Inarguably, the past three years have been pretty bustling for actor and filmmaker Vincent Soberano. The relatively known MMA trailblazer and Muay Thai expert began breaking into film notably around 2015 with sea life doc, On The Brink, and evidently segued into narrative cinema shortly thereafter.
It was late 2016 when I sought to dive a little more into the work of filmmaker and stunt performer Temujin Shirzada. His Golden Horde-produced Mulan proof-of-concept eventually led me into the throes of Asian-American martial artist, Sarah Chang and as such, her activity also helped keep me abreast of some really exciting cinema to come out of the Philippines.
The next several weeks will assure some more coverage from fellow niche sites in lieu of actor and director Vincent Soberano’s new martial arts thriller, The Trigonal. Viva Films has dibs on its local release in the Philippines and has since begun its final string of promotional rounds with the first of several countdown trailers leading up to its September 26 release.
EXCLUSIVE: The bustling career path faced by actor, martial artist and filmmaker Vincent Soberano is one that seems to have been continually ripe at nearly every turn in the past two years. Several films completed in his wake and with more in tow with partnerships currently in bloom, he is well on his way into the summer film festival season with a momentous brand that moviegoers and action fans will be very keen on in the coming months if not already.
Further details are still pending following the news we broke last month for upcoming thriller, No Man’s Waters and romantic action comedy, Three Poles, but keep these titles in mind as we now look toward the forthcoming release of Soberano’s new tournament action thriller, The Trigonal. Actor and martial artist Ian Ignacio leads the film among a raft of screen talents comprising the story of a retired martial arts champion forced to step in the ring once more when his wife and best friend fall victim to the wills of an international crime syndicate invaded his small idyllic town to launch an illegal underground fighting circuit.
The film’s campaign has been on a slow and steady rollout with at least six mini-teasers introducing our cast of characters which also include actress Rhian Ramos, actor Christian Vazquez, and multi-faceted actress Sarah Chang who also serves as the film’s fight choreographer; also starring are Levi Ignacio and Monsour Del Rosario, along with UFC contender Li JingLiang, Leigh Guda, Wu Pei Xu, Jakab Goldin and Australian actor Paul Allica. As of early Monday at 10am (Manila time), Film Combat Syndicate is more than pleased to present an exclusive look at the official trailer while Soberano and his team at Cinefenio proudly gear up for a Cannes premiere on May 9 ahead of its release in the Philippines.

With at least one directing debut coming down the pipeline, another is well on the way from filmmaker multihyphenate Vincent Soberano. The first teaser for The Trigonal has arrived over the weekend ahead of its May 2 release with a cast that enlists Ian Taylor Ignacio, Sarah Chang and Rhian Ramos.

Ignacio, who appears and Soberano’s upcoming Blood Hunters: Rise Of The Hybrids, currently has a few noteworthy credits among those listed while The Trigonal certainly serves as a potential continuation of the local action genre revival in wake of films like Nilalang and Erik Matti’s upcoming BuyBust. It’s a credible prospect for Soberano whose Best Short Film award at the Urban Action Showcase & Expo for his Blood Hunters proof of concept helped pave the way for the feature film it is now.
