HBO Max is readying yet another addition to the collection of spin-off shows in the Batman franchise. It doesn’t have a title yet, but Friday’s announcement from the streamer describes it as “an original DC drama set in the Gotham City police department”, set in the same universe as the upcoming film, The Batman, from director Matt Reeves. The groundbreaking television series to be written by Winter is set in the world Reeves is creating for The Batman feature film and will build upon the motion picture’s examination of the anatomy of corruption in Gotham City, ultimately launching a new Batman universe across multiple platforms. The series provides an unprecedented opportunity to extend the world established in the movie and further explore the myriad of compelling and complex characters of Gotham. Director Hong Won-chan (The Yellow Sea, The Chaser) is back, and at best I would love nothing more than for my own instincts to suggest that his latest, Deliver Us From Evil, will hit the festival ground running soon. Actor Hwang Jung-min (Veteran, The Battleship Island) is back as well, and here, he plays a contract killer who, following his final assignment, arrives in Thailand to investigate a kidnapping. A deadly game of cat and mouse ensues when he’s targeted by the sibling of his last assignment, played by the fantastic Lee Jung-jae (Along With The Gods franchise, Assassination). The first wave is already online for the upcoming 24th installment of the Fantasia International Film Festival, and it’s packed with some delicious gems. I have to say though, I’m even more pulled in by the second wave that was announced on Thursday. It’s especially a big deal for director Yuji Shimomura, long since befriending self-proclaimed “graphic novel” actor Tak Sakaguchi, and growing a combined resume of credits that would go on to influence a generation of DVD hoarders and Asian cinema enthusiasts alike. Their latest film, Crazy Samurai Musashi, which is headed for Japanese theaters in August, is also making it’s North American premiere next to a raft of stand-out titles. Creator Eric Kripke’s 2019 live-action serial comic adaptation, The Boys, was a superb hit in many of its parts, drawing together an interwoven tale of ragtag outlaws out to uncover the dark side of superheroism in all its corporatized glory and idolatry. Even moreso was the culminating arc centered primarily on the role of ex-cop Billy Butcher, played ferociously by actor Karl Urban, entrenched in a mission of vengeance exacerbated further by the mystique surrounding the presumed death of his wife at the hands of world-famous ‘supe’, Homelander, played aptly by Antony Starr. The show’s first season is avaialble on Amazon Prime, and so with a September launch date in the works, you’ll have plenty of time to catch up if you’ve missed it. It’s been about a year and a half since any talk arose over Upgrade director Leigh Whannell’s attachment to pen a reboot for Escape From New York. The famed sci-fi director favorite also just scored an opportunity with Blumhouse TV and UCP for the development of a sequel series based on the aforementioned Logan Marshall-Green starrer as of May. Time will tell what happens with either of these projects, as Whannell basks in the success of his recent sci-fi horror, The Invisible Man, from Universal Pictures. For now, the time going forward may also invite further progress on The Wolfman for the same studio. OKAY MADAM: All Aboard The Unfriendly Skies In Lee Chul-Ha’s New Action Adventure Comedy

If you’re pining for another dose of female-fronted action and comedy of the Korean variety, then you’re to appreciate the fan service here based on the title alone, with Lee Chul-ha’s new film, Okay Madam. Lee directs from a script by Shin Hyun-sung, which centers on a middle-aged suburban couple, winners of a trip to Hawaii, who soon find themselves going toe-to-toe with hijackers aboard their flight. An August release is in tow from Megabox Plus M, with a cast that lists Uhm Jung-hwa and Park Sung-woong, with Lee Sang-yoon, Bae Jeong-nam and actress Lee Sun-bin. A pair of trailers have been released in the past few weeks since, with the second arriving today. Check both out below, along with the poster art.

Donnie Yen Awakens SLEEPING DOGS, Advances GOLDEN EMPIRE With ‘Crazy Rich Asians’ Producer

The trades confirmed two new projects on the way for actor Donnie Yen, on Tuesday. The first will be Sleeping Dogs, an adaptation of the Square Enix game which launched in 2012, followed by a remastered version in 2014. Yen, who teased the project on Instagram this week, will star as Wei Shan, an undercover cop transferred to Hong Kong to infiltrate the Triads. Neal Moritz (Fast and Furious franchise) is still attached to produce the pic alongside DJ2 Entertainment. Director and cast additions remain pending. One report, an exclusive from Deadline’s Andreas Wiseman and Tom Grater, also announced Golden Empire, which sees Yen as “a notorious drug kingpin who hits the top of the most wanted list for both the U.S. and Mexican governments”. They don’t all sit well with every audience, but there’s no question that some of them definitely deliver, and Matt Merritte is currently poised to deliver his own with freshman feature, The Rage Peaks At Night. The independently-produced thriller hails from Merritte’s Keep Forward Productions, and centers on Julia (Lauren Biazzo), a woman searching for her brother with the help of an ex-Triad, whilst being pursued by her former occult crime family, The Apostles, led by Judas (Tom Caserto). Japan Cuts is getting down to business this month as it ramps up a virtual medium for this year’s 14th film festival installment. The full line-up is available with tickets through the official website following their announcement in late May for Shinichiro Ueda’s Special Actors to serve as festival opener. Spearheaded by K. F. Watanabe, Amber Noé, and Joel Neville Anderson, Japan Society is partnering with Festival Scope and Shift72 for the festival’s virtual VOD format for audiences around the country, including and beyond New York City, stamping a two-week run set for July 17 through July 30. A raft of thirty feature films and shorts will stream, all geoblocked for their U.S. North American screenings. The trades on Monday confirmed Oscar-winning Once Upon A Time In Hollywood actor Brad Pitt’s latest attachment to star in Bullet Train, an adaptation of a Japanese novel, to be directed by Fast And Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw director David Leitch. Based on the popular Japanese book Maria Beetle by Kotaro Isaka, the story follows five assassins who find themselves on a fast moving bullet train from Tokyo to Morioka with only a few stops in between. Strangely, they discover their missions are not unrelated to each other. Per THR and Deadline, Leitch is also on script supervision detail with Fear Street writer Zak Olkewicz putting pen to paper. Dwight H. Little’s 1988 action comedy adventure, Bloodstone, stands amply among any cadre of 80s action titles you can put together. Aside from it’s campy and cheesy allure, it’s precisely the kind you would expect from the Cannon era – this one being from Omega Entertainment and hailing as an Indian-American production. To boot, it marks the only production of its kind for Indian actor Rajinikanth, who was already twelve years into his craft, and having learned several languages. For this, language barriers fall short for his role in Blood Stone, coupled with leading duo Brett Stimely and Anna Nichols, and a line-up of oddball characters fresh from a Golan-Globus vehicle. Yang Woo-seok’s Steel Rain is currently on Netflix for anyone new to his 2017 live-action adaptation of the eponynous 2011 web comic. It comes recommended as the July 29 release date approaches for Lotte Entertainment’s upcoming sequel, Steel Rain 2: Summit, which rejoins Jung Woo-sung and Kwak Do-won for a new story that flips the script with a certain intrigue. Per my previous overview, the sequel sees both actors in their respective characters – one promoted from the first film as South Korea’s president, and a North Korean official.
