New poster sighting over the weekend for NOBODY 2!
A sequel is officially in development at Netflix for Indonesian action thriller, The Shadow Strays, according to a social media post by Timo Tjahjanto on Friday. The director also hinted at the return of actress Aurora Ribero in a caption he wrote saying “She will return.” The line is a likely reference to Ribero’s portrayal of “13,” a member of an elite clandestine organization of ninja-like assassins whose forced hiatus in Jakarta results in a violent investigation into the murder of a young boy’s mother. Her quest escalates into an all-out war with a gang of politically-connected criminals, as well as her own organization. The film throws in a lot of moving pieces that definitely set up more story arcs, so this would be an ample opportunity for Tjahjanto to capitalize on those, particularly with the cameos of action star Yayan Ruhian, as well as actress Mawar Eva de Jongh. […]
Jason Statham will return to star and produce for the sequel.
NEON BLOOD will be at the upcoming EFM in Berlin next week with XYZ Films launching world sales.
I may be of the minority when I say I wish that Timo Tjahjanto‘s latest October Netflix launch, The Shadow Strays, instead released in December as did his previous streaming banger, The Big 4 in 2022. This way, at least The Shadow Strays would feel like a proper Christmas action thriller, and not for nothing either considering the film starts in a snow-driven Yakuza safehouse where a boss with a godcomplex awaits his otherwise imminent demise. The opening action scene alone may well be worth its own whole article, at that, while the film’s current run on Netflix as of last week is now the talk of any and all in the fandom, most notably fans of Tjahjanto who’ve followed the director’s Mo’ Brothers era with a stake in the horror genre that’s conjoined him with the dialogue of Asian film and action cinema fans in the years since Indonesian […]
Primed for a Midnight Madness premiere as part of the Toronto International Film Festival in September, director Timo Tjahjanto already has fans foaming for his pending work on the sequel to 2021’s Nobody. At long last though, his latest completed effort now gets a release date in the coming months with The Shadow Strays, signaling folks with a fresh and piping hot new teaser now out and about. Codenamed 13, a 17-year-old trained assassin is currently suspended due to a sloppy mission in Japan. Meeting Monji, an 11-year-old boy who lost his mother to a crime syndicate, awakened her conscience. When Monji is captured, 13 is hell-bent on rescuing him, setting off a path of destruction and defying her mentor and the organization that hires her, known as the Shadow. I can only imagine what could have been if Tjahjanto had his way and made sequels to two of his previous […]
A small, albeit growing festival audience of late is still recovering from a rare big screen presentation of Timo Tjahjanto’s The Night Comes For Us on Sunday evening. Alas, it is hours later into Monday with the director now keeping the momentum going with a brand new teaser poster signaling an October 17 launch date on Netflix for upcoming thriller, The Shadow Strays. Perfect timing, I’d say. Setting up for four dates following its World Premiere on September 10 at the Toronto International Film Festival, The Shadow Strays stars Aurora Ribero in the role of Codename 13, an assassin sent to Jakarta on disciplinary probation after a botched job in Japan. When she crosses paths with a young boy who runs afoul of a local crime boss, the beleaguered assassin is forced to take matters into her own hands. Check out the stills and new poster below, and stay tuned […]
Timo Tjahjanto’s newest Indonesian actioner, The Shadow Strays, clocks in at almost the same duration as his previous thriller, The Big 4. Any way you slice, anyone who enjoys his work is gonna have a hell of a time watching it, and that especially goes for the crowd attending the film’s World Premiere in the Midnight Madness section of the 49th edition of the Toronto International Film Festival next month. At long last now with a trailer inbound, Tjahjanto is keeping up the traction through his teasy social media shenanigans, with the latest being a satisfying new teaser poster which you can view below. The Shadow Strays is yet to be announced a date for its Netflix launch while September 10 and 14 dates have been slated for its Toronto screenings. Peep the ink below just beneath the rousing new programming notes by Peter Kuplowsky: From action auteur Timo Tjahjanto […]
It seems you can’t dip your toe into the action film genre these days without hearing the name Timo Tjahjanto. And rightly so. He first caught the eye of horror fans with his V/H/S 2 segment, Safe Haven, where he teamed up with Gareth Evans (The Raid) to tell a terrifying tale of an evil Indonesian cult. He then rocketed onto the action scene with the Iko Uwais film, Headshot, cementing his name in the hearts of many with the Netflix production, The Night Comes For Us, also starring both Iko Uwais and bringing The Raid star, Joe Taslim, on board. After The Night Comes For Us, Hollywood jumped on Tjahjanto, with his name being tied to the upcoming Train to Busan remake, The Last Train to New York, and a possible Under Siege remake. While IMDb lists the former as being in post-production, the latter seems to have disappeared […]
Filmmaker Timo Tjahjanto took to X on Saturday to confirm plans to collaborate once again with actor, Joe Taslim. The post came a day following Tjahjanto, applying his usual ambiguity, posted a photo of himself with the actor on the same platform with a caption that read, “Chapter 2.”. The vague text led many to believe or hope that the initial post meant the possible development of a sequel to the hit Netflix thriller, The Night Comes For Us. Tjahjanto updated the post in a new quote-post, stating “We’re just looking for another feature to collaborate on, Chapter 2 in Taslim x Tjahjanto shenanigan,” The director added, “I love this kid, he’s a huge part of why I’m still working today, hooked me up with the right people when I was rock bottom & trusted me to keep on pushing with The Night.” The action packed thriller released in 2018 […]
