaal’s new role alongside actor Dar Salim with a story centered on a U.S. military sergeant who returns to Afghanistan to repay his debt to a local interpreter who helped rescue him during a botched survey mission on the last day of his tour. The Covenant also stars Emily Beecham and Antony Starr. Lead pic: Dar Salim (top) as Ahmed and Jake Gyllenhaal (bottom) as Sgt. It was last November when the long-gestating remake of 1989 United Artists action thriller, Road House, managed to set actor Jake Gyllenhaal and director Doug Liman together on the project. As of Tuesday, the film, once designated for MGM, is now home at Prime Video with additional casting info announcing Billy Magnussen, Daniela Melchior, Gbemisola Ikumelo, Lukas Gage. Liman will direct from a script by Anthony Bagarozzi and Charles Mondry, which “follows a former UFC fighter (Gyllenhaal) who takes a job as a bouncer at a rough-and-tumble roadhouse in the Florida Keys, but soon discovers that not everything is what it seems in this tropical paradise.” Rounding out the cast are Hannah Love Lanier, Travis Van Winkle, B.K. Cannon, Arturo Castro, Dominique Columbus, Beau Knapp, and Bob Menery. Joel Silver, who worked on the original film starring Patrick Swayze, is producing for Silver Pictures. Exec producing are JJ Hook, Alison Winter, […]

Active developments toward a live-action adaptation of the hit Ubisoft game, The Division, have been stirring moreso since 2016 with the casting of actor Jake Gyllenhaal and with stunt action feature hitmaker David Leitch tapped to direct just last Spring. Going forward, the word is out with Netflix announcing its acquisition of the feature film that now sets screenwriter Rafe Judkins to put pen-to-paper on the project. Joining Gyllenhaal to star and produce will be actress Jessica Chastain who will partake in the same capacity. A group of civilians, trained to operate in catastrophic times, are activated in an attempt to save who and what remains. Leitch’s 87North banner will produce alongside Gyllenhaal’s Nine Stories, Chastain’s […]

It’s only been a few months since Ubisoft’s third-person shooter, Tom Clancy’s The Division, released on shelves to the tune of positive ratings up to $330 million dollars in sales. That’s a huge chunk of money, so it’s reasonable to believe Ubisoft sees enough potential in the property to turn it into a viable feature film with great prospects. Well, that’s exactly what they’re doing according to a report from Variety and with none other than Southpaw and Nightcrawler star Jake Gyllenhaal starring. The report states that a writer is currently being sought after to pen the script casting Gyllenhaal as an agent of the Strategic Homeland Division, assigned to help rebuild its branch in New York City while investigating the nature of a smallpox outbreak and defending against criminal activity lurking in the background. This marks the second round for Gyllenhaal in a property developed in part by Ubisoft […]
Perhaps one of the biggest and most memorable moviegoing experiences of the summer of 2015 has to be director Antoine Fuqua‘s stellar new boxing drama, Southpaw. Kurt Sutter provided the script and was host to a slew of strong performances led by actor Jake Gyllenhaal who fully immersed himself into the role of Billy Hope, a champion boxer forced to redeem himself and fight for his family following a personal tragedy. It was an intense, poignant and thrilling character study with Rachel McAdams and the impressive Oona Laurence on hand, along with supporting actor Forest Whitaker lending his stellar signature craft to the screen, that truly gives you a grounded and inspiring story with a perfectly imperfect protagonist to root for. On top of this, the notion of this film following Gyllenhaal’s accolades in last year’s Nightcrawler a possible Oscar contender is a prospect that The Weinstein Company is clearly keeping in mind right now, and so […]
You can imagine that it’s no easy feat to be an actor and immerse yourself in a role so physically enduring as that of a professional fighter. Academy Award® nominee, actor Jake Gyllenhaal can surely speak from experience with the work he’s put in for the lead role of a champion boxer in the upcoming sports drama, Southpaw, and a new featurette is now running that highlights just a sample of what Gyllenhaal endured to help bring the film to the current forefront of its self-sustaining Oscar hype. SYNOPSIS: From director Antoine Fuqua (TRAINING DAY) and writers Kurt Sutter (SONS OF ANARCHY) and Richard Wenk (THE MECHANIC) comes SOUTHPAW – the story of Billy “The Great” Hope, Junior Middleweight Boxing Champion of the World. When tragedy strikes and he loses it all, Billy enters the battle of his life as he struggles to become a contender once again and win […]

