The Bumilangit Cinematic Universe is officially setting sail to North America with the official trailer for Joko Anwar’s comic book adaptation, Gundala. There’s lots of action thrown in for this particular asset seeing as the domestic trailer was a straight tease of things to come, and so I can see the necessary push to appeal to the West. We like when things fly, fight and go boom, so, this is nice.
Indonesian cinema’s resurgence in the last decade now stakes its claim even further in comic book fandom with an adaptation of Hasmi’s local 1960s fan fave, Gundala. As of yesterday, Matthew Scott’s exclusive at The Hollywood Reporter has published a spotlight of the latest adaptation of Hasmi’s comic by celebrated director Joko Anwar whose new film begins the launch of a superhero cinematic universe under the newly-merged Screenplay Bumilangit Film.
The weekend was bustling for attendees at Indonesia Comic Con where director Joko Anwar was in attendance to pitch what he has thusfar with upcoming superhero adaptation, Gundala. No need to fret over too much mystery about the project now due for a potential Summer 2019 rollout as the director also presented a brief teaser to give audiences a whiff of what’s to come.
The original comic, which spawned up to 23 entries through 1982, was also the crux of director Hanung Bramantyo’s own efforts to adapt the comic book for moviegoers back in 2014 with Erick Tohir at Mahaka Pictures. Anwar’s own take on the franchise will transplant its Yogyakarta-set story to the city of Jakarta for creative purposes.
