‘WARRIOR’ TV Series Spin-Off Lands At Paramount+ With Additional Cast

It was last Fall that Warrior helmer Gavin O’Connor made it known that a television spin-off of his hit 2011 film was in the works and in talks to streamers to help shop the series. On Thursday, Mike Fleming Jr.’s exclusive re-affirmed the show’s existence with word that Lionsgate Television is developing the ten-episode series for Paramount+. The report also notes that actress Gina Rodriguez (Miss Bala, I Want You Back) will join retired two-time UFC champion Daniel Cormier, who was attached as of September of 2021, to star in the series among its four main principal cast members. O’Connor is aiming to direct all ten episodes, and is creating the show with Adair Cole, with whom he will also serve as showrunner. Director Gavin O’Connor is partnering with Lionsgate for a television spin-off based on 2011 sports drama, Warrior. O’Connor, whose credits also include Miracle and The Way Back, confirmed as much in an interview with Discussing Film’s Michael Slavin on Tuesday. The reveal for the new show, Warriors, came during a portion of the interview regarding movie sequel prospects where O’Connor expressed having difficulty on “how to do it and make it better than the first one”, adding further on “…I knew if I couldn’t make a better movie, or at least make something that had some kind of artistic merit that’s worth asking people to spend money to go see it, I just didn’t want to like fucking prostitute myself. Warriors is an Argentinian short film that uses martial arts as the back drop of a deeper message. Directed by and co-starring Fabricio Martin, the story takes place in a private martial arts competition with our protagonist and another opponent. What seems to look like a martial arts drama goes into something more, with a message that resonates with anyone and not just martial artists. From what we are shown at the beginning, Pablo is an underground fighter that is participating in some illegal looking competition to pay for his grandmother’s house so she doesn’t get evicted. His coach, however, is in it for the money and wants Pablo to hide a knuckle duster in is left glove to finish the fight when the time is right.
