If you’ve been keeping up the last several months with all things Sheldon Lettich, chances are that at least one update you’ve caught onto was the premiere of Firefight, the 1986 war film directed by Lettich and released nearly 40 years since its production. Lettich is a celebrated mainstay in 90s action cinema with writing and directing credits responsible for bolstering stars like Jean-Claude Van Damme, Mark Dacascos and Daniel Bernhardt, and it’s on that note that our own Vance Ang gets to relieve his enthusiasm and energy in a recent one-on-one with Lettich about the short, its production, and its history leading up to its release. Enjoy the interview and tap here to read Ang’s review!
This movie critic must preface this review with a brief historical comment, that this long dormant short film written and directed by cinema great Sheldon Lettich was shot in 1983 and finished in 1986. It’s been well over three decades and finally, his vision of war has been carefully reconstructed for release – and this movie critic was one of the very first people to watch and critically assess it. FIREFIGHT (1986) stands at just over 16 minutes in duration, where we are treated to a very bleak war time scenario with a tired voiceover denoting the perilous circumstances faced by his platoon. Joe Turano sings the sombre ‘Good Christian Soldier’ further adding to the dour tone of the film. The premise is simple and direct. A rescue mission goes awry on a Vietnamese hilltop, with a squad of marines besieged by Viet Cong forces. Though whilst the acting may […]
Director Sheldon Lettich confirmed his involvement with action thriller, Fight Pride, in a recent string of interview clips with Viking Samurai channel host, David Kurzhal, on YouTube. Lettich noted that development started when a group of people he’d never worked with before contacted him. “It’s sort of in the vein of Lionheart, so you can see why want me to direct it,” Lettich told Kurzhal, citing the script’s 80s/90s vibe. “It’s a good script,” Lettich continued, adding further news that he is currently circling a cast roster that includes Daniel Stisen (Last Man Down), Michael Paré (South Of Heaven) and Randy Couture (The Hard Way). Penned by Erik V. Wolter, Fight Pride is billed as a drama that takes its cues from Eugene O’Neill’s classic stage play, “The Hairy Ape”. The story centers on Yank, and takes you on “a dramatic, character driven journey of self-discovery of a societal outcast […]
I found myself on a bit of a Jean-Caude Van Damme kick on Tuesday morning what with all I had to blurt out as a guest writer over at The Action Elite. Alas, far be it for me to fall asleep on this latest bit anymore than I already have with the Belgian action star’s latest home entertainment outing courtesy of MVD Rewind Collection with Sheldon Lettich’s 1991 hit, Double Impact. MVD is debuting the action classic for the first time on Special Edition Blu-ray with loads of bonus features to make this one a special package for action fans. Lettich (Lionheart, Bloodsport, Max) directed from his own script the story of two very differing twin brothers, torn apart by tragedy and reunited years later to seek vengeance for their parents’ death…if they don’t kill each other first. Double Impact, which also stars Geoffrey Lewis and Alonna Shaw, accrued up […]
It’s been a while since MVD announced Sheldon Lettich’s Double Impact to their growing ‘Rewind Collection’. The distro banner has been quiet from time to time as the rollout got a bit complicated with certian legalities involved, but is now back and fully elucidating the film’s preparation for its tentative May 28 Collector’s Edition release on Blu-Ray. “Due to certain rights and clearance issues, we were not able to include these rough cuts.” the company said in a statement referencing announcements last year in hopes of presenting two alternative cuts. “We were, however, permitted to excise the never before seen footage in these cuts and bring you close to an hour of deleted and extended scenes. I would have loved to have had the option to show these cuts but clearance issues prevented us from including them. Either way, I’m thrilled that we still have the opportunity to share these […]

His career will always be an enduring staple for action fans and with MVD Entertainment Group, the gusto is all the same with at least two of their forthcoming MVD Rewind Collection releases, firstly with #3 – Black Eagle in a two-disc Blu-ray + DVD Special Edition combo pack coming February 27, 2018. The latter sits at #8 with Sheldon Lettich’s Hard Times remake, Lionheart, also in two-disc Blu-ray + DVD Special Edition combo pack on June 12, 2018 and containing all-new exclusive material, including a newly commissioned interview with the star himself. This one baffles the mind a bit as of late with fan interest currently piqued for a sequel and one only wonders when the wheels will finally start turning. Read […]
