“Two branches. One tree.” That’s the tagline being touted for Karate Kid: Legends, the newest chapter in the ongoing Karate Kid franchise which still has one more season of Netflix series Cobra Kai before this film arrives. I’m especially curious as to how Ben Wang will be introduced into this saga after that show ends. I’m thinking cameos? Easter eggs? Maybe a surprise appearance by Hilary Swank? Who knows? In Karate Kid: Legends, after a family tragedy, kung fu prodigy Li Fong (Ben Wang) is uprooted from his home in Beijing and forced to move to New York City with his mother. Li struggles to let go of his past as he tries to fit in with his new classmates, and although he doesn’t want to fight, trouble seems to find him everywhere. When a new friend needs his help, Li enters a karate competition – but his skills alone […]
I think the Marvel line of films are still in a bit of a weird place unlike the years that led up to Avengers: Endgame. Granted most of these movies will sell themselves, even as Sony’s stake in the brand continues to fluctuate. Nowadays their post-Madam Web prospects are turning out a little better with J.C. Chandor’s Kraven The Hunter which has a brand new and spectacular trailer as of the wee hours of Wednesday. The film stars Avengers: Age Of Ultron‘s Aaron Taylor-Johnson in the title role for its TBA release in December following a delay from its previous January 2023 and August 2024 dates. Kraven the Hunter is the visceral, action-packed origin story of how and why one of Marvel’s most iconic villains came to be. Aaron Taylor-Johnson plays Kraven, a man whose complex relationship with his ruthless father, Nikolai Kravinoff (Russell Crowe), starts him down a path […]
The Adil & Bilal era of “Bayhem” action cinema is certainly living up to the task in the years since Will Smith and Martin Lawrence made the Bad Boys franchise a household name with its first two installments. Sony’s Bad Boys For Life proved ample in its revival under the stewardship of the creative duo behind Black (2015) and Gangsta (2018), in addition to the casting of Expend4bles co-star Jacob Scipio in a key role that ultimately paved the way for the events laid out in the 2020 threequel. The same can be said for actor Dennis Greene in the role of son-in-law Reggie, and while we’re at it, we can also extend this to actor Joe Pantoliano in his franchise reprisal. I won’t go into the ins and outs of it in my article if you haven’t seen Bad Boys For Life yet. The good news is that official trailer […]
Actress, filmmaker and comedienne Jia Ling drew a Chinese Lunar New Year box office hit with her new boxing comedy, YOLO (a.k.a. Hot & Spicy). Following its acquisition by Sony Pictures earlier this month, the studio launched the official trailer on Friday for international release. Le Ying (played by Jia Ling) has been staying at home for many years, doing nothing in particular. After graduating from college and working for a while, Le Ying chooses to withdraw from society, closing herself off from social circles, which she believes is the best way to “reconcile” with herself. One day, after several twists of fate, she decides to live life in a different way. In cautiously venturing into the outside world, Le Ying meets boxing coach Hao Kun (played by Lei Jia-Yin). Just when she thinks life is about to take a positive turn, the challenges that follow far exceed her imagination, […]
Actor Ben Wang is taking the mantle in Jonathan Entwistle’s forthcoming installment of the Karate Kid franchise, according to THR’s Borys Kit. The announcement comes following a global casting call that kicked off last November, spearheaded by actors Ralph Macchio and Jackie Chan, with reportedly 10,000 candidates showing up in the first 24 hours. Per Kit’s reporting: According to studio insiders, Wang delivered a standout audition that demonstrated his deep connection to the character. It also helped that he is fluent in Mandarin and highly skilled across many forms of martial arts, including karate, wing chun/kung fu, gumdo, kempo and taekwondo. Some of those skills were already showcased on American Born Chinese, the well-regarded adaptation of the acclaimed coming-of-age fantasy graphic novel by Gene Luen Yang that also starred Michelle Yeoh. Wang starred in “American Born Chinese” opposite Daniel Wu, Jim Liu and Oscar winning actors Yeoh and her fellow […]
12:42pm: A previous version of this article has been updated with director and writer information, and a studio release date EARLIER: Actors Ralph Macchio and Jackie Chan will star in a new installment of the Karate Kid franchise, according to the duo on Tuesday. A new video is now online via Sony Pictures hosted by the pair who have officially confirmed their additions to the film, while launching a global casting call for potential candidates to star as the film’s titular “Karate Kid”. The news comes a little over a year after Sony added a new Karate Kid film to its slate which would have had a summer 2024 release at the time, adding to the longstanding success of the franchise that began with John G. Avildsen’s 1984 hit trilogy starter, The Karate Kid, with Macchio and co-stars Martin Kove, William Zabka and the late Pat Morita, and followed up […]
Provided that you’re not like me and you’ve been able to keep up with all things Marvel, you’re now at the latest milemarker with Sony signaling the fandom with director J.C. Chandor’s Kraven The Hunter starring Aaron Taylor Johnson and Russell Crowe. Kraven the Hunter is the visceral story about how and why one of Marvel’s most iconic villains came to be. Set before his notorious vendetta with Spider-Man, Aaron Taylor-Johnson stars as the titular character in the R-rated film. The film also stars Ariana DeBose, Fred Hechinger, Alessandro Nivola and Christopher Abbott. Sony is opening the film in March and now has a red-band trailer to help whet the appetite.
