MMA fans the world over all know about that one time Michael Bisping lost eyesight in one eye, and it being one of the most pivotal moments in sportfighting history. It may also come as a surprise to anyone who’s only ever known him through mild sport chatter in the years leading up to his film career in movies like xXx: The Return Of Xander Cage, Triple Threat, Den Of Thieves, TV drama “Warrior” and Never Back Down: Revolt to name a few, and so here to break the ice is the man himself in Michael Hamilton’s newest documentary, Bisping. Uncover the life and incredible career of British UFC legend and former Middleweight Champion, Michael Bisping, in this compelling feature documentary. When fan-favourite Bisping lost vision in one eye during a controversial fight, survival mode kicked in. As his loving wife and children pleaded for the battered and bruised fighter […]
Retired MMA champion Michael Bisping’s film career is taking the next step following starring credits in Den Of Thieves, Triple Threat and xXx: The Return Of Xander Cage. Dax Phelan will set sail for the UK to direct The Journeyman, based on author Mark Turley’s novel, “Journeymen: The Other Side of the Boxing Business, a New Perspective on the Noble Art”. Phelan and Turley both adapted the screenplay. Deadline’s Tom Grater reports: “Bisping will play Kenny ‘The Beast’ Breen, an alcoholic, drug-abusing, past-his-prime journeyman boxer with a record of 11-85-0 who, after being diagnosed with neurological damage, continues his career on the small-hall circuit at grave risk to himself.” LHCo Distribution Liaison will be hosting the project for this month’s virtual AFM to find a UK producing partner. Phelan will produce with Eric M. Klein, with Bisping and Turley exec producing, and with real-life journeyman boxer Johnny Greaves serving as […]
In the opening scene of Jesse V. Johnson’s film, TRIPLE THREAT, Payu (Tony Jaa) and Jaka (Iko Uwais) meet in a Maha Juyan jungle setting during a high stakes rescue mission. They fight briefly amid the chaos of gunfire, each of them instantly delivering a whirlwind volley of homespun moves from their respective catalogues – these familiar to anyone that has followed their separate, impressive oeuvre. And though that initial fight ends briefly, it’s exclamation a bomb detonation that interrupts the melee, the scene still plays to the sort of wish fulfillment that lies at the foundation of many a speculative debate among fans of the martial arts genre. In this way Triple Threat’s premise is a promise, and the rest of its runtime delivers in generous servings. The jungle sequence is the catalyst, introducing us to many of the stars (Michael Jai White, Tony Jaa, Tiger Chen, Michael Bisping, […]
There’s no real shortage of action movies in the industry. The rarity, however, lies in seeing so many talented household names under one banner (save for The Expendables franchise of late) in a film like Jesse V. Johnson’s newest ensemble gathering, Triple Threat. The film presents a familiar, albeit intriguing, classic betrayal/revenge story that dares to do what Hollywood thusfar won’t do; Granted, piting together the likes of martial arts action cinema favorites like Tony Jaa, Tiger Chen, Iko Uwais, Scott Adkins, Michael Jai White, and Jeeja Yanin doesn’t deem as lucrative in a market saturated by superhero movies coming out of its orifices. Still, you can’t deny that a marquee like this isn’t mouthwatering, if only for the fact that once upon a time, a film like this would have seen a nationwide release as big as James Cameron’s True Lies or John McTiernan’s The Predator. A one-night only […]
For some of us, the last two years have been an eternity with the planned release of forthcoming ensemble actioner, Triple Threat. This one in particular is one in a bundle of productions that have jam-packed The Beautiful Ones director Jesse V. Johnson’s schedule since he resurfaced with his Pit Fighter co-star, Scott Adkins, for a quintet of projects to date beginning with Savage Dog in 2017. With Adkins’ Avengement still in the pipeline as well as Dominique Vandenberg starrer Legion Maxx over at Evolutionary Films, Triple Threat, long since its stasis as “Makeshift Squad”, can finally pick up some steam with the official trailer, and a wide one-night release March 19, and a select theatrical and VOD rollout on March 22. A hit contract is taken out on a billionaires daughter intent on bringing down a major crime syndicate. A down and out team of mercenaries must take on […]
July was a great month to be a martial arts fan with all the excuse in the world to repeat-watch the comic-con teaser trailer for the new martial arts thriller, Triple Threat. Of course, critical results are pending but the trailer ponies up everything you could want in a movie of its genre with Tony Jaa, Iko Uwais and Tiger Chen leading the cast and Savage Dog helmer Jesse V. Johnson directing. The movie opens in 2018 with plans for a sequel already underway and Well Go USA has already snagged first dibs on the upcoming ensemble action pic. That leaves off a number of territories to be accounted for which brings us to Screendaily‘s exclusive on Monday for the U.S. based company to release the film in the U.K. and Australia as well, in addition to the following locations: Germany (Koch), Latin America (Swen), Italy (Movies Inspired), Portugal (Cinemundo), […]
