Dai Sato, the man behind anime classics Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo is now shepherding efforts to bring Altered Carbon to the anime fray. As announced by Netflix in Singapore during a “What’s Next” event, Sato will be joined by Tsukasa Hondo in birthing the new series at animation studio, Anima, exploring new elements of the story mythology in the universe introduced currently in the live-action series.
The show, packed with sex, intrigue and tons of action and mystery, is based on the 2002 cyberpunk noir novel by Richard K. Morgan which precedes two more books in its construction. Joel Kinnanan stars at the center of the narrative led by series creator Laeta Kalogridis, telling of Takeshi Kovacs – an Envoy soldier killed years earlier and revived to solve an intriguing murder. In the course of this he’s forced to face his deadly past in a future in which “cortical stacks” can place the human mind in new bodies called sleeves.
If you enjoyed what Kalogridis brought to the table earlier this year with the sci-fi hit, chances are you’re curious as to what awaits its second season with Anthony Mackie set to star as of July. Whatever the case may be as of this point, fans of the show will likely have more than one way to enjoy the most out of the Altered Carbon universe as they like in the long haul.
