NYCC 2016: New Trailers Go Live For UNDERWORLD: BLOOD WARS And RESIDENT EVIL: THE FINAL CHAPTER
Leaving no stone unturned, Sony Pictures kept its word on Friday with panels for its dual package of female-centric action and spectacle features, Underworld: Blood Wars and Resident Evil: The Final Chapter. Personally, I’ve yet to catch up on some of the films in both franchises – I think I’m short on seeing the previous Resident Evil film and I still only ever saw the first and third Underworld movies.
So…yeah. Both of these trailers feel like a ton of ass kicking in-excess. Nontheless I’m pretty sure these titles are officially selling themselves at this point, and regardless as to why some critics may view these films as unnecessary. For me, the sore thumb that sticks out the most is the RE franchise which looks more and more like a re-hashing of stunt sequences on repeat with nods at jewels from other films. I’ve never even played the games so I can’t give any criticisms of my own to compare to those who have and concur with the notion that these films are pretty nonsensical. Spectacular as a Hollywood film franchise ought to be, but still… pretty nonsensical. Mediocre, even.
And then you have Underworld, which does have its redeeming moments at times, but let’s face it. The first film clearly rode on the coat tails of the first Blade film with elements and themes such as war, vampires, action and horror, slick costuming and gun tech. And it just continued from there, I suppose, but at any rate, hopefully these films will be the last we see of these. Sony presented the latest official trailers to both films in the weeks since their earlier teasers began airing. Take a look below, and mark the dates as you may!
Underworld: Blood Wars follows Vampire death dealer, Selene (Kate Beckinsale), as she fends off brutal attacks from both the Lycan clan and the Vampire faction that betrayed her. With her only allies, David (Theo James) and his father Thomas (Charles Dance), she must stop the eternal war between Lycans and Vampires, even if it means she has to make the ultimate sacrifice. The movie opens nationwide on January 6, 2017. The film was directed by Anna Foerster, screenplay by Cory Goodman and Jayson Rothwell, story by Cory Goodman, and based on characters by Kevin Grevioux and Len Wiseman & Danny McBride.
In Resident Evil: The Final Chapter, Alice (Milla Jovovich) is the only survivor of what was meant to be humanity’s final stand against the undead. Now, she must return to where the nightmare began – The Hive in Raccoon City, where the Umbrella Corporation is gathering its forces for a final strike against the only remaining survivors of the apocalypse. The film was written and directed by Paul W.S. Anderson. It opens nationwide on January 27, 2017.
