THE EMPTY HANDS Review: A Journey Of Self-Discovery Through Martial Arts

Although karate is the central theme of the plot, this movie is not a typical martial arts movie, and although there is some fighting scenes, the drama prevails over the action. The story focuses on the relationship of love and hate that Mari (our protagonist) maintains with her father (the great Yasuaki Kurata) and the art that he taught her since childhood, karate. At one point of the story, she will face the dilemma of continuing with her father´s legacy or following the path of what she considers her freedom. A contract killer and cat burglar find out they share the same man and decide to kill each other. After discovering the man has another woman, the two women team up to hunt down the man and his mistress. Stephy Tang Grabs Life By THE EMPTY HANDS In The Official Trailer For Chapman To’s Martial Arts Drama

Director and co-star Chapman To’s new feature drama, The Empty Hands, is warming up to a showing at the Hong Kong Asian Film Festival this month before opening in November. Trading in her pop idol image for that of a stoic, tempered athlete is lead actress Stephy Tang who plays an unwitting Karate school heiress looking to sell her late father’s school until she learns 51% of the business was left to one of his worst pupils. Also starring is Trivisa and Z-Storm co-star Stephen Au with action legend Kurata Yasuaki. Golden Scene HK picked up the intial rights earlier this year and after releasing a teaser in the Spring, a full trailer has been revealed in which we now get to see how adept Ms. Tang has become in front of the lens along with the cast. Chapman To’s latest directorial offering has now arrived with a first teaser for his upcoming Karate drama, The Empty Hands. Actress Stephy Tang trained for the lead role of the film and invokes just a little of it in what we see below with the story of an unwitting Karate school heiress forced to fight for her late father’s legacy in lieu of its ownership by one of his worst students. Also starring is Trivisa and Z-Storm co-star Stephen Au with action legend Kurata Yasuaki, and To himself also starring. Golden Scene recently required the rights to release the film in Hong Kong while further details await of its rollout in other territories. Noted actor Chapman To (Golden Chicken trilogy, Aberdeen, The Man From Macau 2) is venturing into his latest directing foray with martial arts drama, The Empty Hands, which has reportedly been picked up for international sales by Golden Scene. The film, currently in post-production, marks To’s second directing effort following the 2016 comedy, Let’s Eat in which To himself stars, as well as starring in Herman Yau’s crime comedy, The Mobfathers, with Anthony Wong Chau-Sing, Gregory Wong and Phillip Keung. The Empty Hands, produced by To and Tang Wai But, tells of a daughter of a karate coach eager to sell late father’s dojo only to learn that one of his worst students owns a 51% stake.
