Edko Films is backing Cold War co-helmer Longman Leung’s new biopic, Anita, based on the life and times of the late Hong Kong film, television and music sensation Anita Mui, who sadly passed away in 2003. Hong Kong model Louise Wong stars in the title role for the film’s theatrical release later this year, with Sony reportedly acquiring the film for release in several Asian territories according to reports out of Screen.

This long-awaited biopic provides a vivid account of the remarkable life of Anita Mui in and behind the limelight, chronicling her journey from a child performer to becoming one of world’s most recognized music icons.

The cast also includes Louis Koo, Gordon Lam, Malaysian actress Fish Liew and emerging actor Terrance Lau, all playing major roles key to the story of Mui’s influential life amid career trajectory. Invariably, much of that influence still remains with Anita producer Bill Kong (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) who provided some of his own insight and shared experiences with the superstar at the time when she had a big movie in mind, and was even a starring hopeful Zhang Yimou’s House Of Flying Daggers. He spoke with SCMP’s Edmund Lee, who describes the film as “a lavish biopic”:

“Over the years, [I kept telling myself,] ‘I owe her a movie. I owe her a movie,’” says Kong. “Some people said to me, ‘Who would make a biopic so soon [after someone died]? Let’s wait for 50 years or so.’ But that’s not the type of film I want to make for Mui. She was a big inspiration for me; even up to this day, I’m still behaving as a person in the way she taught me.”
