Review: Sammo Hung’s THE BODYGUARD (2016) Hits Hard And Fast, But Not Often
As I’ve said before, I wanted to like this movie. Right from the start, I was ready to have my heartstrings plucked with the idea of Ding (Sammo Hung) being an old soldier that lost his granddaughter, but it just sets up these forced, cutesy scenes with Cherry (Jacquelin Chan), the young daughter of his neighbor, Li (Andy Lau).
Sammo Hung's BODYGUARD Movie Gets A New Trailer And Poster
Oddly enough, action film legend Sammo Hung’s latest is undergoing a small identity crisis through its titling. Initially it was The Bodyguard and as of late, it was retitled My Beloved Bodyguard through some of the latest stills that have been pouring out in the past week or so, although hopefully this won’t at all affect the rollout on April 1 when it opens as either title from Edko Films, Ltd.
At any rate, Hung is guarding something! Here he plays a retired old soldier living on the Russia-China border who befriends a young girl and ultimately sets out to rescue her when her father gets mixed up with the wrong people. Andy Lau stars along with Zhu Yuchen, Li Qinqin, Eddie Peng and Feng Jia-Yi, and a number of seasoned thesps from classic Hong Kong cinema, including Yuen Wah, Yuen Biao, Tsui Hark, Karl Maka and many more.
As for the title, maybe the new poster below makes it official. What do you think?

Hong Kong action cinema legend and film stalwart Sammo Hung is has seen his share of highs and lows when it came to his own personal health in recent years. Nevertheless, he remains as tenacious as ever in filmmaking, whether it is acting, applying his signature choreography, or directing.
As of late, his return to the director’s chair has seen his involvement in the upcoming release of The Bodyguard, a title once rumored to report the involvement of fellow action legend Jackie Chan before those rumors were debunked. Since then, the cast list remains with its director leading the film along side actor and producer Andy Lau, with a hopeful reunion of Hong Kong thesps listing actress Yuen Qiu, and actors Karl Maka, Dean Shek, Yuen Wah and Tsui Hark, and possibly more to be announced.
The story of the movie follows a retired bodyguard (Hung) who has settled in the dark and unknown corner of the world where China, Russia and North Korea meet. Suffering from the beginnings of dementia, the bodyguard is befriended by a young girl whose life is threatened when her father (Lau) falls in with the local crime world. When the girl and her father disappear, the bodyguard must call upon his long forgotten skills to save the life of his young friend.
SammoHungBlog is now reporting that the film just wrapped following its production spanning from parts of Northern China to Vladisvostok, Russia in the past month or so. Lava Bear, Edko Films, Irresistible Films and Focus Films are backing the film with a release date likely set for next summer.
