Thomas Tull Departs Legendary Pictures

Some trade news over at Legendary has been made available via press release from Wanda Cultural and Legendary where Thomas Tull has been Chairman and CEO just a year before the release of the studio’s first film, Batman Begins. The following announcement below details Tull’s departure wherein he’ll still have other business apart from the staple where he’s since been the voice of many a blockbuster title, including the 2020-bound Godzilla VS King Kong, and Pacific Rim 2 when Guillermo Del Toro was still up to direct. PACIFIC RIM 2 Gets A Target Release Date!

A sequel to last year’s modest blockbuster success story, Pacific Rim, has been in development for a while now. It wasn’t going to happen right away since earning only a little over half its budget back, but I suppose grossing that same number four times over globally was pretty helpful. But most importantly, director Guillermo Del Toro wanted to do it, and so did Legendary Pictures CEO Thomas Tull. And following up with earlier reports of the director drafting a sequel with writer Zak Penn, a new video announcement is available online for the targeted theatrical release date of April 7, 2017 for Pacific Rim 2, preceded by an animated series set in the film’s universe. There were a lot of mixed reactions upon last year’s release of director Guillermo del Toro‘s most recent robo-juggernaut vs. monster spectacle, Pacific Rim. The film did okay at the box office, but not great, so the chance of a sequel remained a bit blurry thereafter. And yes, they still are, although that hasn’t stopped del Toro from doing his best to put a new script together for the sequel with screenwriter Zak Penn. “I’m working very, very hard with Zak Penn,” del Toro says. “We’ve been working for a few months now in secret. We found a way to twist it around.
