A town plagued by scum of the underworld; an ugly, unsettling vengeance, through bullets and blood, aims to cleanse it all. This one’s a different change of pace, and a challenging venture to see if indie director Joey Min’s action directing chops can fit the mold in a vertical framework. It’s the latest from his banner at Art School Dropouts and it’s called Gunslinger Mary, with @ajkick101 herself Angela Jordan, and performances by Min along with Victor Chong, Andy To, and Hector Soria, coupled with an extra serving of Frank Miller fandom for the graphic novel-style noir appeal. If there’s one film of late that captures so much of what ails the American landscape, so far its looking like Jeremy Saulnier’s new thriller, Rebel Ridge. Netflix revealed the poster just ahead of Wednesday’s trailer which rightly hits the pavement with as much intensity and momentum as you might expect from the man behind thrillers like Blue Ruin and Green Room. A former Marine grapples his way through a web of small-town corruption when an attempt to post bail for his cousin escalates into a violent standoff with the local police chief. He didn’t start this fight, but he will finish it. Aaron Pierre, Don Johnson, and AnnaSophia Robb star in the pic which launches on the streamer beginning September 6. Catch the trailer:

Last we learned the 28th Fantasia International Film Festival announced its jury awards and you can read about those announcements here. Josh Duhamel (Shotgun Wedding) and Lukas Gage (Road House) have signed on to star in Full Throttle Mindset, a darkly comedic crime thriller from director Patrick Brice (Creep) and XYZ Films. Based on an article in the St. Louis Riverfront Times by journalist Doyle Murphy, the film tells the wild true story of young burnout Blake Laubinger (Gage), who’s taken under the wing of a Midwestern tanning salon mogul named Todd Beckman (Duhamel). He soon learns his new mentor’s businesses are a front for a drug empire — one he’s now expected to partake in. The first official trailer has arrived for True Identity, the latest from Hard Days director Michihito Fujii, who most of us know has been busy knocking out his next venture for Netflix with Last Samurai Standing. Seperately and for now, we have the first official teaser and promo bits for the upcoming suspense thriller which goes before audiences in Japan from Shochiku on November 29. True Identity features Usogui, The Village and One Last Bloom star Ryusei Yokohama from a script by Fujii and co-writer Kazuhisa Kodera, based on Tamehito Somei’s 2020 novel. As Deadline’s Nellie Andreeva reports, the new show hails from Robert Levine (The Old Man), with Stahelski set to direct the pilot. ACMA:GAME: THE FINAL KEY First Teaser Revealed For Toya Sato’s Feature Film Expansion

Riding all the way to a feature finale is the Acma:Game franchise based on the 2013 Kodansha novel publication. Thus, we get Acma:Game: The Final Key, directed by Toya Sato who also co-helmed the ten-part Nippon TV drama which is currently streaming on Amazon Prime. Plot details for the film are unknown but the incumbent movie features actor Shotaro Mamiya who reprises his role from the current drama series; The initial story for the drama centers on Teruasa Oda, the son of a powerful family who journeys in search of the mystery behind a legend pertaining to 99 keys that could grant their collective owner ultimate power. Also starring are Juri Tanaka, Kotone Furukawa, Ryo Ryusei, Lina Arashi, Yukiyoshi Ozawa, and more. The cast are further joined by series scribes Izumi Yoshihiro, and Taniguchi Junichiro, with a release set for October 25 from Toho.

Fantasia XXVIII Review: In THE TENANTS, There’s No Scarier Place Like Home

3 min. read Yoon Eun-kyoung’s The Tenants wasn’t in my curtain raiser for this year’s Fantasia Festival. The programming notes were certainly enough to garner my interest given the nod to the stylings of Bong Joon-ho via hit drama, Parasite in all its glory, so I had to check it out. The film is shot entirely black and white which is a challenge for me whenever it comes to the lighting in certain scenes. It’s also an issue when coupled with the pacing at times as the story moves very slow for most of the way and doesn’t really pick up until well into the first hour as the characters really begin developing.
