Lionsgate is proudly joining the ceremony as Mamoru Oshii’s cult animated cyberpunk classic, Ghost In The Shell, gets a tricked-out home release beginning September 8 on 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack (plus Blu-ray and Digital 4K Ultra HD) and Digital 4K Ultra HD. The re-release commemorates the 25th Anniversary of one of the most critically acclaimed anime films of all time, based on the iconic work of mangaka Shirow Masamune. The new version also boasts a Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos remastering, with featured fan-favorite commemorative artwork from pop illustrator Martin Ansin, and much more. 2029: A female cybernetic government agent, Major Motoko Kusanagi, and the Internal Bureau of Investigations are hot on the trail of “The Puppet Master,” a mysterious and threatening computer virus capable of infiltrating human hosts. Together with her fellow agents from Section 9, Kusanagi embarks on a high-tech race against time to capture the omnipresent […]
To say the least, the division spanning the reception of director Rupert Sanders’s treatment of popular manga/anime property, Ghost In The Shell has been nothing short of stark. Indeed the film has been much better received in its press push overseas than even I expected while there are many who still stake the film as an example of the continuing obscurity of Asian talent. The marketing has also been pretty compelling following its several televised micro teasers last year and the trailer which convincingly sells itself as a worthwhile adaptation of Shirow Masumane’s 1989 cyberpunk manga and subsequent 1995 anime film from heralded filmmaker Oshii Mamoru. Oshii himself endorses Paramount’s investment and with a little over two months left, hopefully this will be enough for the fans to calm their woes – otherwise the film may be in for an entirely different result. In the meantime, consider this as part […]
I’ll be frank: I’m only familiar with a handful of anime in my lifetime thusfar with just a few streches into the work of Headgear’s own Oshii Mamoru. I’ve been covering him for a few years now of all three I’ve been writing this blog and I’m fully aware I have a lot to catch up on, including the live-action renditions of The Next Generation: Patlabor. Alas, having seen a few Ghost In The Shell films and the 2001 movie Avalon aren’t enough. Suffice it to say though, he’s a proven filmmaker and highly versatile at his craft. Moreover, it’s not everyday I get to interview a star of one of his films, and so to have the distinct pleasure of being able to communicate with actress Melanie St. Pierre and to share her perspective on her new role in Oshii’s newest CGI-hybrid sci-fi epic, Garm Wars: The Last Druid, […]
I seldom get to watch an Oshii Mamoru film these days, so to be able to finally screen Garm Wars: The Last Druid is indeed a treat. As far as critiquing is concerned though, it was a little less enthusing than expected while still presenting quite a few gems along the way right down to its epic finish. Oshii and scribe Geoffrey Gunn wrote the script which centers on a cloned supersoldier named Khara, played by Melanie St. Pierre. The film ventures into a spectacular journey of self-discovery beginning in a tumultuous time when the world of Annwn, forged by an ancient deity with the creation of eight different tribes known as the Garm, is plunged into war, descending the tribal populace to three – each battling for dominance. Lance Henriksen plays Wydd, a rogue Kumtach tribal elder on the run with a Nascien, the last remaining Druid that holds the […]
Tokyo Tribe, Torakage and Danger Dolls co-star, actress Seino Nana is on a roll this year as her latest, Nowhere Girl, is currently making the film festival rounds having already premiered for this year’s installment of the New York Asian Film Festival. Several teasers are also circulating but you can certainly catch a full trailer available below ahead of the film’s Japan release on July 25, and much to the credit of action fans, Seino’s got all the right moves to delight viewers in a role for a story that further cements female action movie stardom. via NYAFF: Ghost in the Shell director Mamoru Oshii’s latest live-action film “Tokyo Mukokuseki Shoujo” centers on Ai (Nana Seino, the all-around kicker and piece of smoking hotness from Tokyo Tribe), a student at an all-girls’ art high school. Her natural talent for art provokes the fury and envy of both the adults around […]
Fanfare remains ongoing for the long standing Patlabor franchise in its currently-rebooted iteration, The Next Generation: Patlabor. A seven part episodic series of twelve 48-minute shows leading up to its feature film back in May did the trick in revitalizing Headgear’s popular manga/anime franchise as per the brainchild of acclaimed co-creator Oshii Mamoru spearheading the project along with a handful of directors, and it’s been no easy feat. The post-production process ultimately took its toll and the film proceeding the series, The Next Generation: Patlabor – Tokyo War, written and directed by Oshii, ultimately led to the decision of leaving room for two versions. As such, following an announcement a week after its theatrical release back in May, the latest trailer for the film’s “Director’s Cut” version is now up and running with 27 minutes of new footage to add more to the intense drama and resolve surrounding our newfound […]
The past two years have been nothing short of electric for the cast and crew behind the 12-episode roll-out of Oshii Mamoru’s live-action series, The Next Generation: Patlabor. Episodes are currently streaming online via various Otaku sites, and next month, the feature film culminating the show following its announcement in 2013 will finally release in the form of The Next Generation: Patlabor – Tokyo War. SYNOPSIS: At the end of the 20th century, there was a rise in crime due to the illegal use of Labors, humanoid robots specifically designed for heavy industrial work. To combat these new Labor crimes, the Metropolitan Police Department created the Special Vehicle Section 2 Patrol Labor unit. But by the early 21st century, the decline in Labor crimes has many thinking the so-called “Patlabor” program is no longer necessary and should be discontinued due to its high cost and maintenance. As Special Vehicle Section […]
The wait be over soon enough in Japan when director Oshii Mamoru‘s feature-length installment of the year-long project, The Next Generation: Patlabor arrives this summer. The film is a darker-toned progression of the more light-hearted intricate seven-part series that kicked off last April resuming a new era of the classic story based on the award-winning 1988 manga/anime property from Headgear, with actress Mano Erina as the new face of the cinematic venture with Fukushi Seiji, Oota Rina, Chiba Shigeru and Kakei Toshio also starring. A new trailer has now gone viral following its teaser at the top of the year, which now pits the heroes, the surviving economic remnants of Section 2 Division 2 of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police, against a terrorist who takes the city of Tokyo hostage along with its citizens. The series has gained quite a momentum since last year so the new film should offer an […]
