Talk about consistency… If there’s one thing I admire about the Marvel films, it’s the fact that they all have a way of still delivering compelling stories that drive the curiosity. It certainly starts with the teasers and trailers and how they package the little morsels required to fascinate audiences, and the same certainly goes for Matt Shankman’s The Fantastic Four: First Steps, as of Thursday. Set against the vibrant backdrop of a 1960s-inspired, retro-futuristic world, Marvel Studios’ ‘The Fantastic Four: First Steps’ introduces Marvel’s First Family—Reed Richards/Mister Fantastic, Sue Storm/Invisible Woman, Johnny Storm/Human Torch and Ben Grimm/The Thing as they face their most daunting challenge yet. The newest official trailer is out and features Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach in the titular quartet. The film also features Julia Garner in the Shalla-Bal iteration of Marvel mainstay Silver Surfer, returning the silvery protagonist back to the […]
It has been nearly six years since Marvel Television’s Netflix era of comic book superhero thrills, followed by Disney+’s acquisition of all present shows and subsequent phase-interwoven production thereafter. At long last, we now have Daredevil: Born Again, featuring Charlie Cox and Vincent D’Onofrio returning in fine fashion following their respective cameos in “Hawkeye,” “She-Hulk,” and “Echo.” The official trailer is now here as well, which also includes appearances by returning actors Jon Bernthal and Wilson Bethel in the respective roles/alter-egos of Frank Castle/The Punisher, and Benjamin Pointdexter/Bullseye. Rounding out the cast are a mix of new and reuniting names including Elden Henson as Foggy, and Deborah Ann Woll as Karen, and actors Margarita Levieva Zabryna Guevara, Nikki James, Genneya Walton, Arty Froushan, Clark Johnson, Michael Gandolfini, and Ayelet Zurer. In Marvel Television’s “Daredevil: Born Again,” Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox), a blind lawyer with heightened abilities is fighting for justice […]
Hunger Games: The Ballad Of Songbirds & Snakes scribe Michael Lesslie will write the next X-Men movie, according to the trades on Tuesday. A new film in the franchise had been the talk for some years now but things are finally inching a little closer after the end of last year’s strikes. The Marvel property launched in the comic pages in the 1960s from creators Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, chronicling the efforts of a band of superheros to mitigate diplomacy in a world then-discovering the existence of mutants. Led by telepath Charles Xavier who founded his School for the Gifted, those efforts often resulted in battling foes both human and mutant alike. The franchise elevated into screen success in the 90s, as well as the most recent revival on Disney+, “X-Men ’97”. On the live-action front, 20th Century Fox got the ball rolling with X-Men in 2000, landing twelve […]
Film duo Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead (The Endless, Synchronic) are adding to their Marvel creds following their work on Disney+ series “Moon Knight” well as season two of Loki. The two are now joining the current production of Daredevil: Born Again, to direct the remaining episodes of the series following recent reports of the studio’s change of creative direction and reconfiguration of its TV production model. They join Dario Scardpane who is showrunner on the series with former showrunners Chris Ord and Matt Corman exec producing. Long prior to the show’s streaming debut on Disney+ bundled along with other Marvel shows, lead actor Charlie Cox carried all three seasons of the show’s run on Netflix as “Daredevil” since its launch in 2015 until its cancellation in 2018. He also co-headlined its superhero ensemble spin-off, “The Defenders” all on Netflix, reprises the title role once more. The show’s legacy also […]
Provided that you’re not like me and you’ve been able to keep up with all things Marvel, you’re now at the latest milemarker with Sony signaling the fandom with director J.C. Chandor’s Kraven The Hunter starring Aaron Taylor Johnson and Russell Crowe. Kraven the Hunter is the visceral story about how and why one of Marvel’s most iconic villains came to be. Set before his notorious vendetta with Spider-Man, Aaron Taylor-Johnson stars as the titular character in the R-rated film. The film also stars Ariana DeBose, Fred Hechinger, Alessandro Nivola and Christopher Abbott. Sony is opening the film in March and now has a red-band trailer to help whet the appetite.
