As repoted by the trades this week, Highland Film Group’s The Avenue has secured North American distribution rights for action thriller, The System. The film stars Tyrese Gibson (The Fast & Furious franchise), Terrence Howard (Lionsgate’s Crash, Fox’s “Empire”), Jeremy Piven (HBO’s “Entourage”), and Lil Yachty (Lionsgate’s Long Shot). Filmed on location in Jackson, Mississippi, and directed from a script by helmer Dallas Jackson (Netflix’s Thriller), The System centers on a former marine (Gibson), recruited by authorities to go undercover in a notoriously dangerous prison following a drug bust. Jon Keeyes (The Harrowing) is currently busy with independent action thriller, Red 48, with word that production is close to wrapping this week. As Borys Kit at THR notes, Tyrese Gibson is headlining the pic along with Michael Jai White and John Malkovich from a script by Mickey Solis. The film reportedly centers on Kyle Snowden, “a troubled former Marine turned child protective service officer who must save an immigrant child from a dangerous criminal who has trapped them and other hostages inside a convenience store. Adding more power to the keg: The store is owned by the Snowden’s stepfather, Sam Safty, being played by Malkovich. But, with the property now poised for a potential inclusion in Warner Bros.’s currently brewing DC movieverse between 2017 and 2020, actor and musician Tyrese Gibson is now fastracking his own campaign to claim the lead role. The most recent live-action portrayal came from actor Ryan Renyolds in a 2011 adaptation that ultimately flopped, which is probably a good thing considering he should have already been filming Deadpool by then at least. The announcement marks the third change in dates since the film, which also features lead actor Vin Diesel, shifted its original July 11, 2014 date to April 10, 2015 last December, following the off-set accidental death of lead actor Paul Walker last November.
