It’s an event buried in the annals if history and not all that familiar if you’re not the most keen on world history, and it serves all the more interesting as far as storytelling templates go with actor and filmmaker Pascal Aka’s latest, Gold Coast Lounge. The typical upheaval that comes with the changing of times is on blaring display here, along with the film’s titular bar and lounge right in the heart of the city of Accra. Ghanan filmmaker Pascal Aka (Evol, shortfilm Redemption, Interception) has been on my radar for a while since I learned of his award-winning feats from 8th Wonder Stunts and his Breakthrough Studios banner. The once Canada-based director who has long since been building his craft for West Africa’s Ghanan audience is now returning with his latest effort, Gold Coast Lounge. The film stars Alphonse Menyo, Adjetey Anang, Raquel Ammah, Zynnell Zuh, Pascal Aka, Cina Soul Akofa Edjeani, Gideon Boakye. An afro-noir film, set in the nightlife of post-independent Ghana. A crime family have to unite, and clean up their act before the government shuts down their lucrative lounge. For a while now I’ve had my eye off-and-on the Ivory Coast’s own Pascal Aka, multi-faceted actor and director in Africa who’s done quite a bit of work on several projects. One thing is especially certain in my attention here, and it’s that he’s got his feet well into shooting action sequences while continually sharpening his craft. That stated, the latest teaser for his next feature, Interception starring John Dumelo, delivers some notable and striking tones for the kind of film it intends to be judging by the limited imagery: tactical armed drama with intense action simpler terms to say the least. It looks like a quality picture so far, so I’m intrigued.
