Luke Sparke (Occupation, Occupation: Rainfall) will write and direct an adaptation of Ethan Pettus’ debut 2017 novel, “Primitive War: Opiate Undertow”. Sparke has since also secured the rights via his Sparke Films banner to the current three-part series which is comprised of 2020 follow-up, “Primitive War II: Animus Infernal” and the upcoming “Primitive War III: Aeon Ouroboros”. According to announcements this week, “Primitive War will explore the tragedies and atrocities of the Vietnam War and the horror of man meeting the ultimate Apex predators: dinosaurs.” Carly Imrie, Zachary Garred and Carmel Imrie will produce, reteaming from Occupation: Rainfall. Filmmaker Hanung Bramantyo is finally out and making headway having moved up with his latest and ambitious endeavor, Satria Dewa: Gatotkaca. The new superhero action adventure now due out in June has been years in the making with a proof of concept shelled out in 2019, and principal photography then following suit with a changing of hands. Billed to be the first in an eight-film line-up, Bramantyo directs the new action adventure from a script by Night Bus scribe Rahabi Mandra, based on a series of Indonesian comics from creator Rene Ishak, who also serves as exec producer with Celerina Judisari producing. Not all the titles Netflix premieres on its platform gets a fair promo or even a spot on the Coming Soon list, which is a shame. With that said, Ricky Ko’s dark comedy crime thriller, Time, and Chan Kin Long’s celebrated feature debut, Hand Rolled Cigarette, would fair nicely as discoveries for just about anyone stumbling upon them. Still, I guess I’m happy to stan these titles for a bit with a post here. Both have been on the streamer for a while already, so I at least hope folks out there are still catching on. Next in line for Deaf Crocodile’s 2022 wave of restored re-releases of classics will be the 4K premiere of Jean-Louis Roy’s Cannes pot-stirrer, The Unknown Man Of Shandigor. The company recently joined Cinémathèque suisse in fully restoring the 1967 cold war super-spy thriller, and is now poised to release the film in Swiss-French with English subtitles on VoD from March 1 in association with Grasshopper Films. The Unknown Man Of Shandigor is billed as “a marvelous and surreal hall of mirrors, part-Dr. Strangelove, part-Alphaville, with sly nods to British TV shows like ‘The Avengers’ and ‘Doctor Who’.” It centers on a mad herd of rival spies desperate to get their hands on what crazed scientist Herbert Von Krantz’s (famed Chilean cult actor Daniel Emilfork – The City Of Lost Children, The Devil’s Nightmare) latest invention: a device to “sterilize” all nuclear weapons. BLACK SITE: A Look At ‘Rage’ Director Johnny Balazs’s New Short Thriller

I don’t know about you, but it feels like it’s been forever since Johnny Balazs got to spread his wings a bit with some action and thrills since delivering winning hits like Dancer and Night Shift. It was terrific to see him expand though, bringing himself to feature fruition with an amazing cast for 2019 crime drama, Rage, bringing together Matt Theo, Hayley Beveridge and Richard Norton to star. Going forward though, it’ll be a pleasure to see what lies ahead with Balazs’s latest return to shortfilm territory, Black Site. Theo reunites with Balazs as the lead cast, starring alongside Amelie Mendoza, Cassie Bethdart, Zoran Bravo and Marcus Merkoski for the story of a team of soldiers sent into infiltrate an abandoned Cold War-era fortress to extract a cure for a viral disease. Following news broken earlier this month with Well Go USA Entertainment’s premium Asian film streamer, Hi-YAH! set to stream the hit South Korean sci-fi thriller, Spiritwalker, City On Fire‘s continued coverage notes the official US release date is finally set for April 12 on Blu-Ray and DVD from Well Go USA accordingly. That news now brings us overseas tor an official announcement as folks living in the UK can expect a release of their own beginning March 31 on Digital from Trinity CineAsia. SAVAGE ATTACK: Cameras Now Rolling As Action Thriller Adds Matthias Hues

Actor Matthias Hues (I Come In Peace) will rejoin Alexander Nevsky in front of the camera for the current Los Angeles production of Joe Cornet’s new film, Savage Attack. The two have previously worked on films such as crime thriller Black Rose, action adventure Maximum Impact, Showdown In Manila and Cornet’s upcoming Western, Assault On Rio Bravo, in which Nevsky also stars and will release later this year. Craig Hamann (Showdown In Manila) penned the script for the film which centers on a CIA operative who must save his former mentor from an insane asylum under siege by hired killers. Production hails from ETA Films and Nevsky’s Hollywood Storm banner, and is expected to take place in locations in California and Arizona. Nevsky is producing the film with Cornet, Eric Brenner (Crazy Heart) and Douglas “Fini” Finical exec producing.

