OPINION: Tiger Takei Versus Pegg Legg

There is a war of canons being taken advantage of on the new Star Trek movie and it’s not pretty. It deals specifically with co-writer Simon Pegg re-introducing a beloved character, Hikaru Sulu, to us as gay. Sadly, it infringes upon the well-established canon that the late Gene Roddenberry took seriously. To add insult to injury, Pegg says he “respectfully disagrees” with actor George Takei‘s recent comments, the original actor who portrayed Hikaru Sulu, about how Gene envisioned him as straight. Takei came out publicly as gay in 2005. Later in life while producing Star Trek: The Next Generation, Mr. Roddenberry thought it was time to introduce a gay character. It didn’t happen because of Rick Berman and Mr. Roddenberry’s lawyer, both allegedly homophobes. Writer David Gerrold describes personal and professional events here on that issue. STAR TREK: BEYOND Teases Kirk's Last Mission In The Final Trailer

Prospects are looking great for anime classic, Akira with Justin Lin currently circling the long-awaited live-action adaptation according to much fan fervor stemming from last week. Time will tell to see if and how that latest bit sticks while it’s been a few years since Lin was attached to a few projects, including an iteration of Jet Li classic, Shaolin Temple. Of course, sci-fi fans and Trekkies alike may be thankful for his involvement on Paramount Pictures’s third installation of the Star Trek reboot epic, Star Trek: Beyond. The latest trailers since then have all been exciting and stimulating along with several key bits of artwork, which much of that energy is ado with those grieving over the loss of its co-star, Anton Yelchin last week. Killers Collide In The Final Trailer For HITMAN: AGENT 47

Director Aleksander Bach is still very much a busy guy with another film on the way, so his latest directorial debut in the live-action game adaptation, Hitman: Agent 47 already looks like an amazing start to a fruitful career in theatrical filmmaking. Moreover, I’ll be the first to admit I’m all for seeing this when it comes out in the next few weeks if I can help it, particularly since I love spectacular game adaptations with a fighting element. Homeland actor Rupert Friend leads the cast here with an seemingly impeccable approach to the character along with actress Hannah Ware and actor Zachary Quinto thickening the plot just a tad. This, in addition to some kick ass fight coordination by Jonathan Eusebio who did the same for last year’s action blast, John Wick, makes Hitman: Agent 47 just fine by me and well worth the price of a ticket. Chris Pine And Zachary Quinto Confirmed For A Fourth STAR TREK Film

Star Trek: Beyond is reportedly revving up production this week in Canada and the word now is that lead actors Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto have signed onto a fourth film, according to THR. Both, who respectively reprise the roles of James T. Kirk and Vulcan-born Spock, were reportedly optioned a fourth movie as the result of concessions made by Paramount when the intial 7-year deal in 2007 prior to the two appearing in J.J. Abrams 2009 reboot, Star Trek, expired last year as development on the upcoming third film languished. As a result, compromises were made to help stave off settling anything in court, which, incidentally, allowed not only for a bigger pay for both actors, but the additional attachment of a fourth film which essentially confirms a fourth Star Trek is now in order. The New Trailer For HITMAN: AGENT 47 Takes Dead Aim!

Before the previous couple of years, it might have been easy to believe that actor Timothy Olyphant’s title role in director Xavier Gens’s 2007 cinematic incarnation of the popular Square Enix game, Hitman, would have been enough for a continuation; I certainly know I like it, and was always curious to see what would come of it. Alas, 20th Century Fox has since taken initiative to reinvigorate the franchise with a new film and a new actor, now starring Rupert Friend (in place of late actor Paul Walker who was announced for the role in early 2013) in Aleksander Bach‘s new theatrical film adaptation, Hitman: Agent 47.
