The North American limited theatrical premiere of writer and director Gareth Evans‘s new film, The Raid 2 is just a week and a half away with a wider release expected next month. I’m jusy going to say it: I envy everyone who has seen it other than me! The film screened over this past weekend here in New York City, followed by an event two days later at Apple Store SoHo, and were it not for the job (or my relentless cold this month), I would have attended. But, priorities remain.
However, the one thing I am thankful for is being a part of a recent fan-based effort attributed to the film courtesy of independent filmmaker Vlad Rimburg whose latest short, Hammergirl, won fan-wide praise and approval among his niche, as well as the film’s select cast and crew since its airing last week. It was in August of last year that the character, originally played for Evans‘s new film played by actress Julie Estelle, made waves with an exclusive clip available only to Film4 Frightfest attendees, and much to their delight at that. And this week, MTV is offering just a taste of that very same scene from the film which you can now check below.
Mind you, it’s NFSW. So, by all means, go some place where sensitive eyes won’t lurk. And endulge!

Writer and director Gareth Evans has taken the world by storm with his latest critical beloved favorite, The Raid 2. The film, starring actor and action star Iko Uwais, is being accomodated with boundless praise and appreciation from critics and lucky viewers fortunate to attend early screenings since the film’s initial debut at the Sundance Film Festival in January. And just recently, the film also earned its latest entry of fan film approval by way of independent filmmaker and action choreographer Vlad Rimburg with his latest hit, HammerGirl with CZ12 co-star, actress Caitlin Dechelle.
Big things are happening this year for Evans and Uwais as developments continue for their third entry into their successful franchise by as early as 2017, with an American remake that could possibly see actors Michael Jai White (above) and Scott Adkins cast in the film if Evans gets his way. Until then, the film will finally reward the world’s patience when it debuts worldwide beginning March 28. And that includes eager onlookers in Russia, for which we also have another new international TV spot now viewable at the bottom of the page where you can also catch the first behind-the-scenes footage, courtesy of Yahoo!.

SYNOPSIS:
He thought it was over. After fighting his way out of a building filled with gangsters and madmen – a fight that left the bodies of police and gangsters alike piled in the halls – rookie Jakarta cop Rama thought it was done and he could resume a normal life. He couldn’t have been more wrong.
Formidable though they may have been, Rama’s opponents in that fateful building were nothing more than small fish swimming in a pond much larger than he ever dreamed possible. And his triumph over the small fry has attracted the attention of the predators farther up the food chain. His family at risk, Rama has only one choice to protect his infant son and wife: He must go undercover to enter the criminal underworld himself and climb through the hierarchy of competing forces until it leads him to the corrupt politicians and police pulling the strings at the top of the heap.
And so Rama begins a new odyssey of violence, a journey that will force him to set aside his own life and history and take on a new identity as the violent offender “Yuda.” In prison he must gain the confidence of Uco – the son of a prominent gang kingpin – to join the gang himself, laying his own life on the line in a desperate all-or-nothing gambit to bring the whole rotten enterprise to an end.
Adkins, off the heels of a successful run from late last year’s hit release, Ninja: Shadow Of A Tear, has gained a very significant following, with movements by fans to get him into Hollywood film roles such as that of Bruce Wayne in Zack Snyder’s Batman VS. Superman film, and in Fast And Furious 7 which resumes filming next month since its hiatus late last year. The actor drew even more attention when he paid a peculiar visit to the Thailand set of action star Tony Jaa’s new film, Skin Trade, in which White also stars. Fans have even gone so far as to start petitions for the actor whose biggest Hollywood film performances so far include namely X-Men Origins: Wolverine, The Expendables 2, and a limited theatrical run leading in director John Hyams’ 2012 film festival smash hit, Universal Soldier: Day Of Reckoning.
Writer and director Gareth Evans‘ new epic action thriller, The Raid 2, has already become a hit among critics since its debut at the Sundace Film Festival two months ago. And with screenings between last month and other early March events preceding the film’s wide release beginning March 28, the film has already garnered its fair share of poster art, including a New Zealand/Australian and an Indonesian print. Alas, with the film’s push in other markets, there are more to come, and thus Entertainment Weekly forwarded an exclusive look at the latest poster for the film being heralded as one of the greatest action movies ever made.
Check it out:
The Raid 2 follows up the events of the first film with a largely new cast of killers, gangsters to comprise Jakarta’s seedy underworld of criminal activity with Indonesian action sensation Iko Uwais as the rookie cop forced to walk the fine line between the law and the lawless in order to protect his family and root out the corruption in his police force. The film will also serve as an interquel for the next film as per Evans‘ original plan for a trilogy, so keep your eyes peeled everyone. The story is far from over!
Uwais stars with Tio Pakusadewo, Arifin Putra, Kenichi Endo, Oka Antara and Alex Abbad with Julie Estelle, Cecep Arif Rahman and returning actors Donny Alamsyah and Yayan Ruhian.

