A Live-Action COWBOY BEBOP Adaptation Is Coming To Television

Well it’s not the live-action feature film that’s been long rumored since the early two-thousandsies, but for what its worth a television push may be feasible for fans ardent of the highly popular manga and anime, Cowboy Bebop. Trade news sources have confirmed such a series now in the works to adapt the property for the small screen.

Sunrise Inc., the studio behind Watanabe Shinichiro’s 1998 anime advancement of Kuga Cain’s Kadokawa Shoten manga is executive producing the series which tells of the adventures and misadventures of 21st century intergalactic bounty hunter Spike Spiegel and his ragtag team of bounty hunters. Also on board are Tomorrow Studios’s Marty Adelstein and Becky Clements and Matthew Weinberg, and Midnight Radio quartet Josh Appelbaum, Andre Nemec, Jeff Pinkner, and Scott Rosenberg. Thor: Ragnarok scribe Chris Yost is penning the adaptation.

“We are excited to work with Sunrise in bringing this beloved anime to the U.S. and global marketplace as a live-action series,” said Adelstein. “The animated version has long resonated with audiences worldwide, and with the continued, ever growing, popularity of anime, we believe a live action version will have an incredible impact today.”

I’m actually in the middle of the 26-episode anime myself but there’ll be plenty of time to catch up between now and the show’s flourishing. In the meantime, as much as I look forward the series, I also hope the casting will assure viewers and critics alike regarding Asian casting representation, especially with Oka Masi’s trainwreck in lieu of the new Death Note film…

…Yeah, we needn’t go there again. (Deadline)