The future of Marvel is definitely female with Disney’s current streaming roster bolstering several female fronted shows to come including She-Hulk: Attorney At Law and Ms. Marvel, and Hawkeye spin-off Echo which is currently in production as of last week. Indigenous ASL actress Alaqua Cox is reprising her role and can be seen in a first look which debuted five days ago. Created by David Mack and Joe Quesada and having first appeared in Marvel Comics in 1999, Cox debuted the character in Hawkeye as a commander of the criminal outfit, the tracksuit mafia, opposite series leads Hayley Steinfeld and Jeremy Renner. As Marvel notes, “the origin story of Echo revisits Maya Lopez, whose ruthless behavior in New York City catches up with her in her hometown. She must face her past, reconnect with her Native American roots and embrace the meaning of family and community if she ever hopes […]
Following the announced removal of several Marvel/Disney shows from Netflix last month, Disney+ is affirming is committment to its line-up as of Tuesday, bringing “Daredevil”, “Jessica Jones”, “Luke Cage”, “Iron Fist”, “The Defenders” and “The Punisher” to its platform beginning March 16. The move also includes all seven seasons of “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” which initially enjoyed a seven-year run on ABC following its Fall 2013 premiere. The news also brings word of a change in operative use where all U.S. subscribers will be then prompted to set parental controls, using enhanced content ratings and PIN protection for all included profiles. “Those that choose to keep their settings the same will continue to enjoy Disney+ as they always have within a TV-14 content rating environment, with the option to make changes at any time under Profile settings.” says the streamer. The payload additionally tallies up the number of shows currently […]
This past weekend was huge in cultural events: the Super Bowl was played (and Tom Brady was not in it!), there was a hip-hoppin’ halftime show full of some of my favorite artists, and there was a healthy helping of geek culture served in the form of some awesome trailers. I am a geek and a sports fan so when my sporting events include my geek stuff like these trailers, I am super happy. In case you missed it, the following trailers dropped during the Super Bowl: The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power I absolutely love Middle Earth. If I could travel there, I would (or I will, since I have put New Zealand on my to travel list). I thoroughly enjoyed watching The Lord of the Rings trilogy in theaters on opening night and have since enjoyed multiple viewings of the extended versions. I even enjoyed […]
Undoubtedly one of the biggest factors of the hype behind actor Oscar Isaac’s move toward Marvel with upcoming series, Moon Knight, was a training video shown on social media at a gym somewhere in NYC during pre-production. It’s even more enticing now as we segue into a new chapter of the Marvel television and film universe with the unveiling of the teaser trailer and poster. Moon Knight is a new globetrotting action-adventure series featuring a complex vigilante who suffers from dissociative identity disorder. The multiple identities who live inside him find themselves thrust into a deadly war of the gods against the backdrop of modern and ancient Egypt. Moon Knight is directed by Mohamed Diab and will stream exclusively on Disney+ from March 30. Ethan Hawke, Gaspard Ulliel and May Calamawy also star.
Having conquered a global pandemic, the long-awaited production of Marvel’s Shang-Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings – since completed in December – now looks toward conquering the box office on September 3. And with that, we now have an official trailer and poster to help get the wheels spinning for the next phase of Marvel’s cinematic tapestry, and with none other than actor Simu Liu tentatively rebranding himself from buzzworthy sitcom talent into boundless superhero martial arts movie stardom. Marvel’s Shang-Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings is directed by Destin Daniel Cretton from a screenplay by Dave Callaham, and presents Liu with an origin starting point as seen in the teaser that introduces a bit of his backstory pertaining to our hero’s past in connection with the Ten Rings organization. The teaser also puts a heavy-handed spotlight on the film’s action sequences, assembled by an amazing […]
They say (and by “they” I mean the people who create all those memes passed around on social media) that when you are a child, you identify with the superheroes, but when you are an adult, you begin to understand the villains. While I cannot fully agree with this because even growing up there were villains I could empathize with, I do think there may be some truth to it since some villains are just so likable! A good example of this is Loki. Hear me out. If you have siblings, you all know that even though parents are not supposed to have favorites, they often treat their children differently. Loki was treated differently. How could you not rebel when growing up in anyone’s shadow, but especially Thor’s? Loki is a trickster and while he may go too far, was he ever really taught otherwise? Yes, he played a part […]
Ever since Natasha Romanoff graced the silver screen in 2010 in Iron Man 2 I have wanted to see more of Black Widow. I want to see more of her origins, more of her in action without having to clean up after Captain America or Iron Man, and please what happened in Budapest?! Scarlett Johanseen reprises her role as Black Widow when she finally gets her own film! Here’s the trailer: So what’s the story? While not much has been said about the actual plot, you can tell in the trailer that fans will get to see Black Widow’s non-Avengers family. And while this is her own movie, there are rumors that Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark may make an appearance. According to IMDB, Black Widow is “A film about Natasha Romanoff in her quests between the films Civil War and Infinity War.” Black Widow will be in theaters May […]