With writer and director Gareth Evans ramping up efforts to promote the forthcoming March 28, 2014 release of The Raid 2: Berandal, what is still left in the air is the issue of whether or not action star Sylvester Stallone’s August release, The Expendables 3, will actually “raid” The Raid as he so described it on Twitter last year. Regardless though, it seems all the talk of raiding everything has put The Expendables 3 helmer Patrick Hughes in a bigger light as reports indicate that the director is now being tapped to direct Screen Gems’s upcoming remake of The Raid, which is being penned by Out Of The Furnace co-scribe Brad Inglesby.
Talk of the American remake has gone on for quite a while since the success of Evans‘s film which released in 2011 and made its way overseas the following year, launching actor and martial arts action hero Iko Uwais to superstardom since their first director/star pairing in the 2009 film, Merantau. And with the American remake now on the way, fans of the franchise can only speculate which actors can capture the essence of the original characters, including brothers Rama and Andi, (intially played by Uwais and actor Donny Alamsyah), brothers on two sides of the law when a police raid unfolds in a 15-story apartment building that becomes ground zero for a deadly and bloody war with the city’s most notorious crimelord, leading to more questions about just why they are there in the first place.
Ironically, reports also indicate that actor brothers, The Expendables 2 co-star Liam Hemsworth and Thor star Chris Hemsworth are now being mentioned through the grapevine to possibly portray those roles in the remake, which still begs the question that considering the stellar performances by the original film’s Indonesian martial arts cast, including that of Fast And Furious 6 co-star and Judo expert Joe Taslim and Silat impressario Yayan Ruhian, just who can suit the role of repsective characters like Jaka and Mad Dog. In that case, there are plenty of names to go around that could suit an American remake of this very nature considering size, height and skillset as issues-names like Marko Zaror, Michael Jai White and Scott Adkins (…ahem!), either of which who could bode well for the vision of the action sequences by a certain familiar stunt coordinator out there; the list goes on, of course.
At any rate though, our friends at XYZ Films are on hand to produce this one with Gareth Evans serving as executive producer.
So, yes, sometime between now and after the August 15, 2014 release of The Expendables 3, this is happening. And if all else works out and fans support this inspired cult favorite, Hollywood may very well be able to replicate the franchise success of its own, much like the one currently being had by Evans with the release of his sequel just five weeks from now.
Stay tuned for more information.
H/T: The Wrap

Word has it that it’s pretty cool to be writer and director Gareth Evans right about now. Tuesday night’s premiere of his newest film, The Raid 2: Berandal, starring breakout action star Iko Uwais, is being met with an internet-full of praise and acclaim from Sundance Film Festival attendees and critics alike, basically reassuring fans everywhere that the film absolutely will not disappoint upon its release in March. That said, if you have been following Evans on Twitter for the past year or so, you were likely to catch a few blurbs every now and again between the director, and fellow martial arts action cinema superstar Scott Adkins mingling ideas between tweets, and probably on a much smaller scale than anything they might have discussed in private, if anything.
Adkins became the center of much of support from his worldwide fan base with recent hopes Universal Pictures would cast him in Fast And Furious 7, in addition to confirming him for Zack Snyder’s new Batman/Superman movie when it was discovered he auditioned for the role of Bruce Wayne, before it ultimately went to actor Ben Affleck. Suffice to say, fans love him, and further developments now await for news regarding Adkins‘ other upcoming projects, which also includes the upcoming fourth installment to the boxing/MMA hybridized jailhouse tournament movie series, Undisputed IV, which was announced late last year. But now, with the momentum high and a re-energized Sundance-driven roar of fan appreciation for martial arts action over in Utah, the star of director Isaac Florentine’s most recent martial arts cinema success story Ninja: Shadow Of A Tear is making his interests publicly known.
I’m officially stating it NOW!! @ghuwevans better put me in The Raid 3!!