If you’re bewildered any about what director Timo Tjahjanto (The Night Comes For Us, Headshot) is up to these days, I totally get it. I reckon as much that we can just about deduce all of his priorities down to the project he has at his disposal following his deal with Netflix, and for all intents and purposes, it’s been a worthwhile journey to follow. Between his past work and his solo directorial gigs in the last several years, he’s proven himself more than able to meet the demand, and with any luck, he’s bound to do that again. Enter The Shadow Strays, for one. Announced Thursday by the streamer, production is under way on the action thriller with a cast that reunites him with other select performers from his previous film, The Big 4. Production hails from Frontier Pictures and is produced by Wicky V. Olindo, and Anne P. […]
It’s been a minute since director Timo Tjahjanto’s newest action comedy, The Big 4, started streaming on Netflix and as full as my plate is, I couldn’t end ’22 without lending my two cents on the pic which otherwise continues the director’s nascent relationship with the streamer since 2018’s The Night Comes For Us. Until this month, that title for me stood as my favorite Indonesian action film given all the fanfare in the decade since Iko Uwais and Joe Taslim began making headway in the festivals via the work of Gareth Evans. Granted, Tjahjanto’s craft goes deeper into horror more than anything, and so when he does R-rated action, his hardcore approach is an absolute crowd-pleaser. It also compliments The Big 4, which is something much different in the sense that if you’ve seen films like Lethal Weapon or Tango & Cash or any other R-rated buddy cop or […]
Now only a matter of weeks until its release, Indonesian director fave Timo Tjahjanto’s newest action comedy, The Big 4, has a brand new official trailer to accomodate fans who’ve been long patient in the years they’ve regaled enjoying his past works. The most notable to date of course includes the elevated action and spectacle he’s introduced in 2018’s The Night Comes For Us and alongside co-helmer Kimo Stamboel for Headshot, and we’re definitely getting a few glimmers of it here with the cast in action. That leaves us with a roster led by actress Putri Marino who plays a by-the-book detective who finds herself teaming up with the four retired assassins – trained and mentored by her late father (played by Budi Ros) – in order to avenge his death. Rounding out the cast are Abimana Aryasatya, Lutesha, Arie Kriting, and Kristo Immanuel, along with Marthino Lio, Michelle Tahalea, […]
You know something, I might be reading too much into it, but there’s at least one split-second shot in the footage above that has me believing we should expect at least one of our dreams to come true in the years since Timo Tjahjanto’s The Night Comes For Us. It’s speculative, frankly, but for now, the trailer for the hit Indonesian horror and action auteur’s newest venture now lands squarely in our sights this week for hitman comedy, The Big 4, which launches on Netflix beginning December 15. A by-the-book detective investigates the death of her father and follows a clue to a remote tropical island, only to find out his true identity as a leader of a group of assassins. Now hunted by his enemies, she has to team up with the crooks her father had trained – four retired, down-on-their-luck assassins itching to get back in the game. […]
Try picking director Timo Tjahjanto’s brain from any distance about what he has in store and he’ll be about as cryptic as he wants. He can certainly afford it, especially after wowing thriller fans with hits like Killers and two installments of the May The Devil Take You franchise, as well as actioners Headshot and the ever pulsating The Night Comes For Us, and the same goes for what fans are hoping for with its spin-off, The Operator, and whatever you decide to take from this reply to a fan via Twitter. That, of course, leaves us with what he’s up to now with Netflix’s widely reported investment in Southeast Asian content, including Indonesia’s Tjahjanto who has since shared the first teaser poster for his latest action flick, The Big 4. Tjahjanto directs from a script he wrote with Johanna Wattimena, which centers on a dogged detective whose investigation into […]
Folks waiting with baited breath to learn just what director Timo Tjahjanto is working on since tearing it up on the screen with a slew off horrific action and suspense thriller in the last several years can now take a gander at the first unit still from his current production, The Big 4. The film is one of several projects revealed on Friday at Waktu Netflix Indonesia (Time for Netflix Indonesia), which includes a variety of action, sci-fi, comedy and drama within what’s been described as “its most ambitious slate yet.” A by-the-book detective investigates the death of her father and follows a clue to a remote tropical island, only to find out his true identity as a leader of a group of assassins. Now hunted by his enemies, she has to team up with the crooks her father had trained – four retired, down on their luck assassins itching […]
Of all the properties you’d expect celebrated Indonesian filmmaker Timo Tjahjanto to be attached to, you least expect it would be a reboot of Andrew Davis’s 1992 hit thriller, Under Siege. Alas, that now seems to be the case with none other than Kate scribe Umair Aleem penning the script for Warner Bros. The plan, according to Deadline‘s Anthony D’Alessandro, is to release the remake on HBO Max. There’s no word though if the film’s original star, Steven Seagal, would return to the table as former Navy SEAL-cum-cook Casey Ryback, but the film was definitely another page turner for action fans thirty years ago, along with its 1995 sequel (frankly it wouldn’t be a reboot if Ryback returned anyway, otherwise it would be categorized as a sequel, which this isn’t). Let’s face it though: I was a fan of Seagal until his career post-Half Past Dead as he resumed churning […]
