Working with actor and filmmaker Bryan Larkin to promote his latest shortfilm sequel, Dead End 2: A Justified Kill, I’ve finally managed to get some dialogue going with actor Julian Gaertner, the second half of Larkin’s explosive hitman shortfilm saga now currently running in festivals. I can only imagine what would entail if he and I could sit face-to-face given the man speaks several languages, and I know quite a few folks who would be enamored by this as well. That, and speaking about Hong Kong, working with Larkin, the process of independent filmmaking and the enrichening factors of art and culture and how they coalesce – that Gaetner is a biproduct of that sort of cultivation is something I find very intriguing, and I reckon as much you won’t find that everywhere. With a director as able as Yu Irie to deliver an intriguing and suspenseful thriller as he’s done in films like Joker Game and his recent Confession Of Murder remake, his latest, A.I. Collapse looks to continue the trend here. He directs a cast led by Takao Osawa who plays a medical scientist whose latest life-saving A.I. system goes autonomous and begins plotting to taking out humans it deems unfit to live, and it does so in numbers. That’s an intense setup if ever, and audiences in Japan will have their chance to watch it all unfold on January 31, 2020. Also starring are Kento Kaku, Alice Hirose and Takanori Iwata.

Yuji Shimomura-directed thriller, Re:Born, has been the talk of many a fan for the longest time now, but the word is now that the film will stream on horror platform, Shudder, beginning November 7. Shimomura’s sophomore debut reunites the stunt performer, action director and coordinator with cult action star Tak Sakaguchi as both paved the way with many notable directors in the last twenty years for Japanese cult action cinema. Sakaguchi stars as Toshiro, an idyllic countryside store clerk whose past life as a clandestined special forces operative comes back to haunt him and the young girl in his care. What ensues is a rampaging tale of action-packed close quarters retribution with Toshiro laying waste as a one-man army against his old commander and his gorilla kill-squad. Friday saw the official trailer release of Jeff Chan’s new sci-fi, Code 8. The film is based on his own hit proof of concept short which followed up with feature film prospects funded by fans via Indiegogo. Robbie Amell stars along with Greg Bryk, Kari Matchett, Sung Kang, Alex Mallari Jr., Peter Outerbridge, and Shaun Benson. The film just premiered at Sitges and will release in select theaters and on-demand on December 13 from Vertical Entertainment. Set in a world where 4% of the population is born with varying supernatural abilities, but instead of being billionaires or superheroes, they face discrimination and live in poverty, often resorting to crime. BROOKLYN HORROR FILM FESTIVAL IV Closes With A Bang, Winners Announced!

The fourth-annual Brooklyn Horror Film Festival closed out its events with a sold-out screening of Joe Begos’ VFW at Nitehawk Cinema Prospect Park this month. The film is one of 100 films and events hosted across Brooklyn with other active venues like Cobble Hill Cinema, IFP Made in NY Media Center and Long Island University’s Kumble Theater. The annual New York City festival was launched in partnership with ALTER, Blood Manor, IFC Midnight, Spamflix and VFW producer and horror magazine Fangoria who also shepherded the closing night events. The festival was recognized by Vulture as after reportedly welcoming more festival attendees, film guests and putting on more events than ever before. With a version that would have seen Sandra Bullock starring now no more and Miramax poised for its own Cash Truck remake reuniting director/actor duo Guy Ritchie and Jason Statham, Deadline now brings word that actor Holt McCallany is joining in on the fun. A remake of the 2004 French crime thriller, Le Convoyeur, Statham in the role of H, described as “a cold and mysterious character” tasked with moving hundreds of millions of dollars every week. UPDATED October 28, 2019 at 7:04pm EST News is currently circulating about the death of stunt performer and martial artist Hans Wikkeling II as of Tuesday. An update from a family member on Friday confirmed the cause of death was drowning. “Hans passed doing what he loved to do, swimming in the ocean and on October 17th his body was found on the beach in Davenport, CA.” said Ahjahlia Hall in Facebook post. “It was deemed that his death was due to drowning.” Folks were alerted of Wikkeling II’s mysterious disappearance on September 24 upon which friends filed a missing persons report prior to an October 11 update revealing a description of his 2005 Hyundai Accent GL in hopes of learning of his whereabouts. BETTER DAYS: Derek Tsang’s Touching New Drama Will Open In North America On November 8

Derek Tsang’ riveting new drama, Better Days, will finally have its U.S. theatrical bow on November 8 from Well Go USA. The move is the latest milestone for the film which befell China censorship over the summer among other titles this year. Since its June 27 release lapse, Better Days opened in China instead on October 25 starring Zhou Dongyu and Jackson Yee in an emotionally captivating, picaresque tale of social and urban strife, and love between a bullied, abused school girl struggling to prep for final exams, and the small-time criminal who sets out to protect her. The China cut severed five minutes from its runtime following its June release cancellation due to reticence from China’s education authorities. The Next PURGE Film Casts Its Lead

Major details are unknown for what lies ahead for the upcoming fifth installment of The Purge franchise. Nonetheless and to the delight of fans who’ve followed along since 2014, a new film will be arriving next year and it’s new lead has been found as of this week in actress Ana de la Reguera (upcoming Netflix release, Army Of The Dead). According to Borys Kit at THR, the film shoots next month with Everardo Gout (Nat Geo’s Mars, Marvel’s Luke Cage) taking the franchise out of its metropolitan setting. He will direct from a script by James DeMonaco who penned and directed the first three films, all which have grossed more than $450 million dollars, and also helped shepherd the films’ two-season succession on USA Network. The film opens on July 21, 2020 from Blumhouse, Platinum Dunes and Universal Pictures.

BLOODY MARIE: Don’t Miss The Official U.S. Trailer For The New Dutch Thriller

Directing duo Lennert Hillege and Guido van Driel had their day earlier this year with the release of their acclaimed Dutch action-drama Bloody Marie. German actress Susanne Wolff stars in the title role as a once successful graphic novelist who now thrives on alcohol living in Amsterdam’s red-light district, getting into one conflict after another. When a horrific incident in the house next door occurs, she is forced to take action and get her life back on track. Bloody Marie has since screen in Rotterdam for the festival crowed and was also shortlisted as one of the nine films in contention to be the Dutch entry for the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film at the 92nd Academy Awards. Uncork’d Entertainment has since acquired the new thriller which hits select theaters November 1 before releasing on-demand November 11.

Folks are just a few weeks away from the U.S. premiere of Pema Dhondup’s new action drama, The Man From Kathmandu at the seventh Urban Action Showcase in New York City. The film opened overseas in Nepal earlier this year prior to featival screenings in Puerto Rico and Barcelona with an upward mixture of reviews and we now get a little more of its profusion with new poster art now making the rounds. Makoto Shinkai’s newest anime, Weathering With You, previously opened in Japan cinemas on July 19 from Toho. The film scored well over $125 million dollars upon its local release and now stands as Japan’s official submission for the Academy Award for Best International Film at the 92nd Academy Awards. The film is currently making the rounds at festivals as did in Toronto and in Los Angeles, and will also screen for audiences at this year’s 32nd Tokyo International Film Festival on October 31.