So there it is, clear, cut and dry. And Evans tweeted to Film Combat Syndicate back in December that he has a basic outline for the third film which might arrive as early as 2017, also clarifying in recent tweets that part three would start two hours before The Raid 2: Berandal ends.
Nothing else is being publicly discussed about the third film as far as I know, as things are just now kicking off at the moment for part two. Rest assured however that whatever happens, let’s hope that outline will fit a kick ass big screen fight scene between two of the genre’s biggest shining stars to date.
The Raid 2: Berandal premieres for two more nights this month at the Sundance Film Festival in Utah before theatrically releasing in select theaters as The Raid 2 in North America, Indonesia and New Zealand on March 28, 2014, courtesy of Sony Classics.

Not a day after announcing a possible air date for the teaser, writer/director Gareth Evans’ up coming martial arts action thriller, The Raid 2: Berandal, the first official poster art has arrived exclusively via Twitchfilm from graphic designer Omar Hauksson.
The new art depicts the new cast line up featuring Iko Uwais reprising his role as a rookie tactical team from the first film as one of the few survivors of a botched raid into a crimelord’s 15-floor apartment building. For the second go around, the sequel takes place just a few hours after the first film ends as Uwais‘ character goes undercover and into the lions’ den to investigate the corruption in the police force.
Also starring are Tio Pakusadewo, Putra Arifin Scheunamann, Alex Abbad, Roy Marten and returning actor Yayan Ruhian, along with Marsha Timothy, Julie Estelle, Very Tri Yulisman, Cecep Arif Rahman, Oka Antara and Epy Kusnandar, and Japanese actors Ryuhei Matsuda, Kenuchi Endo and Kazuki Kitamura.
The film arrives in 2014. Stay tuned for teaser news!
On Thursday night, Twitter followers of action maestro Gareth Evans watched as he decided to tweet everything fans could possibly want to hear at this stage of the post production process for The Raid 2: Berandal after wrapping in July:
“Teaser trailer sent for VFX work & grading. Scoring done. Sound mix next. Aiming at putting it out around 7/11 Nov if all goes smooth.”
“Saving a bunch of stuff for the main trailer hopefully end of December early January.”
“Not planning to put too many clips out there – seems a lot of films these days are showing way too much before they even release.”
“We have 17 action sequences in the film – so there’s going to be a lot fresh material unspoiled by any teaser or trailer we release.”
“At most both combined would equate to 3mins 30s. Last I checked – the action alone clocked in around 1hr 5mins mark.”
Personally, I’m beyond words at this point about how excited I am for this movie, on top of Donnie Yen’s Special ID. I can only imagine the amount of comprehensive work that was put into making this film possible, with a fresher look and cast, and ample fight scenes centered on the film’s mainstay action style, Silat.
The Raid: Redemption is pretty much on anyone’s list of best action films of the history of martial arts cinema, and with part two on the way, one can only hope that the possible trilogy that will hopefully come of this film will leave an even bigger mark on the genre’s existence.
Writer/director Gareth Evans found himself a gold mine with this one, a fact that comes undoubtedly after the rousing approval of film festival goers in the last few months who already got to see a clip of the film. So there’s no doubt that he is handling this one with a LOT of care before stepping into the director’s chair with The Raid actor Joe Taslim for the UK action suspense thriller, The Night Comes For Us, and then possibly moving onto a third film for The Raid franchise; Time will tell how things play out by then though, with Out Of The Furnace co-scribe, screenwriter Brad Inglesby’s script for the US remake of the first film handles the task.
In the meantime, Evans, as he puts it, hopes you like your fights long, since this will be his last martial arts venture for a few years. So hopefully you are following him on Twitter, so as to have an idea of the awesomeness headed our way next year. If you have, then good. If not…then wait no more and follow him already!
By the way, Evans has one more message for you all:
To everyone that has expressed excitement & anticipation about The Raid 2 teaser. Thank you, I read everything & you’re fucking awesome.