“Sometimes not even heroes can save themselves…” Such is the tagline for Netflix‘s third and final outing for Marvel’s Jessica Jones, which Netflix is teasing once more with a brand new behind-the-scene featurette with actress Krysten Ritter tackling directing duties this final season. Effectively season three also marks the last hoorah for all things Marvel on the streaming service following the cancellations of all of the other five shows in the past year, namely Daredevil, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, The Defenders and The Punisher. Marvel’s Jessica Jones had a lukewarm take off in 2015 with Ritter in the title role, playing a binge-drinking ex-superhero-cum-private investigator afflicted by tragedy and an a villainous ex-lover whose machinations would render her with severe psychological trauma for years. The show continued with high drama and action in 2018 with Jones bitterly reuniting with her mother amid fracturing her friendships with neighbor and former assistant, […]
With Marvel developing its post-Avengers saga, all eyes are now on what lies ahead for films like Black Panther 2, Black Widow, Shang-Chi and what may come of Disney+’s upcoming programming. This also goes for an adaptation of Jack Kirby’s 1976 comic, The Eternals with studio developments on-going as of last Spring and now with talk of Korean superstar Don Lee – a.k.a. Ma Dong-Seok, potentially joining the cast. Little is known about the plot or what role Ma is in talks to play but the film is said to center on the titular race of ancient human beings, created a million years ago by the cosmic entities known as the Celestials. As Umberto Gonzalez notes over at The Wrap, screenwriters Matthew and Ryan Firpo are penning the project which aims its focus on female Eternal, Sersi, the lead role for which actress Angelina Jolie is still in talks. Production […]
According to a new report at Deadline, James Gunn, is being brought back on board to direct Guardians Of The Galaxy: Vol. 3. The news comes less than a year after Gunn was fired by Disney when right-wing trolls unearthed old, offensive Tweets from Gunn’s past twitter activity late last summer. Mike Fleming Jr. reports the following: “After the firing, Walt Disney Studios president Alan Horn met with Gunn on multiple occasions to discuss the situation. Persuaded by Gunn’s public apology and his handling of the situation after, Horn decided to reverse course and reinstate Gunn.” Gunn’s Hall H appearance for last year’s Comic Con for the upcoming May 24 release on David Yarovesky’s Brightburn (on which Gunn serves as producer), was pulled upon the news of the tweets. His subsequent firing proved even more divisive with supporters, bloggers and fans alike, and even the cast – most notably Dave […]
UPDATE (4:33pm EST): Marvel responded to fan backlash on Thursday by releasing an amended official poster for Avengers: Endgame, this time adding actress Danai Gurira’s name to the roster. The film marks Gurira’s third Marvel MCU appearance following Black Panther and Avengers: Infinity War, recurring in the role of Okoye, a member of Wakanda’s elite special forces unit, the Dora Milaje. EARLIER: Captain Marvel is making the rounds in theaters by now and on that note, the latest trailer for Avengers: Endgame is now online ahead of its April 26 release. The Russo Brothers are at the helm for what looks to be the last chapter for this particular canon of the MCU with Brie Larson’s own superhero stint connecting its own share of dots to weave the Marvel movie tapestry some. The trailer definitely reveals a bit from last year’s Infinity War so if you haven’t seen it yet […]
Following Deadline’s news in December, the latest update for Marvel Studios’ Shang-Chi brings word that Daniel Deston Cretton (The Glass Castle) will take the helm for a modernized adaptation of the Marvel property. Currently shepherding upcoming Michael B. Jordan’s Just Mercy, Cretton will be joined by Expendables franchise creator Dave Callaham (The Expendables franchise, upcoming Wonder Woman 1984 and Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse 2). In the comics, Shang-Chi is the son of China-based globalist who raised and educated his progeny in his reclusive China compound, closed off to the outside world. The son trained in the martial arts and developed unsurpassed skills. He is eventually introduced to the outside world to do his father’s bidding, and then has to come to grips with the fact his revered father might not be the humanitarian he has claimed to be and is closer to what others call him: The Devil’s Doctor. He […]
The last five years have been an extraordinary thrill for us with stunt multi-hyphenate James Young being one of the biggest that Film Combat Syndicate covered in this site’s young life, and much credit goes out to Darren Bailey for being pivotal in engineering that for us for a 2014 sit-down with Young and fellow Marvel MCU cohort, Film Combat Syndicate favorite Aaron Toney. There’ll be plenty of ground to cover going forward as the higher ups at Marvel Entertainment and Disney plot what’ll happen next with the approach of Avengers: Endgame, which Young goes into at the top of his latest interview with Travis Wong for the newest episode of Wong’s JAMCast. Wong, also a stunt professional, hails from the same base of operations over at Reseda’s Joining All Movement. The Joining All Movement #JAMCast is a weekly podcast hosted by Travis Wong, interviewing influential figures in the movement […]
While the fate of Netflix series, The Punisher, remains to be seen, the official January 18 premiere date is already set in stone as is the riveting performance now etched in Marvel history by title actor Jon Bernthal. Following the events of the first season in 2017, our stoic ex-marine and outlaw continues to battle enemies on several fronts, now turning his attention to an alt-right Christian fundementalist, as well as an old friend-turned enemy battling the precipice of his own cracked psyche. There were some folks who complained about the first season being too slow. I’m not one to nitpick here about the first season myself as much as I felt the brooding, often slow burn was much more palpable and sustenant than in most of the other now-called Marvel shows. Thus, I totally got the feel of it, and the intended tonal vision and aesthetic by showrunner Steve […]
