The Eternals and Train To Busan actor Don Lee confirmed the development of Non Stop, a new action film whose existence went viral with the release of a concept poster late last year. The following quote comes via Variety’s Patrick Frater who interviewed Lee as his latest film, The Roundup: Punishment, is set to screen at the Berlinale.
Following the Eureka/MVD output deal, the official details are now out for Black Mask, director Daniel Lee’s high-octane 1996 sci-fi martial arts action thriller starring Jet Li, Karen Mok and late screen thesp Patrick Lung. The upcoming Eureka Classics re-release marks latest update from the deal as one of two titles announced last week, with Black Mask resurfacing once again following its theatrical U.S. release from Artisan Entertainment in 1999.
Director Daniel Lee’s 1996 gory action sci-fi thriller, Black Mask, will get a hyper-kinetic Blu-Ray revival in North America later this year through a new deal announced on Tuesday between genre labels MVD and London-based Eureka Entertainment. The two brands announced the distribution deal which would pave the way for a North American rollout of Eureka’s award-winning Blu-ray catalog to North America for the first time.
December is chock-filled with some Asian action delights over at Well Go USA’s niche streaming channel, Hi-YAH!, and the company has a brand new promo which you can view below, firstly introducing footage from Channel Choi’s Kowloon Walled City (2021), starring Shi Yan Neng (a.k.a. Xing Yu) as a migrant from Dongbei who finds himself up against evil forces to protect friends within the notorious city.
Tsui Hark’s Once Upon A Time In China film series became one among many quintessential investments in introducing the world to one of Hong Kong Cinema’s most renowned film stars to date, with Jet Li in the title role of legendary healer and pugilist, Wong Fei-Hung.
News seems to be fast-tracking this week for Walt Disney Pictures amid the current progress toward reviving the studio’s animated gender-bending classic, Mulan.
Following the addition of international action star and actor Donnie Yen for the role of Commander Tang on Wednesday, three new names are now circling the live-action production: International action star Jet Li (Hero, The Expendables Trilogy), distinguished actress Gong Li (Curse Of The Golden Flower, Miami Vice, The Monkey King 2) and New Zealand actress Xana Tang (Filthy Rich, Dead Lucky).
As Rebecca Sun’s exclusive at The Hollywood Reporter on Wednesday confirms, Jet Li is in final talks to play the Emperor of China. The report also cites at least two moves signaling departures from the Barry Cook/Tony Bancroft-directed 1998 film, highlighting actress Li for the role of a powerful witch, and actress Tang who will play Mulan’s sister.
Actress Crystal Liu is headlining the cast as production readies for an August start ahead of a March 27, 2020 release with Whale Rider helmer Niki Caro directing. Succeeding from its folkloric roots, Mulan tells of a young girl who seizes her ailing father’s armor and conscription to serve in his place when the emperor enlists one male from each household, at a time when women performing any duties other than the confines at home was considered taboo and strictly forbidden.
Lauren Hynek, Rick Jaffa, Amanda Silver and Elizabeth Martin are penning the script. Chris Bender, Jason Reed and Jake Weiner are producing with Bill Kong (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Hero, Rise Of A Legend, Monster Hunt) executive producing.
Jet Li is repped by Current Entertainment and Bloom Hergott while Gong Li is repped by ICM, and Xana Tang is repped by Gail Cowan Management and Cunningham Escott Slevin & Doherty (CESD).
Hat tip goes to Ukranian actress and stuntwoman Karina Bershadskaya who stars in the video, thus showcasing just why it is I’m thankful to be following her work since last December. (Her stunt reel is also a thing of beauty. ?)
Apparently Ma himself has also shared a longstanding interest in sharing some screentime with some of Asia’s biggest stars and from what I hear, he’ll be getting in some fisticuffs with the cast as well. Gong Shou Dao was filmed Hangzhou a few months ago and a cast host to Li and frontman Ma along with CTHD: Sword Of Destiny co-star Natasha Liu Bordizzo, Olympic boxing champion Zhou Shiming, Sumo champion Akinori Asashoryu, celebrated action cinema household names Sammo Hung, Donnie Yen, Wu Jing, Yuen Woo-Ping, upcoming Triple Threat star Tony Jaa, fellow action legend Tony Ching Siu-Tung, and League Of Gods and Fearless co-star Jacky Heung.
The past few weeks have been stirring the fan fervor a bit between Wu Jing’s current Hong Kong run with hit sequel, Wolf Warrior 2, as well as Donnie Yen in lieu of his upcoming crime drama, Chasing The Dragon. Both names circulated the rumormill in hyperbolic fanboy fashion next to that of action star Jet Li (League Of Gods) who himself scaled back substantially on physically demanding roles in recent years due to his own health.
Whatever the case may be now, of course there’s a photo flying around on social media with no context to it whatsoever, and doing nothing to ease the curiousity with specifics. For this, we now have some much-needed clarity with news of the new shortfilm, Master, now in production with Yen, Wu and Li involved. Unknown are the respective degrees of involvement while it is also reported that Jack Ma invited the trio to work together on this project.
Regarding the above photo, it was taken with congratulations to Yen in the wake of his recent fourteen-year wedding anniversary with wife and business partner Cissy Wang. Additionally, Yen himself posted the pic on his Weibo in response to other perpetuated rumors pertaining to some sort of rivalry between Yen and his S.P.L. co-star.
Jack Ma is the founder and executive chairman of Alibaba Group whose film shingle recently partnered with Beijing Culture in the weeks that followed the $870+ million dollar success of Wu’s aforementioned starring/directing sequel which also stars Celina Jade and Frank Grillo. A third Wolf Warrior installment is also in the works.
Whether or not Master leads to an actual partnership on a feature film before long remains to be seen. At any rate, you needn’t look far within the niche to see fans already on edge. Eyes and ears, kids.