Well Go USA’s TOO COOL TO KILL Clip And Trailer Tease Dramatic Hijinks

The publicity on this one’s been pretty low key but a new clip has arisen for Too Cool To Kill from Well Go USA Entertainment. The new period caper comedy is directed by Xing Wenxiong, and is open in theaters as of February 18. While pursuing his lifelong dream of landing a starring role, amateur actor Wei Chenggong (Wei Xiang) receives an invitation from famous actress Milan (Ma Li) to play her leading man, “Killer Karl.” However, unbeknownst to Mr. Wei, the new gig has landed him directly in the middle of a dangerous conspiracy. As the brutal truth inches closer and closer, he is left to rely on only his good luck and (somewhat questionable) acting skills to survive. Peep the trailer below as well as the official poster.

ONYEKA AND THE ACADEMY OF THE SUN Sets Adaptation At Netflix From Will Smith And David Oyewolo

Will Smith is getting a foot in the game with Netflix to bring to life an adaptation of Tọlá Okogwu’s upcoming novel, Onyeka and the Academy Of The Sun. The film will focus on a teenager who learns she has powers and travels to Nigeria to learn more about her origins, where she discovers a threat to her newfound magical community. Ola Shokunbi (Satellite, Indigo, upcoming A Yellow Heaven) is set to write the adaptation based on the novel which will publish this June in the U.S. and the U.K. from Simon & Schuster. Smith and Jon Mone will produce the film via Smith’s Westbrook Studios banner alongside David Oyelowo for Yoruba Saxon. Heather Washington of Westbrook Studios and Jessica Oyelowo of Yoruba Saxon will exec produce.

This one’s been making the rounds for a while now, but I’m apt to share these two stills below from Metamorphosis and The Chase helmer Kim Hong-sun’s sophomore return at the feature helm, Project: Wolf Hunting. Finecut’s been making the pitch to buyers at EFM this month following its launch at the Asian Contents & Film Market last Fall. 1630 miles from Manila to Busan. A cargo ship transporting the most vicious criminals. A floating hell with no escape. LOKI Adds ‘The Endless’ Directors To Shepherd Season Two

Disney+ hit series, Marvel Studios’ Loki, will get a second season, with Deadline‘s Justin Kroll reporting exclusively on the addition of directing duo Aaron Moorhead and Justin Benson (The Endless, Synchronic). The two will direct a majority of the six-episode second season from a script by Eric Martin, with series star Tom Hiddleston joined by Michael Waldron to executive produce season two. Thursday’s update marks a reunion for Benson and Moorhead who also directed several episodes for its upcoming Marvel Studios’ Moon Knight series starring Oscar Isaac and Ethan Hawke. Director Roel Reine’s latest return to martial arts and fantasy with Netflix’s Fistful Of Vengeance does a fine job of maintaining the same energy and flair of its preceding Wu Assassins series, and overall delivers largely on what fans can expect from a film headlined by Iko Uwais, an action star who broke ground more than ten years ago with some of the most elevated action cinema ever shot on camera. Reine continues a lot of that fanfare here, though lacking the same effect as its predecessors, but still bearing some fruit along the way. It’s a film that furthers along Uwais’ career into English-speaking territories for audiences as we approach his next appearance among the cadre of Hollywood action stars to be seen in the next Expendables film, and not for nothing either, but also a huge improvement in feature output for co-star Lewis Tan who reprises his role […]

GENTLEMAN: Contents Panda Snags New South Korean Thriller Starring Ju Ji-Hoon

Contents Panda is out and about these days selling its package to EFM buyers and the marketplace the world over as the latest look at crime thriller, Gentleman, makes the rounds, via Screendaily’s Jean Noh. Actor Ju Ji-hoon (Dark Figure Of Crime) stars in the South Korean pic from The Artist: Reborn helmer Kim Kyoung-won, and centers on “the head of a private detective agency, suspected of a kidnapping who teams up with a prosecutor to find the real culprit and uncover a larger conspiracy.” Gentleman marks the first original feature from local OTT streaming service, wavve, where the film will share its rollout alongside theatrical screenings. The film also stars Park Sung-woong (Start-Up) and Choi Sung-eun (Okay Madam).

PEACEMAKER To Thrill Audiences For Another Season On HBO Max

Every week for the last eight weeks has been a damn good week if you’re subbed to HBO Max or wherever you can legitimately catch the 80s rock-supercharged hit series, Peacemaker. On Wednesday, Warnermedia announced a second season for the show is officially in development following its premiere last month as a spin-off of James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad. The news comes on the eve of Thursday’s season one finale premiere on February 17. Birthed on comic pages initally back in 1966 before eventually landing under DC Comics, Gunn brought the character to life between both properties, following through with the hit HBO Max series with John Cena in the title role. Actor Frank Grillo is on the docket for several titles going forward, including a hopeful fourth chapter of the Skyline saga for which updates still remain pending. In the meantime, we can report via the trades as of Wednesday that Grillo will lead Kevin Grevioux’s King Of Killers, joining Jiu Jitsu star Alain Moussi who was firstly attached to the pic in news out of EFM last year. The news comes as Redbox Entertainment and Red Sea Media, Inc. (“RSM”) have signed worldwide rights for the pic. Focus Features and Working Title have announced the wrap of production in London earlier this week for writer/director Nida Manzoor’s new action comedy, (Peacock series “We Are Lady Parts”) feature debut, Polite Society.
