IFC Midnight and AGC Studios are ready to ramp up efforts to push writer/director Neill Blomkamp’s newest thriller, Demonic. The pandemic-shot horror was acquired by IFC Midnight last month and marks the latest studious effort from the man behind sci-fi wonders District 9, Elysium and Chappie, and even a Robocop or Alien film if the genre cinema powers that be actually willed it. Production is expected to commence early next year for Inferno, Neill Blomkamp’s new sci-fi thriller for AGC Studios. American Assassin, Waco and upcoming 21 Bridges actor Taylor Kitsch will play as a New Mexico cop enveloped into the unknown when his family is kidnapped by a humanoid beast hellbent on killing the witness to a seemingly ordinary murder in the desert. “I am very excited to be getting behind the camera and making ‘Inferno’ with AGC. The film is filled with themes and concepts that I find deeply fascinating, I feel lucky to be shooting it,” Blomkamp said in a statement. It was back in January that Zeitgeist Magazine provided exclusive word from Ed Neumeier that a “continuation” of Orion’s original 1987 sci-fi action satire franchise vehicle, RoboCop, was in development. Fast forward seven months later and now it seems the aforementioned co-writer and producer of the initial Peter Weller-starrer is sticking to his word with further development now publicly attaching Neill Blomkamp to the upcoming revival, RoboCop Returns. Anarchy reigns and the fate of Detroit hangs in the balance as RoboCop makes his triumphant return to fight crime and corruption. While filmmaker Neill Blomkamp may be further from seeing his vision for 20th Century Fox’s Alien franchise, he’s no less been keeping himself pretty busy. The Escape shortfilm was a blast last Fall and now with a premiere date in the works for gaming platform, Steam, a brand new project is well on the way in a series of experimental shortfilms and judging by the first trailer itself, it appears he’s off to a spectacular start. It was back in college that I became keen on what BMWFilms was achieving with its spate of shortfilms at the time in 2002. There were eight films dubbed The Hire, and with my most favorite being John Woo’s “Hostage” as much as I am a fan of The Woo. The series itself essentially led me to my appreciation for actor Clive Owen, star of the fantastic 2007 action hit, Shoot ‘Em Up, about a mysterious carrot-eating marksman who finds himself at the beckoncall of a hooker and her baby when they become the target of a seedy squad of mercenaries working for corrupt politicians and the gun manufacturers funding them. It wasn’t too long ago that Irish filmmaker Ruairí Robinson impressed the hell out of the internet with The Leviathan, an original short conceptual sci-fi video with fitting nods to Moby Dick, set in the 22nd century where mankind has colonized many worlds and supraluminal travel is made possible by harvesting exotic matter from eggs of large creatures. It’s been scoring points since making the rounds earlier this month and fans and critics have been advocating in support of Robinson and his contribution to the genre as an independent piece completed thanks in part to financing from the Irish Film Board and a jestful moment with Fight Club (1999) and Jumper (2008) scribe Jim Uhls which evidently spawned the creativity we now see in the video. In this case, we veer over to the viral artwork of District 9 and Elysium helmer Neill Blomkamp whose conceptual pieces have been making the rounds for sometime now with reference to the once short-lived prospects of an Alien sequel. The original franchise launched by director Ridley Scott in 1979. Starring actress Sigourney Weaver, the film spawned massive cult acclaim among sci-fi geeks, as well as a four-film series in addition to two vs. Preadator-crossover films between 2004 and 2007 before Scott took the helm for the 2012 release of Prometheus, attempting to establish an origin telling in the process. Moreover, the very addition of actor Sharlto Copley in the title role serves as a credit to the strengths shared between him and Blomkamp in their long friendship and partnership in film, and it shows in the recognition they’ve continually received in District 9 and Elysium just over a year ago.
