“You must know… you can’t win.” That’s a line voiced by Anthony Hopkins in the mo-capped robot role of Jimmy opposite the lead heroine in actress Sofia Boutella as they and the cast get ready to close things out with Zack Snyder’s April 19 release, Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver. Indeed that line had me recounting Boutella’s recent reception of the fan backlash along with the eventful surge of Snyder-hate that usually arises. I admit, even I share some opinions as we’re all allowed to, but my focus is largely on the work and for what it’s worth, Boutella has been a fantastic player in the film arena. She’s a favorite, and on that note, The Scargiver looks like it’ll be fun to gaze at when it releases. REBEL MOON — PART TWO: THE SCARGIVER continues the epic saga of Kora and the surviving warriors as they prepare […]
Just in time for the crowd over at GamesCon on Tuesday came the arrival of the first, extensive trailer footage for Zack Snyder’s new sci-fi epic, Rebel Moon. Making good on the promise of a twofer is the included announcement of the first chapter titled A Child Of Fire on December 22, followed by The Scargiver next year on April 19. From Zack Snyder, the filmmaker behind 300, Man of Steel, and Army of the Dead, comes REBEL MOON, an epic science-fantasy event decades in the making. When a peaceful colony on the edge of a galaxy finds itself threatened by the armies of a tyrannical ruling force, Kora (Sofia Boutella), a mysterious stranger living among the villagers, becomes their best hope for survival. Tasked with finding trained fighters who will unite with her in making an impossible stand against the Mother World, Kora assembles a small band of warriors […]
As hard as it is to keep up with superhero lore in movie news, it is also intriguing to observe over time. Updates on development, creative choices, and casting can read as nothing more than “leaked” reports or merely suggest insight from otherwise unnamed “sources” and frankly, it’s all just bullshit to take with a grain of salt until the trade reports are published, the IMDb pages get updated, stills are distributed and a trailer is released. That’s the approach I’ve taken, although I rarely speak on superhero films until I feel like throwing my hat in the ring, and so before we segue into a new year, after one in which we’ve now born witness to some of the most divisive events on a corporate level to ever affect consumers on a massive scale since the sale of Lucasfilm to Disney, I thought I’d chime in. At least before […]
Zack Snyder revealed a trio of images via social media which you can view above, conveying some conceptual art for his new Netflix space adventure epic, Rebel Moon. The images come with the announcements of newly added cast members Charlie Hunnam (Sons of Anarchy, Shantaram, The Gentleman, King Arthur: Legend of the Sword), Djimon Hounsou (The King’s Man, A Quiet Place Part II, Blood Diamond), Doona Bae (The Silent Sea, Jupiter Ascending, Sense8), and Ray Fisher (Zack Snyder’s Justice League, True Detective, Women of the Movement). The aforementioned all join actress Sofia Boutella who was firstly attached to news of the project last November. Jena Malone, Staz Nair, E. Duffy, Charlotte Maggi, and Sky Yang round out the cast with a script storied by Snyder and by Kurt Johnstad, and written by Snyder and Johnstad, and by Shay Hatten. When a peaceful colony on the edge of the galaxy finds itself threatened by the armies […]
Netflix has announced it’s first acquisition under their first look partnership with The Stone Quarry Productions, a production company founded by Zack and Deborah Snyder and their producing partner Wesley Coller. Starring Sofia Boutella (Fahrenheit 451, The Kingsman) the film marks not only the first film under a first look deal with Netflix and The Stone Quarry, but also continues Netflix’s relationship with the company and the Snyders after the success of Army of the Dead and it’s prequel Army of Thieves, which is the current #1 film in 90+ countries. This film also is a reunion for Eric Newman (Producer at Grand Electric), Snyder, and Netflix’s Scott Stuber. Stuber previously worked with Newman and Snyder when overseeing Snyder’s work on Newman’s first film, 2004’s Dawn of the Dead, while the Vice-Chairman of Universal. Along with director duties, Zack Snyder also served as a writer alongside Kurt Johnstad and Shay […]
Always the rabblerouser, filmmaker Zack Snyder lit up both ends of the candle this year with a four-hour rendition of his long-heralded self-titled Justice League on HBO Max, and action-packed dystopian zombie romp, Army Of The Dead, which has its own franchise currently brewing on Netflix. As of May, the latter claimed the badge of most-streamed title, beating out the recently-canceled Jupiter’s Legacy series, continual proof that the Sucker Punch helmer is what’s working for the streamer after his underappreciated run at HBO Max, and despite any and all fan fervor to get us all back to the DC Snyderverse. And so it is, for Snyder’s current trajectory being the only way forward, we now look to his newest endeavor, Rebel Moon, initially announced by The Hollywood Reporter’s Borys Kit and then by the streamer late Tuesday. When a peaceful colony on the edge of the galaxy finds itself threatened by […]
