A December 29 release is in order over in China for directing duo Li Shaohong and Chang Xiaoyang’s patriotic war thriller, Liberation. Set in 1949 during the final stages of the battle of Pingjin, the film stars Wallace Chung, Elaine Zhong, Zhou Yiwei, Phillip Keung and Yang Mi.
Director Lu Yang’s 2014 period thriller, Brotherhood Of Blades, was a rollicking and highly heralded feat of swordplay-infused suspense and drama. The sequel, a precursor to the intial film has already taken shape in China and now has a stake in North America for a December 1 theatrical release in select theaters with Brotherhood Of Blades 2: The Infernal Battlefield. An imperial guard searches for the truth behind a conspiracy that framed him and his partners. The proof of his innocence lies with a wanted woman named Bei Zhai… but will she reveal what she knows? The likelihood of acquisition news for audiences overseas seems imminent nowadays for director Lu Yang; His new movie, Brotherhood Of Blades 2 opens on August 11 in China and a new trailer has arisen to stir the pot some until then. While investigating a case, Shen Lian becomes wrapped up in his own conspiracy. In order to prove his innocence, he teams up with Bei Zhai to clear his name before time runs out. Actor Chang Chen returns to this prequel setting with actress Yang Mi, with actor Zhang Yi (Mountains May Depart) and Berlinale Silver Bear-winning actress Xin Zhilei (Crosscurrent) also starring. I’m about as knowledgeable as the next person on who four-time filmmaker Chang is. There’s at least one other title still on my wish list at current with the 2014 Fred Cavayé remake nod, The Target, while his most recent endeavor, Reset, has taken a foothold in China with a release this summer. The film presents a kinetic sci-fi thriller with a nicely woven story that embraces the sort of usual subliminal and obvious messaging on time travel and the shortspan of human life in the course of everyday tasking and multitasking. Actress Yang Mi draws out the narrative for this as Xia Tian, a single mother who finds herself and her son swept into a death spiral when her company’s recent breakthroughs in particle teleportation are made known to its more nefarious rival company.
