SUICIDE SQUAD 2: James Gunn Will Write With An Eye To Direct DCEU Sequel

The Wrap confirmed in an exclusive on Tuesday that James Gunn is up for scripting and potential directing duties on the sequel to DCEU property, Suicide Squad. The move marks the latest development for the former Disney employee after being fired over tweets resurfaced by a right-wing provocateur back in July. Gavin O’Connor wrote a previous draft, whereas now Gunn’s will forsee what’s reported as an entirely different take on the property that centers on a band of super-skilled criminals fight terror at the behest of a secret government program. David Ayer wrote and directed the original, and in the course of its post-production was locked out of his own editing room by the studio in favor of a lighter-toned action adventure. Say what you will of David Ayer’s 2016 hit, Suicide Squad. Critiques notwithstanding, that Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment managed to snag up to $746 million dollars in global gross spoke only to its sequel potential moving forward while hopefully the studio gets its ducks in a row with its own line-up of DC adaptations leading up to Justice League in November and thereafter. This brings questions regarding who will direct, which, in turn, now reveals Deadline‘s latest report sharing news of Warrior helmer Gavin O’Connor who will instead helm the brewing sequel. O’Connor’s name is one of several that have circulated in the past year, particularly Ayer who left the sequel in July prior to Jaume Collet-Serra turning it down. In the months leading up to the stellar performing release of box office hit, Suicide Squad, it was already being reported that Warner Bros. was well on the way with developing a feature spin-off focusing on a female-centric narrative primed with heroines and villainesses from the DC Universe. Three months later, Suicide Squad, in the weeks proceeding director David Ayer’s bold “F**k Marvel” commentary which he eventually recanted, the film went on to gross well over $745 million dollars worldwide, flying in the faces of critics who struck the comic book adaptation with perpetually negative reviews overwhelming some positive ones. Up for seeing director David Ayer’s Suicide Squad this August? You’ll be happy to know that he and actor Will Smith are more than happy to follow through according to the latest trade reports citing a new film in development titled Bright. The film, which Ayers may direct and joins Smith with actor Joel Edgerton, is described as a cop thriller with fantasy elements such as orcs and fairies with a story led by a unique protagonist in the form of an orc cop. It’s wicked stuff and it should garner some interest over time while we await to see which studio it lands with CAA shopping it following its approval as one of 13 titles by the California State Comission, nailing a $7.2 million tax credit in the process.
