EXCLUSIVE: The last two years saw the quiet development of Monster Hunter from Resident Evil franchise duo Paul W.S. Anderson and producing partner Jeremy Bolt. The adaptation of the hit 2004 video game IP is now finally taking shape with word that actor and martial artist Tony Jaa will play The Hunter, joining the casting line-up announced earlier this evening at The Hollywood Reporter.
So the script is present… now all we need to know is who else will be boarding the project on either side of the camera. Even more importantly is who will step up to direct the film, and hopefully it will be someone sound of mind when it comes to filming action. At any rate, the appeal is definitely present on this one. (Deadline)
Golden Globe winning actress Taraji P. Henson (TV series Empire, Hidden Figures, Curious Case of Benjamin Button) is ready to increase the bodycount following her addition to the new action thriller, Proud Mary, back in January. Screen Gems has officially announced the film with cameras rolling on Thursday seating London Has Fallen helmer Babak Najafi in the director’s chair, and filming locations slated for Boston and surrounding Massachusetts cities through May.
John Stuart Newman (Dirty Work) and Christian Swegal (Stasis) provided the screenplay which has Henson adding an indelible portrayal as the fierce and beautiful Mary – a hit woman working for an organized crime family in Boston, whose life is completely turned around when she meets a young boy whose path she crosses when a professional hit goes bad. Further casting by Nancy Nayor enlists Jahi Di’Allo Winston (Feed The Beast) as Danny, a streetwise kid unaware of what prompts Mary to come to his aid, while actor Danny Glover (Lethal Weapon) will plays Mary’s fatherly but brutally unforgiving boss, Benny whose son, hitman and Mary’s former romantic partner, Tom, will be played by Billy Brown.
Also starring are Neal McDonough (Captain America: The First Avenger) whose role is described as a well-manicured killer primed to be sacrificed to maintain peace. Actress Margaret Avery (The Color Purple) is set to star as Benny’s wise and refined wife while Xander Berkeley (The Mentalist) will oversee the role of the drug-dealing sadist Mary eradicates, provoking an all-out turf war.
Producing are Paul Schiff and Tai Duncan with Taraji P. Henson and Glenn S. Gainor executive producing and Andrea Ajemian is co-producing. John Wick: Chapter Two director of photography Dan Laustsen will lens the pic with Carl Sprague (Infinitely Polar Bear) serving as production designer. Evan Schiff (Southside With You) will edit the film with costume design by Deborah Newhall (Cadaver).
Proud Mary will release nationwide in January 2018.
