Moka Kamishiraishi stars in Tsutomu Hanabusa’s latest manga adaptation!
The film is directed by “Kagegurui” and “Tokyo Revengers” director Tsutomu Hanabusa.
If there’s one thing that bothers me the most – at least as I write this, it’s when news of a film makes it to a legit accessible streaming platform here in the states and there’s barely a blurb about it newswise. At any rate, consider this a call to action as Tsutomu Hanabusa’s live-action adaptation of Ken Wakui’s Tokyo Revengers is now streaming on Crunchyroll two years after its release. The film stars Takumi Kitamura in the role of a loser who finds himself able to travel back-and-forth in time while mitigating with the brother of the only woman he’s ever loved, and tasked with traveling back to high school in order to prevent her present day death. I got to screen the film during Fantasia XXV and you can read my review here. Needless to say, it was a blast to check out, and with the two-part sequel […]
I’ll wait as long as it takes for Tsutomu Hanabusa’s inaugural Tokyo Revengers flick to get a Western distributor. It was a favorite among faves back in 2019 and I would love to help share it with audiences in my neck of the globe if possible, especially with Warner Bros. Japan now shepherding a back-to-back sequel this Spring and Summer based on Ken Wakui’s hit manga. Making his return to the fray from returning scribe Izumi Takahashi is none other than Takumi Kitamura in the lead role of Takemichi Hanagaki once more, following the events of the first film. Alas, as if stumbling back in time to redo his yesteryear teenage hard knocks to save his beloved, Hinata, in the future from certain death wasn’t enough, our would-be hero must now endure his trials yet again to settle old scores with former friends and possibly save her once and for […]
It was back in July when Warner Bros. Japan teased a sequel to Tsutomu Hanabusa’s hit adaptation of Ken Wakui’s gangbuster manga, Tokyo Revengers. As of Tuesday, the studio is staying steady with a brief, brand-new teaser signaling the sequel’s two-part 2023 rollout titled Tokyo Revengers 2: Bloody Halloween Arc, with the first part set to arrive in Spring titled “Fate” and the second being “Decisive Battle” by the Summer. Izumi Takahashi sat in once more to pen the screenplay for the sequel which sees actor Takumi Kitamura reprising his role as 26-year old Takemichi Hanagaki, who discovers a time portal and uses it to travel back to high school to save Hinata Tachibana (Mio Imada) the only woman he’s ever loved from being murdered in the present day. That task ultimately found him retracing old steps and undoing past mistakes to climb the ranks of teen gangster hierarchy, a […]
Director Tsutomu Hanabusa is coming back for another round of explosive teenage time travel beatdowns with a sequel to last year’s hit manga adaptation, Tokyo Revengers. The news was announced on Saturday in a teaser announcement from the studio which you can view in the player above, featuring snippets of the first film including lead actor Takumi Kitamura who will reprise his role once more. The inaugural film and its upcoming 2023 sequel are based on Ken Wakui’s 2017 manga and centers on Takemichi Hanagaki, a loser living in a crappy apartment who learns that Hinata, the only girlfriend he ever had was killed by the villainous Tokyo Manji Gang. Upon getting shoved into a time portal and sent back ten years, the accident sets off a series of opportune events for Hanagaki to undo his past, climb the ranks of the gangs, and save Hinata’s life. The first film […]
There’s ample reason why it is anyone in my time zone, or living within three hours within it, can tell you their perceptions about the state of live-action projects based on any Japanese IP to negative avail for the past decade. Granted, barring any such announcements made in the last four or five years, it still bears noting the phenomena of what we’ve seen on the feature film front, specifically with Japanese studios. That’s not to say Japan hasn’t had its misses, but the hits are nearly as consistent as you would expect compared to anywhere else. Warner Bros. Japan’s own streak remains supreme of late with Kakegurui shepherd Tsutomu Hanabusa’s treatment of mangaka Ken Wakui’s Tokyo Revengers, based on the 2017 manga adapted for TV by Liden Films this Spring, and for this summer’s big screen run by Izumi Takahashi (Zebra, Museum, One Night). The bulk importance of films […]
Rurouni Kenshin won’t be the only live-action manga IP that Warner Bros. Japan is committed to ramping up in 2021. For this, we now leave it to the first short teaser for Tokyo Revengers, based on Ken Wakui’s 2017 manga. Director Tsutomu Hanabusa, the mind behind bringing character favorite Yumeko Jabami in the live-action Kakegurui series and films of late, sits at the helm with actor Takumi Kitamura (Underdog) leading the cast for a July 2021 release date to be announced. Watching the news, Takemichi Hanagaki learns that his girlfriend from way back in middle school, Hinata Tachibana, has died. The only girlfriend he ever had was just killed by a villainous group known as the Tokyo Manji Gang. He lives in a crappy apartment with thin walls, and his six-years-younger boss treats him like an idiot. Plus, he’s a complete and total virgin … At the height of his […]