I could go on and on until I’m blue in the face about how excited I am for the new action thriller, Triple Threat. I won’t, but I will throw my hat in with some words for seasoned stuntman and filmmaker Jesse V. Johnson who, in the wake of a stagnant directing career salvaged by the appeal drawn from his latest release, Savage Dog, has risen above expectations in opportune fashion. It truly is something to be proud of… a succession accompanied, no less, by a line-up of some serious, prominent action starpower; Names like Tony Jaa, Iko Uwais and Tiger Chen as well as Scott Adkins, Michael Jai White, Michael Bisping and Jeeja Yanin are all but what one would dream of seeing in a single movie together on the big screen, which, at least until starting late last year, almost felt like an impossibility. Then again, there were […]
Director Ron Scalpello’s new movie takes you into the world of underground boxing in the eyes of London’s once-living most notorious hard man in the new film, My Name Is Lenny. A quick lookup drew me to some interesting facts about plans for this particular film centered on the life and times of street fighter Lenny McLean which otherwise now has actor Josh Helman (Mad Max: Fury Road, X-Men: Apocalypse), fully immersed and in character. Explosive and brutal, My Name Is Lenny is based on the true story of Britain’s most notorious bareknuckle fighter: Lenny McLean (Josh Helman, Mad Max: Fury Road). A known associate of The Krays, Charles Bronson and Ronnie Biggs, Lenny was an East End icon, bouncer and enforcer at the centre of the unlicensed boxing world. Welcome to the no-holds-barred epic portrayal of his life, from a troubled and violent childhood to his early fighting years, […]
EXCLUSIVE: In the months since its evolution, the highly anticipated action thriller, Triple Threat (formely Makeshift Squad) has been a bookmark for many an Asian cinema fan looking to see just how this particular “Asian-Expendables” kind of movie this will bring about. The prospects have been good, too, and notably in the wake of its casting additions including headliners Tiger Chen (Man Of Tai Chi), Tony Jaa (Furious Seven) and Iko Uwais (Headshot), and particularly with 87eleven’s own Chad Stahelski (John Wick: Chapter 2) behind the action scenes. Bearing all this in mind, an attached director has not been entirely certain with earlier names Gary Mak and Wang Xiaolie having circled the project, the latter reported by the time of its acquisition over at international sales outfit Arclight Films late last year. Moreover, with Stahelski poised to move forward with a hopeful third installment of the hit John Wick franchise […]
Actor Vin Diesel took to Facebook Live for the official launch of the third trailer for the upcoming release of xXx: The Return Of Xander Cage. With Conor McGregor now out of the current production of xXx: The Return Of Xander Cage, it’ll be UFC Middleweight Michael Bisping entering the Xander Zone for its January 20, 2017 release from Paramount. The film, directed by D.J. Caruso, isn’t Bisping’s first stake in film either, having aleady done several acting gigs in the last six years, including Hollywood stunt coordinator Mike Gunther’s feature film directing debut, Beatdown, as well as Noel Clarke’s sci-fi actioner, The Anomaly, and the hit Cinemax series, Strike Back. The news also marks the latest in developments for the film which is still in production starring returning actor Vin Diesel before seuging into Fast 8 for helmer F. Gary Gray. Bisping will be joined by a good crop of select screen heavy-hitters including Tony Jaa and Donnie Yen, as well as actresses Deepika Padukone, Ruby Rose and Nina Dobrev, and returning actor Samuel L. […]
Sullivan Stapleton (left) and Phillip Winchester (right) in STRIKE BACK I don’t watch a lot of television, but I love a good action series, and with Cinemax in my sights, Strike Back has always been a favorite. The show is on the way with its fourth and final season with filming resuming in Europe following a six-month hiatus due to an unspecified off-set injury back in February for series regular Sullivan Stapleton that forced the season behind its original shooting schedule. Well, with the season set to launch next year, it may or may not have already been planned, but a new report from Deadline is confirming a meaty cast of new faces to end the show on a high note. The Wolverine co-star, actor Will Yun Lee is on board for what is only being described as a villainous role as a member of the North Korean State Security […]