Jake Gyllenhaal is the lead and in full boxing athlete fashion in a story written by Kurt Sutter that sees our golden boy trounced on by an onslaught of tragedy, grief, and almost anything life would through. When tragedy strikes and he loses it all, Billy enters the battle of his life as he struggles to become a contender once again and win back those he loves. Rachel McAdams also stars with Curtis Jackson and Forest Whitaker as the major supporting backdrop of this […]
If you take away nothing else from the most recent hype behind winning director Antoine Fuqua‘s new boxing drama, Southpaw, you can take the fact that may lend something truly entertaining. Beyond that, anyone familiar with Fuqua’s work can easily expect this one to carry a tone worthy of more than praise with a heavily-engaged Jake Gyllenhaal spearheading such a riveting underdog story written by Kurt Sutter, and a great supporting cast on hand. SYNOPSIS: From acclaimed director Antoine Fuqua (TRAINING DAY) and starring Academy Award® nominated Jake Gyllenhaal (NIGHTCRAWLER, BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN) comes a story of tragedy, loss and the painful road to redemption… Billy “The Great” Hope (Gyllenhaal) is the reigning Junior Middleweight Champion whose unorthodox stance, the so-called “Southpaw,” consists of an ineloquent, though brutal, display of offensive fighting…one fueled by his own feelings of inadequacy and a desperate need for love, money and fame. With a beautiful […]
Last year’s release of the Dan Gilroy-directed Nightcrawler became a winner among movie goers for actor Jake Gyllenhaal who proves time and again to have the caliber to deliver some of the intriguing performances to date. This year, the actor is back, beefed up and bound for more glory with his newest effort, Southpaw, now in the good company of filmmaker Antoine Fuqua with Kurt Sutter and Richard Wenk penning the story of Billy Hope a young boxing champion forced to overcome immense odds amid tragedy, self-destruction and judicial indignance to gain his daughter back from the system. Rachel McAdams also stars along with Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson and Forest Whitaker with appearances by Rita Ora and The Expendables 3 co-star, boxer and actor Victor Ortiz. The Weinstein Company is giving this one a July 31 release in the U.S., and thankfully we have a trailer to show just what […]
It seems these are trying times for the current preproduction of David Ayer‘s new anti-hero superflick, Suicide Squad as actor Jake Gyllenhaal has since declined to replace Tom Hardy for the role of Rick Flagg among the all-star cast. No need for worry though if boxing dramas are more your speed and you’re eager to see the actor in something real soon, because his newest film, Southpaw is on the way, directed by Antoine Fuqua following stellar theatrical run with The Equalizer last September. Written by Kurt Sutter and Richard Wenk, Gyllenhaal plays Billy Hope, a young, cocky middleweight champion whose promising career and life as a family man are cut short when tragedy strikes, throwing him in a downward spiral with only the help of an amateur trainer with demons of his own, to help him get back on his feet. Much to the film’s credit, Gyllenhaal‘s previous performance […]
Looks like perfect timing for Nightcrawler star, actor Jake Gyllenhaal whose most recent debut still of his upcoming boxing drama, Southpaw, from Antoine Fuqua (pictured) is currently making the rounds. Director David Ayer‘s forthcoming production of the DC Comics live-action adaptation of Suicide Squad is only several months away from commensing principal photography up over in Canada, and Gyllenhaal’s going to need to apply those movie muscles once again now that actor Tom Hardy is no longer starring. The Wrap reports that Hardy’s scheduling conflicts between working on The Revenant with helmer Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu prior to joining the promotional tour for Warner Bros. Mad Max: Fury Road between mid-March through May 15 when the latter film releases, possibly leaving room for Gyllenhaal to take his place. Hardy was listed in the official press release late last year for the role of Rick Flag, leader of the titular ragtag team […]
Director Antoine Fuqua has just begun filming his latest boxing drama in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania for The Weinstein Company titled Southpaw, and this week brings the start of a second significant step forward in acting with a co-starring role for former boxing champion and The Expendables 3 co-star, Victor Ortiz. The film is written by Richard Wenk and Sons Of Anarchy series creator Kurt Sutter, and casts Ortiz as “Ramone”, fellow up-and-coming boxer whose story will be attributed somewhat similarly to Ortiz‘s own life story leading up to his career as a WBC Welterweight champion until earlier this year. Ortiz joins lead Prisoners co-star, actor Jake Gyllenhaal who himself leads the film as “Billy Hope”, a welterweight boxer rising in the ranks while his while his personal life falls apart. Actress Rachel McAdams and Star Wars VII cast member, award-winning actress Lupita Nyong’o, and actors Forest Whitaker and Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson […]