I’m not a huge horrorhead like our own Christina Ortega Phillips, though I always prefer a good thriller to bide my time more than anything. For this, you can trust that a zombie movie like Army Of The Dead is something I would’ve avoided as nothing short of what sounded like the title of another direct-to-Walmart action flick were it not for the huge names attached – including one Zack Snyder, best known for rallying a loyal cult following with graphic novel-style flexes such as 300, Watchmen and Sucker Punch, coupled with the kind of signature “messy” flair he applies to his craft. Going into his latest movie, I’m reluctant to dive too far into an in-depth review, lest I get roped into the Twitter drama over Snyder’s creative decisions; I spent a good few hours back-and-forth online looking up opinions by fellow colleagues and movie fans, and even some […]
Army of the Dead (dir. Zack Snyder), looks to be just another run-of-the-mill heist flick with a few of the undead tossed in for flavor. The trailer opens with the sound of the late great Kenny Rogers classic, “The Gambler” as a seemingly smart foreshadowing to the trailer that follows. Scott Ward, played by Dave Bautista (Guardians of the Galaxy, My Spy) is a humble cook with an heroic past just making ends meet until, that is, he is approached by the token mysterious stranger who tasks our soon to be entrenched warrior with a proposal he, and a group of other hard on their luck mercenaries cannot refuse, with just a few thousand(?) caveats: Zombies. And not just any aforementioned standard issue ghouls. “They are smarter. They are faster. And they are Organized.” The three-minute long trailer lays down the premise for what looks to be a fly by […]
(It’s been years since I used this headline. Bear with me while I flush these opinions out, and if I sound a little bitter, it’s because.. well, I am. Originally published March 19, 2021) If you were to ask me five years ago if I wanted to cover comic book movies, I would have said something along the lines of “…Well yeah, of course. Only I can’t do that a whole lot, and mainly because keeping up with all the trade news, rumors and soundbytes takes more of a marathon effort than I can apply right now.” That is still true for me, albeit stemmed from the conclusive fact that comic book movies nowadays thrive on hype to sell themselves, without much input from voices like my own. And really, the only other thing that can discourage me from truly diving into the genre is the kind of creative malfeasance […]
The past few weeks have been a little more eye-opening for me, personally – in particular, the experience derived from having just seen Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice – Ultimate Edition which is streaming on HBO Max. It’s just above three hours, and for what it’s worth, it’s a treatment that handedly lends more to the overall tapestry of what was supposed to be a more vast, theatrical cinematic universe of DC Comics adaptations that began with director Zack Snyder’s inceptive Man Of Steel in 2013. And not for nothing either, apart from the hit-or-miss lay-up of DCEU movies out of Warner Bros. Pictures and New Line Cinema up to this point, along with the faltered finishing touch by long since-disgraced filmmaker Joss Whedon on 2017’s Justice League. While Patty Jenkins has successfully taken the reigns full-on with bringing Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman to life between two standalone movies […]
One thing is certain when it comes to the upcoming release of Zack Snyder’s Justice League… well, two actually. Firstly, it’s been said that the newest incarnation, topping at four hours based on previous and current reports, will be a new and completely different take on its 2017 counterpart – as hinted notably by the teaser above from a while back. In ZACK SNYDER’S JUSTICE LEAGUE, determined to ensure Superman’s (Henry Cavill) ultimate sacrifice was not in vain, Bruce Wayne (Ben Affleck) aligns forces with Diana Prince (Gal Gadot) with plans to recruit a team of metahumans to protect the world from an approaching threat of catastrophic proportions. The task proves more difficult than Bruce imagined, as each of the recruits must face the demons of their own pasts to transcend that which has held them back, allowing them to come together, finally forming an unprecedented league of heroes. Now […]
#ReleaseTheSnyderCut has been the social media driving force from fans in the wake of director Zack Snyder’s hampered mixed bag of untapped potential that was superhero ensemble, Justice League. All you need really at this point is to check out Screen Junkies’s “honest trailer” from a few years ago (and maybe this one too just for shits and gigs) to get the gist of what’s what, but with rumors forever shrouding the conversation with suspicion over the existence of an unreleased director’s cut, it wasn’t until last December when Snyder made it official in a not-so-cryptic Vero post. That, and everything else the director has posted in the months since then now brings us to the timely announcement of Snyder’s director’s cut of Justice League, which will now have its exclusive world premiere in 2021 on streaming platform, HBO Max, which officially launches on May 27. The Warner Bros. Pictures/DC […]
Cameras are officially rolling in Albuquerque, New Mexico for Watchmen, Man Of Steel and Dawn Of The Dead helmer Zack Snyder’s new Netflix action horror, Army Of The Dead. Actors Omari Hardwick (Power, Sorry to Bother You), Chris D’Elia (You, Man on Fire), Garret Dillahunt (Widows, No Country For Old Men) and Samantha Win (Arrow, Justice League) join the cast led by Stuber star Dave Bautista, Ella Purnell, Ana De La Reguera, Theo Rossi and Huma Qureshi. Storied by Snyder who penned the script with Joby Harold and Shay Hatten, the film centers on a band of mercenaries who set out to pull off the greatest heist ever attempted as a zombie outbreak fully underway in Las Vegas. Also starring are Hiroyuki Sanada (Avengers: Endgame, Westworld, Minamata), Matthias Schweighöfer (You Are Wanted, Resistance), Raúl Castillo (We The Animals, Vida), Nora Arnezeder (Maniac, Mozart in the Jungle) and Rich Cetrone (Batman […]
