A formidable highlight for this year’s festival circuit, Kan Eguchi’s action comedy, The Fable, delivers a steady balance of the silly with purposeful action, story development, and palpable drama to boot. Clocking in at two hours and some change, it’s a sizeable enough template with actor Junichi Okada to absorb himself into a role layered enough to keep interesting during the film’s quieter moments. Some action fans might take umbrage some at this given much of the oddball comedy sampled in the trailers thusfar; I do posit that a good, fair viewing would defintiely change some opinions for what the film delivers during its runtime. Concordantly, you get a performance from Okada that further stipulates his gravitas as an actor – particularly one who happens to be skilled in martial arts himself, and it definitely shows. Eguchi’s The Fable takes its cues from Katsuhisa Minami’s 2014 manga of the same […]
Well, isn’t this just grand. I’ll have you know that I just recently started getting in on two animes this month. Both are getting live-action adaptations soon with Museum and Nobunaga Concerto star Oguri Shun’s latest debut in Gintama being one of them, and you can read more about that here. The other is author Tite Kubo’s popular Weekly Shonen Jump publication, Bleach, which tells of a Kurosaki Ichigo, a high school student who finds himself caught in the middle of a battle between worlds when he meets, and accidentally acquires the powers and abilities of a Soul Reaper, a warrior who defends wandering souls from Hollows – evil forces looking to consume them. The manga itself is coming to an end next week with its 74th and final issue. In the meantime, the word now is that Shinskue Sato, director of such films as The Princess Blade, Gantz and […]
A second official trailer for director Masaharu Take‘s new drama, In The Hero is online ahead of its Japan release on September 6 courtesy of Toei. The new film, written by Keiya Mizuno and Lee Bong-Ou, presents what promises to deliver a captivating story surrounding the struggles of a passionate veteran suit stunt actor training a younger, popular prodigy ahead of a film in which the director may be more demanding of the dangerous feats he wants performed for the camera. SYNOPSIS: 48-year-old Wataru Honjo (Toshiaki Karasawa) is a big fan of Bruce Lee and works as a suit actor (stunts performer wearing costumes). He is also president of “Shimoachiai Hero Action Club”. Even though he doesn’t have the typical body type for his profession he has worked in the business for 25 years. Wataru doesn’t get along with cocky rookie suite actor Ryo Ichinose, but an incident draws them […]
Director Masaharu Take‘s new film marks a milestone for lead actor Toshiaki Karasawa (20th Century Boys trilogy, Casshern) in a role that one might even say he was meant for. The new film, In The Hero, sees actor Karasawa as a seasoned suit actor and stunt club president forced to work on set with a young, cocky celebrity. Of course, there are more layers to this strikingly spectacular character study of differing generations of action stardom from scribe Keiya Mizuno, and while and while the sixteen-second teaser back in April didn’t illustrate much, the brand new teaser trailer offers a lot more insight in that regard, with several key movie-within-a-movie moments in relation to the parallel drama taking place. Director Masaharu Take has a new film on the way that centers on the evolutionary story of a rocky friendship between two very different generations of Tokusatsu. That film is titled In The Hero and stars lead actor Toshiaki Karasawa with co-star Sota Fukushi, both who are members of the same Roppongi-based entertainment group, Ken-On, and are now making their first big screen appearance together. The film also marks a return to form as both actors have a shared history as Tokusatsu performers, between Karasawa‘s membership in Toei Action Club as a teenager and Fukushi‘s most recent role in the 2011-2012 TV series, Kamen Rider Fourze. In The Hero is written by Keiya Mizuno and Lee Bong-Ou, with actress Tomoka Kurotani, and actors Susumu Terajima and Jyo Hyuga rounding out the known cast so far. The film releases in Japan on September 6. Check out the brand new teaser and a […]
