It often seems the case at times with a lot of action fan sites that everything made within the genre nearly always gets the kind of breathless reception and coverage that filmmakers aspire for. Indeed, invariably, not every filmmaker deserves it, and certainly there are a few directors whose works I’ve covered in the past who’ve gotten off with a curve, if not simply for the fact that filmmaking – especially action movies – is hard as shit. The rehearsals. The training and constant rigmarole of physical upkeep. Budgeting and overruns. Scheduling. Equipment. Location scouting and securing. All the intricacies that filmmakers generally face are certainly things you can imagine may be even more difficult for folks working the independent film scene, banking on the inspiration they share for their craft and much ado with simply learning-by-doing process of it all. The good news, of course, is if you do […]
Even during a crippling pandemic, actor and producer Beau Fowler (Avengement, Blood, Sweat & Terrors: Express Delivery) is already on hand for the festival scene this year as he continues to push his latest short, Red, which now comes with a first teaser just above. Fowler reunites with stunt professional-turned-filmmaker David Newton (The Take Down) for the project which recently earned a nomination for Best Stunts at the fifth Birmingham Film Festival, and is also a current finalist for Best Picture at New York Film Festival. Billed as a proof-of-concept action short for a hopeful feature thriller, Red hails from Ki Films and centers on Fowler in the role of “an ex-soldier who awakes in a bath of ice, and missing a kidney. Piecing together the desperate choices he made to locate his daughter an organ match, he must now fight for survival within the red market harvesting den he’s […]
This month we were able to discuss the latest reveal for Red, a new concept from actor Beau Fowler and director David Newton. For this, the Coronavirus pandemic that’s currently gripped the world and put the film industry at large at a standstill is just one of the segues Fowler and I observe in our latest Q&A. Click here for the earlier coverage on Red, and enjoy the read below! Beau, it’s great to get in touch with you now about your work. How are you coping with things since the lockdown in your country? I can especially imagine it’s had an impact on the film industry next to just normal everyday life. Yeah, it’s pretty crazy. Tough not being able to go out and do the simple things. Though to be honest I’m still self-taping for projects, and I’m quite used to spending days in development wondering when my […]
Actor Beau Fowler is still in the mix these days, just completed his newest short film proof of concept, Red (working title, subject to change) last weekend from Ki Films. The actor took to social media last week on Thursday to tease fans with a mystery image, revealing himself opposite actress Jennifer Lim (A Monster Calls) in an intense scene. Fowler wrote the proof late last year and began a collaborative development soon with filmmaker David Newton (Wrath Of God, The Last), constructing a short story to serve as preamble to a hopeful feature-length endeavor later down the line. Plot details are underwraps though, but I am told the project is described as “an emotionally driven action thriller set in the world of organ harvesting”. Red rejoins Fowler with Newton, himself an industry stunt performer, independent filmmaker who made the festival rounds in 2018 with his feature debut, Amber – […]
NBC still very much has a slate of exciting new TV shows for viewers to look forward to, and as it turns out, they’re not done yet. The 2003-published graphic novel, Red, created by Warren Ellis and Cully Hamner, became a surprise hit with director Robert Schwentke’s 2010 live-action adaptation prior to helmer Dean Parisot’s sequel in 2013, each focusing on the story of retired government agents who become targets by the CIA. That said, it appears NBC has snagged an opportunity to develop further iterations of DC Comics’s Homage publication into a pilot for an hour-long series to be produced by Lionsgate TV and DiBonaventura Pictures Television. Jon and Erich Hoeber, who wrote both films, and Mark Vahradian who also produced the films, executice producing the new series which Deadline states will sustain itself around the core concept of the graphic novel as seen in the films, but approach […]
I’ve pretty much spent the past two years I’ve been blogging as Film Combat Syndicate, in part, musing about the Fast And Furious franchise. No, my fixation wasn’t immediate upon the first film in 2002 – it only became so in the months leading up to this article I wrote in 2013, and to say the least, I stand by my fandom. That said, I love just how much diversity has gone into this cast and the immense scope this story has taken, from the streets of L.A. and Miami to Tokyo, Mexico, Rio and London, and a variety of talented actors and surprising new faces adding to the mix. Who would have thought that the likes of Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Djimon Hounsou, or even Gina Carano or Jason-frickin-Statham would find their way into the franchise. It’s unbelievable, but the potential here is quite obvious even as we embark […]
Following a sharp rise in book sales for author Veronica Roth’s 2011 YA publication of Divergent in light of Lionsgate’s boosted earnings from the 2013 theatrical release of The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, the studio has been busy fast tracking their new soon-to-be hit trilogy franchise with Divergent stars, actress Shailene Woodley and actor Theo James tapped to reprise their roles in the May production of the upcoming sequel, Insurgent, while searching for a director. That search ended recently with reports this week stating that Red helmer Robert Schwentke is boarding the project which is set to begin principal photography for its March 20, 2015 release, with a script by Akiva Goldsman from a draft by Brian Duffield. Schwentke‘s announcement essentially replaces Divergent director Neil Burger who has been busy with post-production for his film, which is set to bow in IMAX and theaters on March 21, 2014. Details on […]
