A sequel to last year’s modest blockbuster success story, Pacific Rim, has been in development for a while now. It wasn’t going to happen right away since earning only a little over half its budget back, but I suppose grossing that same number four times over globally was pretty helpful.
But most importantly, director
Guillermo Del Toro wanted to do it, and so did Legendary Pictures CEO Thomas Tull. And following up with earlier reports of the director drafting a sequel with writer Zak Penn, a new video announcement is available online for the targeted theatrical release date of
April 7, 2017 for
Pacific Rim 2, preceded by an animated series set in the film’s universe. The director also offered hopes of several principle actors returning for their roles, telling
Buzzfeed,
“The characters I love will return,… “Raleigh, Mako, Newt, Gottlieb and who knows, maybe even Hannibal Chau – but we are taking them into a fresh territory that will display amazing sights and battles. The first film set the stage and now we’re ready to have a blast.”.
Hopefully Hellboy 3 will get the same attention in the not too distant future. But until then…empty the clip, G!
