The official trailer is now live for Fumihiko Sori’s latest effort, Hakkenden, which opens in Japan theaters on October 25. We also have a slate of character posters along with some official key art that went public over the summer. Set in early 1800s, the film depicts a story behind the creation of HAKKENDEN(八犬伝), a novel which has been passed down for many generations and is said to have become the root of the heroism of Japanese entertainment. With a great performance of award winning actor, Koji Yakusho, and with a combination of a spectacular visualization of the fictional part from HAKKENDEN, the film also captures how one creator accomplished to finish an epic novel through an agony and struggle, along with a friendship between Hokusai. After spending a good portion of the past decade bringing Fullmetal Alchemist to life on the big screen, director Fumihiko Sori is back to take on a new property with Hakkenden. Sori directs from a screenplay he adapted from Futaro Yamada’s novels in the early eighties, with a cast led by Koji Yakusho who scored Best Actor at the 76th edition of Cannes for his role in Wim Wenders’s Perfect Days. For this, we get a full-on dive into the imaginative and spectacular samurai-themed world explored in Hakkenden, or “The Legend Of The Eight Dog Samurai” as some would know it. Sori’s Hakkenden casts Yakusho in the role of Edo period novelist Bakin Takizawa, who spent 28 years writing 106 volumes of his heroic tale (even as his health deteriorated) with the help of ukiyo-e artist Katsushika Hokusai, played by actor Seiyo Uchino (Fullmetal Alchemist 2 & 3). Call Me Chihiro and Punk Samurai Slash Down actor Ryuya Wakaba will star in Penalty Loop, according to a press release published on multiple Japanese news outlets on Tuesday. Additional casting announcements were made as well with Rio Yamashita (Aristocrats), Yusuke Iseya (Rurouni Kenshin franchise) and South Korean actor Jin Dae-young (Drive My Car) also headlining. The film marks the second directorial effort from Shinji Araki who debuted at the helm with 2020 mystery drama, The Town Of Headcounts. He directs from his own script which sees Wakaba in the role of Jun Iwamori, a grieving man who after successfully carrying out the perfect plan to avenge his murdered girlfriend, Yui (Yamashita), finds himself mysteriously repeating the same day and killing Yui’s murderer, Mizoguchi (Iseya), over and over again.
