Marvel aims to keep fans on their toes this week with a volley of casting news for two distinct projects. Deadline reports that actress Gemma Chan (upcoming Crazy Rich Asians) is staking her claim as Kree geneticist and spy Minn-Erva in the Anna Boden/Ryan Fleck-directed adaptation of Captain Marvel starring Brie Larson for the 90s-set origin tale of an air force pilot whose DNA fuses with alien tech following a near-fatal explosion. Ray Bradbury’s 1953 novel, Fahrenheit 451, has long been a source of inspiration for many creatives in T.V., film and literature. 99 Homes helmer Ramin Bahrani is joining the lot these days for his own fray into thought-provoking sci-fi dystopia and with a release later this year slated foe HBO, the film now has its newest teaser circulating. Starring Michael B. Jordan and Michael Shannon, Fahrenheit 451 is based on Ray Bradbury’s classic novel. In a future where the media is an opiate, history is rewritten and “firemen” burn books, Jordan plays Montag, a young fireman who struggles with his role as law enforcer. Battling his mentor, fire captain Beatty, played by Shannon, he forsakes his world in an effort to regain his humanity. Also starring are Sofia Boutella and Lilly Singh with Laura Harrier, Keir Dullea, Martin Donovan, Grace Lynn Kung, and Jane Moffatt. Catch the trailer!

Review: Dante Lam’s OPERATION RED SEA Never Runs Dry

Action auteur Dante Lam’s latest offering, Operation Red Sea, runs high on military might for its +2 hour runtime. Most of the film relies heavily on the orchestra of all things that go boom but lends the few obligatory small doses of poignance and drama to enduce empathy among its key characters for a film with such a large cast. Actor Zhang Yi plays Yang Rui who leads the Chinese Navy’s eight-member Jiaolong Assault Unit for the film’s narrative loosely based on the 2015 uprising in Yemen. Certain areas of the story are reworked with the crux of our story set in the nation of Yewaire and behind enemy lines where for Rui and his unit, a rescue mission now comes abruptly packaged with foiling an even deadlier terroristic threat. The first teaser for The Trigonal has arrived over the weekend ahead of its May 2 release with a cast that enlists Ian Taylor Ignacio, Sarah Chang and Rhian Ramos. An underground fighting circuit run by an international crime syndicate invades a retired martial arts champion’s small idyllic town. When syndicate thugs brutally assault his wife and murder his best friend, he is left with no other choice but to fight for justice. Production is currently underway in Toronto for the new action thriller, Polar following its announcement late last year. Swedish helmer Jonas Åkerlund is directing with a script by Jayson Rothwell that sees actor Mads Mikkelsen leading a cast now confirmed by an exclusive at Deadline that also lists Vanessa Hudgens (High School Musical franchise), Kathryn Winnick (Vikings series) and Matt Lucas (Alice In Wonderland). Based on the 2013 Dark Horse publication from creator Victor Santos, Mikkelsen stars as the world’s top assassin, Duncan Vizla (a.k.a. The Black Kaizer). It’s often interesting in wondering how a director can conjure a mystery tale that keeps audiences guessing. Jang Chang-Won’s new film, The Swindlers, certainly lives up to the task with as much intricacy and detail as possible in its two hour duration. Written by Jang for his own debut, the film sets its course with tragedy in its wake when a church learns it was swindled out of billions by Doo-Chil (Heo Sung-Tae), a schemer who fakes his own death while escaping from Korea. Eight years later, we meet Ji-Sung (Hyun Bin), a vengeful con-artist hunting Doo-Chil and eager to hatch a plan of his own until he’s forced to pair up with Hee-Soo (Yoo Ji-Tae), an ambitious prosecutor to help culminate more than enough evidence to catch the big fish. Several reviews are already online following actor Idris Elba’s Sundance debut, Yardie, and his freshman effort at the helm has been a bit worse for wear. Some higher points note solid performances from the cast and Elba’s notable grasp of filmmaking among others but time will tell if future reviews and opinions will foresee a change in direction. Beyond that, the film is getting a European release later this year from StudioCanalUK based on Victor Headley’s 1992 novel and for this, we finally have an official trailer making arounds. More footage is finally rolling out in the tiniest bits from his latest, Kubo Tite’s BLEACH, hailing from director Sato Shinsuke of GANTZ and Library Wars fame and for that, we get a thirty-second glimpse of what last year’s twenty-second teaser was all about.
