WONDER WOMAN 2 Hails Gal Gadot And Chris Pine In A New Era With New Foes As Cameras Roll For A 2019 Release

Warner Bros. Pictures has undergone a bit of a facelift behind the scenes in the last several months following recent questionable results with its DCEU films. Thankfully all else continues with Patty Jenkins moving forward with the production of Wonder Woman 2 just as Gal Gadot rejoins actor Chris Pine from the original film and which may take some explaining for fans otherwise not knowing of the source material. I’m sure not so… color me intrigued, pictures and deets below notwithstanding (click for larger viewing).

BURBANK, Calif.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Fast forward to the 1980s as Wonder Woman’s next big screen adventure finds her facing an all-new foe: The Cheetah. Principal photography is underway on Warner Bros. Pictures’ follow up to the Super Hero’s first outing, last summer’s record-breaking “Wonder Woman,” which took in $822 million at the worldwide box office.

“Wonder Woman 1984” will also be helmed by acclaimed director Patty Jenkins, and star Gal Gadot in the title role. As previously announced, the film also stars Kristen Wiig in the role of the Super-Villain The Cheetah, as well as Pedro Pascal. And Chris Pine returns as Steve Trevor.

Charles Roven, Deborah Snyder, Zack Snyder, Patty Jenkins, Stephen Jones and Gal Gadot are producing the film. Rebecca Roven Oakley, Richard Suckle, Wesley Coller, Geoff Johns and Walter Hamada are the executive producers.

Joining her behind the scenes are several members of Jenkins’ “Wonder Woman” team, including director of photography Matthew Jensen, Oscar-nominated production designer Aline Bonetto (“Amélie”), and Oscar-winning costume designer Lindy Hemming (“Topsy-Turvy”). Oscar-nominated editor Richard Pearson (“United 93”) will cut the film.

Production will take place in Washington, D.C., Alexandria, Virginia, and in the UK, Spain and the Canary Islands.

Set to open in theaters November 1, 2019, “Wonder Woman 1984” is based on the character created by William Moulton Marston, appearing in comic books published by DC Entertainment. It will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

With Marvel continuing to break records with its slate, Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment are towing things a bit carefully as they play catch-up with their comic book film schedule. Wonder Woman was an unquestionably significant step forward for the studio both commerically as well as critically and socially for fans proving to be a worthy shepherdess for female empowerment in cinema.

Production is now months away from filming its sequel which will be set in a modern period following the World War II backdrop of the first film that ultimately pit actress Gal Gadot in the title role against Ares. For this, Deadline has it on good terms that SNL veteran, actress and comedian Kristen Wiig (Ghostbusters, Zoolander 2) is up to play the villainess role of Cheetah for Patty Jenkins’ return to the helm ahead of its Novemeber 1, 2019 release.

According to comic book lore, there are two female versions known in Marv Wolfman’s Crisis On Infinite Earths series in 1985, and a male AND female version post-Crisis. That’s four different incarnations in total, and while we can probably rule out at least one, we still need details on what the film’s plot will observe. This ought to make things interesting.

Patty Jenkins Officially Returning For WONDER WOMAN 2

It was likely a matter of time following last month’s update regarding Patty Jenkins’s stirring talks to return to the helm for Wonder Woman 2. That said, it looks as if the deal has officially been sealed for Patty Jenkins to direct the sequel which opens on December 13, 2019.

Wonder Woman opened to critical and box office acclaim in the months that followed its June 2 release, topping $410 million dollars domestically within its global gross of $813 million dollars. Its initial weekend opening garnered it as the largest female-lead superhero movie opening of all time, as well as the biggest opening in June for a superhero movie, and the biggest opening in June for a Warner Bros. film. It earned $100.5 million at the top of its release making it the highest opening weekend box office of all time for a female director.

Variety reports that Jenkins’s return could ver well mean an $8 million dollar pay package to to write, direct and produce, in addition to receiving a substantial back end of box office earnings, which would make her the highest paid female director of all time.

Production details remain pending while actress Gal Gadot is expected to reprise the title role for the fourth time in Warner Bros.’s current expansion of the DC cinematic universe which began with actor Henry Cavill’s 2013 headliner, Man Of Steel, from director Zack Snyder. Gadot and Cavill will reunite once more following Batman V. Superman: Dawn Of Justice in Snyder’s Justice League this November.

Just as fans have hoped, it became clearer on Thursday evening that filmmaker Patty Jenkins was more than qualified to return to the director’s chair for the upcoming Wonder Woman sequel. With payday kinks still being worked on, reports finally came in more than two and a half months after the film’s principal release that the acclaimed Monster helmer was in final talks to return for the second film reprising actress Gal Gadot in the title role once more.

The first film was a long-awaited feat after years of having the character presented in comic book pages by creator William Moulton Marston, as well as on television and other media and merchandise. Written by Allan Heinberg and hailed with a powerful score by Rupert Gregson-Williams, the movie follows Gadot’s portrayal from her debut in last year’s Batman V. Superman: Dawn Of Justice, exploring the primary tale of young, ambitious Diana whose idyllic life on the interdimensional Amazonian island of Themyscira is challenged with the looming threat of World War II in association with the hidden auspices of the pious evil known as Ares.

Wonder Woman went on to reach several ‘bests and other milestones, including for its director; Apart from earning a global gross of more than $797 million dollars to date with Japan markets still in tow, the film managed to rake in a domestic total of $400 million dollars earlier this month, making it the highest earning film of the summer and marking it as the third-highest grossing Warner Bros.