Director Gareth Huw Evans has taken to twitter to finally unveil the actor who would play the brother to actress Julie Estelle‘s “Hammer Girl”. Actor Very Tri Yulisman can now be seen available via twitter donning his deadly weapon of choice in the upcoming blockbuster action-packed sequel thriller, tentatively titled The Raid 2: Berandal.
The photo also comes with news bearing pending poster art from graphic designer and Twitchfilm.com writer Omar Hauksson, in addition to Evans’ shameless tease about the final fight to take place, telling followers “Sorry I never normally do this, but fuck me the final fight is pretty fucking awesome! Great work by @iko_uwais and… no spoilers here :)”.
A fan poster was released several months ago before wrapping in July, thought to be that of actor Yulisman until it was verified via Twitter from Evans himself not to be so. The film has so far garnered the good graces of film festival goers in the U.K. and Toronto who got to see a brief, roughly edited clip of Estelle in action, with much approval from audiences.
The Raid 2: Berandal follows up the events from the 2011 thriller featuring Iko Uwais reprising his role from the first film as the sole survivor of a swat team slaughtered while raiding a 15-story apartment building, a deadly mission that now sees him going undercover infiltrating a Jakarta crime syndicate to flush out the corruption in his own department. Also starring are Tio Pakusadewo, Putra Arifin Scheunamann, Alex Abbad, Roy Marten and returning actor Yayan Ruhian, along with Marsha Timothy, Cecep Arif Rahman, Oka Antara and Epy Kusnandar, and Japanese actors Ryuhei Matsuda, Kenuchi Endo and Kazuki Kitamura. Uwais and Ruhian directed the action sequences along with guest fight choreographer Larnell Stovall and Hong Kong stunt coordinator Bruce Law. The film is produced by PT Merantau Films and XYZ Films.
North American distributor Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions currently has multi-territorial distribution rights to the upcoming sequel with a release date pending, following the film’s Indonesian domestic release. A teaser is expected to air between now and next month.
A few women are making headlines this week in casting news. This, in a year that continues to see a significant presence of females in action cinema, including the fourthcoming release of underground action horror flick, Raze, the Helfi Kardit-directed action thriller, Guardian, and actress Julie Estelle who’s introduction to Gareth Huw Evans’ s upcoming action sequel, The Raid 2: Berandal, which remains to be one of the most hotly-anticipated roles of the coming year.
Director Gareth Evans took to Twitter over the weekend to release the latest still of actress Julie Estelle who plays the claw-hammer wielding “Hammer Girl” in the tentatively-titled film, The Raid 2: Berandal. The still shot comes from a roughly edited action preview Evans brought to the 14th annual Film4 Frightfest a few days ago where a variety of horror films were showcased to festival goers in the UK as of August 22, 2013. The festival runs through Monday, August 26.
Director Gareth Evans took to twitter today to set the record straight on images taken from the set that we proclaimed to be of the character, Prakoso, from the set of The Raid 2, also known as its Indonesian title, Berandal, meaning “Punk”. “Okay so a few people have started posting snaps of @YayanRuhian during downtime on set as images of him as Prakoso in #TheRaid2Berandal” he tweets. “Those photos aren’t him in character… This is Prakoso #TheRaid2Berandal” he says, sharing the photo which can be seen on the left.
It took me a while to gather just who this particular character was in this peculiar-looking character poster below floating around Facebook today promoting director Gareth Evans‘s latest urban Silat action martial arts blockbuster The Raid 2: Berandal. Well, after lots of googling and searching, I came to find out that the name of the individual with the brilliant physique branding a considerably threatening baseball bat and an inconspicuous tattoo on his shoulder is Very Tri Yulisman, one of the talented stunt performers who took part in the climatic action in The Raid: Redemption, during the drug lab scene.
