Soi Cheang will direct Kowloon Walled City, an adaptation of the popular 2010 cult manhwa, “City Of Darkness”, from creators Andy Seto and “Yuyi”. As Screen‘s own Liz Shackleton reports that actors Max Zhang (The Brink), Louis Koo (Paradox) and Richie Jen (Bodies At Rest) will star in the film which is “set in the 1980s inside Hong Kong’s infamous walled city, which was demolished in 1993”; According to 88Bar‘s Jason Li in a 2018 review of the property, the initial story “…chronicles the fall and rise of prominent gangster and martial artist 陳洛軍 (“Lok”) as he goes into hiding in the Kowloon Walled City after a bitter fight with his former boss.” Wilson Yip (Ip Man franchise, Flashpoint SPL, Dragon Tiger Gate) is producing the film next to Media Asia’s John Chong, who was hands-on during last week’s virtual EFM, with Kowloon Walled City as one of multiple titles […]

I gotta say, the newest official trailer Fruit Chan’s The Invicible Dragon looks tons of fun as we get more and more footage of story, drama, and featured talents Max Zhang and Anderson Silva trying to beat each other to a pulp. The least I expected was for this latest push to include an actual CG dragon as much as we all thought the tattoo on Zhang’s back was all there was to the “dragon” element of the story. Nope. Not even close apparently. If it feels a bit spoilery for you then there’s no turning back. Pretty plot-twisty in my view, though I’m curious to see how this affects the film from start to finish with Zhang playing an undercover operative whose escapades in aiding the police bring him not only continous troubles, but a spate of killings, and an impending confrontation with a man from his past. The […]
Indeed, you’re not alone if you feel like Fruit Chan’s The Invincible Dragon should have been in theaters by now. It’s been two years since the campaign began with a teaser and a prolonged wait period that now sees light at the end of the tunnel with a June 20 rollout in Hong Kong. We also have an officially dated trailer and a raft of behind-the-scenes featurettes, as well as stills from the upcoming thriller. This one sees Max Zhang headlining the story of Kowloon, an undercover agent – a legend known for assisting police in solving cases – whose actions put him in the turrets of a Macau detective, and an American ex-soldier with a secret connection to his background, played by former UFC middleweight champion, Anderson Silva. Featuring fight and stunt direction from Jackie Chan cohort Stephen Tung, can be seen in the following featurettes in addition to […]
The past week or so saw fans hastily taking heed to a leaked European trailer for John Herzfeld’s Escape Plan: The Extractors. It was a fun few minutes but it was worth at least waiting for the official U.S. trailer to arrive, with an official date set for July 2 on Digital 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, DVD, and Digital. Screen legend Sylvester Stallone kicks this explosive action tale into high gear. After security expert Ray Breslin (Stallone) is hired to rescue the kidnapped daughter of a Hong Kong tech mogul from a formidable Latvian prison, Breslin’s girlfriend (Jaime King) is also captured. Now he and his team, which includes Dave Bautista and Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson, must pull off a deadly rescue mission to confront their sadistic foe and save the hostages before time runs out. Five years in and a franchise that surprisingly carried over well for fans, Escape […]
A sequel to Yuen Woo-Ping’s Master Z: Ip Man Legacy, is reportedly in the works according to the latest observations of the operator of Twitter handle, @AsianFilmStrike. Supposedly, the sequel’s budget will be substantially less than half that of the first film which stood at around $28 million; The film’s current global box office gross stands around $20 million according to Box Office Mojo. Also featuring Michelle Yeoh and co-star/exec producer Dave Bautista with guest star Tony Jaa, Master Z: Ip Man Legacy headlines actor Max Zhang in spin-off capacity following up his pivotal character opposite Donnie Yen in the Wilson Yip’s thrice-over hit folkloric franchise take on iconic Wing Chun grandmaster, Ip Man, which is soon due for a fourth outing in July. Zhang will reportedly reprise the title Master Z role while it is yet be confirmed if Yuen will return to the helm. Zhang will soon return […]
The past few years have been a waiting game as award-winning director Fruit Chan forged further onto projects like Anthony Wong drama, Still Human, and sex comedy, Three Husbands. All while this is happening, his latest thriller, The Invincible Dragon, remained frozen in time with nil info on its release and now it appears fans of actor and martial arts star Max Zhang (Master Z) will finally see some movement on this end come its Chinese release on April 30. Once upon a time, the undercover agent with dragon tattoo Kowloon, continually helped the police to solve mysterious cases, which made him known as a rising star. However, his impulsive personality dragged him into endless troubles. He got himself into fights with the Macau detective, as well as an American Army veteran Alexander who has a secret linkage to Kowloon’s background… World sales agents at Pegasus have already since secured […]
Director Yuen Woo-ping takes the mantle for actor and martial artist Max Zhang’s latest solo feat, Master Z: The Ip Man Legacy, a fresh and livening underdog tale spun-off from the current Ip Man trilogy long prior to the fourth film’s release this summer. Zhang has made some great strides in the last few years, including at least a few Hollywood credits to his belt – this, after proving formidably as a major seller to fans of the genre long since stunt-doubling Zhang Ziyi on the set of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. Fans of the Ip Man franchise won’t feel too left out as Yuen’s spin-off assures with the occssional flashback here and there to cosign the new venture that otherwise expands the commercial Ip Man cinematic universe. Hong Kong is where our story is set, still under British rule, and a system of government that’s become inherently corrupt. Following […]