Director Tomek Baginski’s new live action manga/anime adaptation, Knights Of The Zodiac, is currently enjoying a progressive global theatrical rollout that’s already earned the film a total of US $2.4 million following its releases in Japan, Mexico, Brazil, Kenya, Romania and Latin America as of this post. The film officially opens in theaters in the U.S. this weekend when Sony Pictures and Stage6 Films can finally begin tallying up the film’s reception, marking perhaps the next biggest trial ever to be faced by Masami Kurumada’s fan favorite IP given its history. That history is given a detailed and apt exploration in an online documentary hosted and narrated by Ray Mona, who dives well into the franchise’s reception and overall studio treatment of the epic animated saga on television and home media. Going into Baginski’s new movie, Mona’s Tales Of The Lost docuseries gave me a certain appreciation for Baginski’s efforts, […]
Sony Pictures is going hard in the final weeks with its campaign to promote Tomek Baginski’s new film, Knights Of The Zodiac, and they’re following up with a bevy of promotional artwork to help build on the momentum. The artwork features the cast led by Mackenyu (Rurouni Kenshin: The Final, JoJo’s Bizzare Adventure: Diamond Is Unbreakable), who takes the mantle for the film’s central narrative stemming from Masami Kurumada’s hit manga, “Saint Seiya.” Based on the international anime sensation, Knights of the Zodiac brings the Saint Seiya saga to the big screen in live-action for the first time. Seiya (Mackenyu), a headstrong street teen, spends his time fighting for cash while he searches for his abducted sister. When one of his fights unwittingly taps into mystical powers he never knew he had, Seiya finds himself thrust into a world of warring saints, ancient magical training and a reincarnated goddess who […]
“You seem like a man who understands violence…” That’s at least one line that sticks out in the brand new trailer for Sony Pictures’ The Equalizer 3 starring Denzel Washington and fellow Man On Fire cohort Dakota Fanning and based the hit classic TV series. Antoine Fuqua directs this the third and final installment from a script by returning scribe Richard Wenk with a Fall release set for September in theaters. Also, mind you, mind your surroundings as well when you watch the trailer as it’s very much in red-band territory. It’s Washington in one of the finest and most memorable, and quite possibly one of the most violent and brutal roles of his career, and three films in after other meaty action roles in recent history including in Safe House and The Book Of Eli, he’s lived up to some mighty expectations. Enjoy! Since giving up his life as […]
Cobra Kai co-creator Jon Hurwitz took to social media to address Friday’s exciting news update pertaining to Sony Pictures’ upcoming slate, which so happens to include a new film installment for the Karate Kid franchise in 2024, as reported by multiple trade outlets. The news on Friday spawned mixed but curious reactions from fans of the franchise, including hit Netflix series Cobra Kai, which is now streaming its fifth season. The guys and I would love to make Karate Kid and Cobra Kai movies and hope to someday. But this one isn’t from us or focused on the Cobra Kai cast. Don’t know much about it, but wish it well. John Hurwitz via Twitter This likely confirms, at least tentatively until we know more, that the new film being planned won’t tie in to Cobra Kai as the show presses onto to what looks like will be a sixth season. […]
Fans riding the Cobra Kai wave of the Karate Kid fandom of late will be thrilled to know that Sony Pictures has dated a new movie to be released on June 7, 2024. The news comes through an announcement of dates listed for upcoming features from the studio, including Madame Web, Kraven The Hunter, and Garfield, to name a few. Production on the film would mark 40 years since John G. Avildsen’s inaugural 1984 award-winning martial arts drama classic, The Karate Kid, starring Ralph Macchio and William Zabka as high school rivals forced to settle their differences in the All Valley Karate Tournament. The film spawned three more live action sequels featuring Macchio and late actor Pat Morita, with actress Hillary Swank headlining Christopher Cain’s The Next Karate Kid in 1994. Jaden Smith and Jackie Chan would step up for their own revival for director Harald Zwart’s The Karate Kid (2010), […]
The latest behind-the-scenes featurette is now online for Knights Of The Zodiac, the ambitious new feature-length adaptation of Toei Animation’s hit 1986 Saint Seiya anime series based on mangaka Masami Kurumada’s best-seller. The footage went live on Wednesday and comes following its showcase at this year’s installment of Comic-Con International: San Diego. Directed by Tomazs Baginski (director of the “Polish Legends” series and executive producer on The Witcher, The Witcher: Nightmare Of The Wolf and The Witcher: Blood Origin), Knights Of The Zodiac stars actor Mackenyu (Rurouni Kenshin: The Final, Fullmetal Alchemist: The Revenge Of Scar, Fullmetal Alchemist: Final Transmutation, upcoming Netflix series One Piece), son of late action legend Sonny Chiba, in his debut feature role outside of Japan. In the film, according to the official description, Mackenyu stars in the iconic role of Seiya, “a street orphan who is recruited to start a journey in pursuit of the […]
