In prior weeks I was a little shocked at how violent John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein’s new film, Game Night. I missed out on Vacation and figured this was going to be a straight up, goofy comedy only to spot a trailer tease in weeks prior of a stunt goon getting sucked into the propellers of an aircraft engine. Yes, you do see that and a whole lot more in the official trailer now online featuring actor Jason Bateman and Rachel McAdams as a competitive couple who find each other, fall in love, make friends and as the narrative would have it, find them way in over their head. Vacation helmers Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley are back in the saddle at Warner Bros. Pictures with principal photography is underway in Atlanta, Georgia for the new action comedy, Game Night. Jason Bateman (Horrible Bosses) and Oscar nominee Rachel McAdams (Marvel’s Doctor Strange), are leading a cast from a script by Accepted scribe Mark Perez and with Bateman producing with John Davis, and with Marc S. Fischer, John Fox and James Garavente executive producing. From New Line Pictures, Game Night stars Bateman and McAdams along with Kyle Chandler (Manchester By The Sea) in the respective roles of Max and Annie, whose weekly couples game night gets kicked up a notch when Max’s charismatic brother, Brooks, arranges a murder mystery party with all the trimmings, including fake thugs and faux federal agents. Review: MANCHESTER BY THE SEA Acclimates Drama With Perspective And Revelation

Manchester By The Sea opens on a flashback, but you don’t realize this until later. That’s not a spoiler, it is thematic layering. Director Kenneth Lonergan began his career on the stage in 1996, finding success with his play, This Is Our Youth. And it seems that Lonergan -interesting that the first part of his surname is “loner”- has continued to explore, and mature within, a study of recurring themes; maturity through loss, a discovery of love’s thesis through our responsibilities to one another, to our loved ones and to community, and death. Revelation in death, through means of what can be described as an earnest deconstructive lens pointed towards our collective misunderstandings of death (of existence itself, and therefore the quest!) as a consequence of fear.
