Kazuya Shiraishi’s 11 REBELS are assembling for a Summer release from WELL GO USA!
Japanese action fans in North America can gladly rely on Well Go USA in the new year for its pending release of Kazuya Shiraishi’s new period thriller, 11 Rebels. The film is directed by Kazuya Shiraishi who reteams with The Blood Of Wolves scribe Junya Ikegami, whose script is based off of an earlier draft by late Toei veteran Kazuo Kasahara. The historical betrayal by the Shibata clan of Niigata happened in the shadows of the Boshin War, the fiercest war in Japanese history. From history to the big screen, Shiraishi Kazuya’s adaptation elevates the late, great Kasahara Kazuo’s script, with riveting action by stars Yamada Takayuki, Nakano Taiga, and the talented ensemble cast. The 11-member suicide squad takes on a hopeless fortress-defense mission. When the interests of the Shibata clan, the old shogunate, and the new government collide, their heroic battle begins. The hell-bent rebels enthrall in this timeless […]
Kazuya Shiraishi will soon be making headway onto Netflix with upcoming series drama “The Queen Of Villains”. In the meantime, the man behind this NYAFF 2024 favorite is back with another in the form of 11 Rebels, one of last year’s notable spotlights under Toei’s banner at AFM last year. Shiraishi reteams with his The Blood Of Wolves screenwriter Junya Ikegami who penned the script based on a long-shelved draft by late Toei vet Kazuo Kasahara who penned most of the Battles Without Honor And Humanity yakuza saga, and a number of other classics. 11 Rebels is set in 1868 during the Meiji Restoration when the flames of the Boshin War begin descending unto the small Echigo domain of Shibata. The domain’s castle lord requisitions the services of eleven prisoners for the all-or-nothing task of protecting his fortress in exchange for their freedom. The film also rejoins Shiraishi with his […]

6.5 min. read The Blood Of Wolves and A Lesson In Murder helmer Kazuya Shiraishi is back with another offering to the festival masses. This time, his work comes inspired by a classic rakugo play that serves as the basis for author Masato Kato’s novel which released in March, and Shiraishi’s subsequent samurai drama which Kato also penned. Released in Japan back in May as Gobangiri (a.k.a. Goban Cut), Shiraishi’s new film gets a frontal rebrand as Bushido, which bodes as an aptly fitting title to welcome moviegoers abroad. And not for nothing either, with the story of a vagrant samurai whose longstanding peace post-service results in a slew of accusations that put his honor at stake in the worst way. Set in Yoshiwara, we meet Kakunoshin (Tsuyoshi Kusanagi), a widower, and seal maker who lives in a poor tenement house with his daughter, Okinu (Kaya Kiyohara), who makes kimonos. […]

The film takes its cues from a longstanding rakugo which also serves as the basis for the upcoming novel releasing in March, both written by Masato Kato. What’s more is the casting of Tsuyoshi Kusanagi who reunites with Kato who previously penned Kusangi’s starring role in the 2006 disaster thriller from director Shinji Higuchi, Sinking Of Japan. Central to Gobangiri is the story of Kakunoshin (Tsuyoshi Kusanagi), an earnest and prideful samurai who loves a good game of Go. Ousted from his domain following false accusation, he now lives in a poor tenement home with his daughter, Okinu (Kaya […]