Director Zack Snyder’s new zombie action thriller for Netflix, Army Of The Dead, is officially set for a July shoot according to announcements from the streaming service as of Tuesday. The Dawn Of The Dead, Justice League, Watchmen and Man Of Steel helmer is also scripting with Joby Harold and Shay Hatten. Following a zombie outbreak in Las Vegas, a group of mercenaries take the ultimate gamble, venturing into the quarantine zone to pull off the greatest heist ever attempted. Casting is also complete with Ella Purnell (Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, Sweetbitter), Ana De La Reguera (Everything, Everything, Goliath), Theo Rossi (Luke Cage, Sons of Anarchy) and Huma Qureshi (Kaala, Viceroy’s House, Gangs of Wasseypur, Badlapur), all joining actor Dave Bautista who is starring as of April. Snyder is also producing with spouse and partner Deborah Snyder for The Stone Quarry with Wesley Coller. Bautista name will not […]
Borys Kit’s THR/Heat Vision exclusive announced on Tuesday that Zack Snyder is set to direct Army of the Dead for Netflix from a script by Joby Harold. Cameras are set to roll this summer with Snyder and wife and film partner Deborah Snyder producing via their Stone Quarry banner with Wesley Coller. The adventure is set amid a zombie outbreak in Las Vegas, during which a man assembles a group of mercenaries to take the ultimate gamble, venturing into the quarantined zone to pull off the greatest heist ever attempted. Army Of The Dead, originally brewed at Warner Bros. in 2007, reportedly reunites Snyder with Netflix’s Scott Stuber who gave the director his big break with his 2004 directorial debut, Dawn Of The Dead. The film is also being assembled with a budget close to $90 million and will essentially allow Snyder to stretch his creative muscles. “I thought this […]
Few films have the kind of rocky origin story that Justice League has had. Its predecessor, the “surefire hit” Batman v Superman, was savaged by critics and audiences alike. The harshest responses of all came from the fanboy community, who reacted as if Zach Snyder had broken into their houses and destroyed all their memorabilia in front of them. Warner Bros., a studio that has become the poster child for overreacting, proceeded to butcher Suicide Squad in hopes of making it more audience friendly (they failed) and started trying to micromanage JL. Things got worse last March when Snyder had to leave the project entirely due to the tragic suicide of his daughter – something that more than a few fanboys treated like poetic justice for making a comic book movie they didn’t like. Snyder’s replacement for the (extensive) reshoots and post-production couldn’t have been more different from him; Avengers […]
Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment have been hitting hard and heavy in the days leading up to this weekend’s New York Comic Con for Justice League. Hailing from director with extinuating work by Joss Whedon in recent months, time will tell if all those rumored reshoots made a difference when the film opens next month. In the meantime, it indeed took awhile for the trailers to really make it feel like this film was going somewhere. The last one was awesomely sold and the final trailer has now arrived with at least one key ingredient for fans long awaiting to see the remergence of DCEU franchise principal, Henry Cavill. Fueled by his restored faith in humanity and inspired by Superman’s selfless act, Bruce Wayne enlists the help of his newfound ally, Diana Prince, to face an even greater enemy. Together, Batman and Wonder Woman work quickly to find and recruit […]
The earlier trailers for Zack Snyder’s latest film, Justice League, haven’t been all approving despite attempts to keep the energy and excitement high (Godsmack’s “Come Together” was a nice added touch last time). Needless to say, just splashing our heroes onto the screen hasn’t really been enough for a lot of positive feedback to stick and this, coupled with Joss Whedon’s entry to help finish the film following Snyder’s own departure for personal matters have certainly added a pinch of uncertainty. Thus, this latest hat trick being from Warner Bros. Pictures for its DC Comics adapations is set for a November 17 release and amid all things Comic-Con this weekend, a fresh new trailer arrived online and right off the bat, you can instantly tell the change in tone and substance from before. We get glimpses of all our heroes opposite our current villain in Darkseid’s general, Steppenwolf, as he […]
Efforts to bring the DCU together at Warner Bros. Pictures remain on going with the development of several of its properties, a few of which are slowly but surely gaining traction; The latter being at least three of the now culminating cast for the first of two Justice League films currently on deck from the studio with a release date set for November 17. SYNOPSIS: In Justice League, fueled by his restored faith in humanity and inspired by Superman’s selfless act, Bruce Wayne enlists the help of his newfound ally, Diana Prince, to face an even greater enemy. Together, Batman and Wonder Woman work quickly to find and recruit a team of metahumans to stand against this newly awakened threat. But despite the formation of this unprecedented league of heroes—Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Cyborg and The Flash—it may already be too late to save the planet from an assault of […]
